Laughing Gas [4 marks]

The laughing gas, N2O reacts readily with oxygen gas to produce brown coloured
NO2 gas. The reaction is given by the following equation.

2N2O(g) + 3O2(g) → 4NO2(g)

In an experiment 30 g of N2O is reacted with 30 g of O2 gas. M(N2O) = 44.02 g mol-1,

M(NO2) = 46.01 g mol-1.

i. (1 mark) Determine which is the limiting reagent in this experiment. Show

your working.

ii. (2 marks) Calculate the mass of NO2 produced. Show your working.

iii. (1 mark) It is found that this experiment produced 52.8 g of NO2. Calculate the
percentage yield of NO2. Show your working.

Metals [3 marks]

(3 marks) A 2.60 g sample of a metal, initially at 21.0 oC, gained 6.92 J of energy.
The final temperature of the metal sample is 28.0 oC. Calculate the specific heat
capacity of the metal in J g-1 K-1. Show your working.

Solubility [3 marks]

i. (1 mark) The dissolving process of barium fluoride, BaF2 (s), can be

represented by:

BaF2 (s) ⇌ Ba2+ (aq) + 2F- (aq)

Write the solubility constant expression Ksp for a saturated solution of BaF2.

ii. (2 marks) Consider the reaction:

CaBr2 (aq) + Na2SO4 (aq) → CaSO4 (s) + 2 NaBr (aq)

a. (1 mark) Write the net ionic equation for the above reaction.

b. (1 mark) Identify spectator ions.

1. A reaction that gives major and minor products.
2. A reaction that uses NaBH4 as the reagent.
3. A substitution reaction.
4. A reaction that uses 3-methylbutan-2-ol as either a reactant or product.
