DEFINITION OF TERMS

1.THERMAL ENERGY-Thermal energy is the internal energy of an object due

to the kinetic energy of its atoms and/or molecules. 2.HEAT-A form of energy associated with the motion of atoms or molecules and capable of being transmitted through solid and fluid media by conduction, through fluid media by convection, and through empty space by radiation. 3.TEMPERATURE-is a physical property of matter that quantitatively expresses the common notions of hot and cold. Objects of low temperature are cold, while various degrees of higher temperatures are referred to as warm or hot. 4.HEAT TRANSFER-The movement of heat from one body to another (gas, liquid, solid, or combinations thereof) by means of radiation, convection, or conduction.
THREE KINDS OF HEAT TRANSFER

-Conduction- the transfer of heat from matter to matter -Convection- the transfer of heat from matter to air -Radiation- the transfer of heat from one point to another, such as boiling water. 5.THERMAL EXPANSION-is the tendency of matter to change in volume in response to a change in temperature. 6.CHANGES IN STATES OF MATTER-Condensation and Evaporation Take a walk with your child and find examples of condensation and evaporation. For example, you might find condensation form on the windows of cars or homes. You might find clothes drying on a clothesline. You might see a fountain spewing water into the air. Have your child take pictures or draw pictures of examples and write a brief description in order to create a reference book.

7.CALORIMETRY-Measurement of the amount of heat evolved or absorbed in a chemical reaction, change of state, or formation of a solution. 8.LAWS OF GASES-A series of laws in physics that predict the behavior of an ideal gas by describing the relations between the temperature, volume, and pressure. The laws include Boyle's law, Charles' law, and the pressure law, and are combined in the ideal gas law. 9.LAWS OF THERMODYNAMICS-The three laws were put in a memorable form by the English scientist and novelist C. P. Snow: (i) you cannot win (matter and energy are conserved); (ii) you cannot break even (cannot return to the same entropy state, since disorder always increases); (iii) you cannot get out of the game (absolute zero is unobtainable).
10.ZEROTH LAW-is a generalization principle of thermal equilibrium among bodies,

or thermodynamic systems, in contact. The zeroth law states that if two systems are in thermal equilibrium with a third system, they are also in thermal equilibrium with each other.
