While Mr. Gradgrind insists that his children should always stick to the facts,
Hard Times not only suggests that fancy is as important as fact, but it
continually calls into Question the difference between fact and fancy. Dickens
suggests that what Constitutes so-called fact is a matter of perspective or
opinion. For example, Bounderby believes that factory employees are lazy
good-for-nothings who expect to Be fed “from a golden spoon.” The Hands, in
contrast, see themselves as hardworking And as unfairly exploited by their
employers. These sets of facts cannot be reconciled because they depend upon
perspective. While Bounderby declares that “*w+hat is Called Taste is only
another name for Fact,” Dickens implies that fact is a question of Taste or
personal belief. As a novelist, Dickens is naturally interested in illustrating
that Fiction cannot be excluded from a fact-filled, mechanical society.
Gradgrind’s children, However, grow up in an environment where all flights
of fancy are discouraged, and They end up with serious social dysfunctions as
a result. Tom becomes a hedonist who Has little regard for others, while
Louisa remains unable to connect with others even Though she has the desire
to do so. On the other hand, Sissy, who grew up with the Circus, constantly
indulges in the fancy forbidden to the Gradgrinds, and lovingly raises Louisa
and Tom’s sister in a way more complete than the upbringing of either of the
Older siblings. Just as fiction cannot be excluded from fact, fact is also
necessary for a Balanced life. If Gradgrind had not adopted her, Sissy would
have no guidance, and her Future might be precarious. As a result, the
youngest Gradgrind daughter, raised both By the factual Gradgrind and the
fanciful Sissy, represents the best of both worlds.

Industrialization
Hand in hand with the glorification of data and numbers and facts in the
schoolhouse is the treatment of the workers in the factories of Coketown as
nothing more than machines, which produce so much per day and are not
thought of as having feelings or families or dreams. Dickens depicts this
situation as a result of the industrialization of England; now that towns like
Coketown are focused on producing more and more, more dirty factories are
built, more smoke pollutes the air and water, and the factory owners only see
their workers as part of the machines that bring them profit. In fact, the
workers are only called “Hands”, an indication of how objectified they are by
the owners. Similarly, Mr. Gradgrind’s children were brought up to be
“minds”. None of them are people or "Hearts".As the book progresses, it
portrays how industrialism creates conditions in which owners treat workers
as machines and workers respond by unionizing to resist and fight back
against the owners. In the meantime, those in Parliament (like Mr. Gradgrind,
who winds up elected to office) work for the benefit of the country but not its
people. In short, industrialization creates an environment in which people
cease to treat either others or themselves as people. Even the unions, the
groups of factory workers who fight against the injustices of the factory
owners, are not shown in a good light. Stephen Blackpool, a poor worker at
Bounderby’s factory, is rejected by his fellow workers for his refusal to join
the union because of a promise made to the sweet, good woman he loves,
Rachael. His factory union then treats him as an outcast. The remedy to
industrialism and its evils in the novel is found in Sissy Jupe, the little girl who
was brought up among circus performers and fairy tales. Letting loose the
imagination of children lets loose their hearts as well, and, as Sissy does, they
can combat and undo what a Gradgrind education produces.

Childhood
Dickens was individually aware of the exploitation to which the children were
subjected because of his own history at workhouse. His work house experience
parallels Oliver’s work house experience. Children were exploited and forced
to work under harsh circumstances. The Victorian society, mainly the middle
class, believed in strong moral values and morals. However, they did not do
anything on larger scale to help them or change their condition. Children
were susceptible to mistreatment. Dickens successfully portrayed the cruelty
of children in the nineteenth century Britain. He evoked readers’ sympathy to
the terrible conditions of children. Economic development was led by the
Industrial Revolution which began in the middle of the eighteenth century,
but it became the cause of many social problems. One of the major problems
was an increase in child labour. Financial condition of working class people
was miserable to an extent that the whole family, even women and children,
had to work to add family’s income. Families thought that if they had more
children, there would be more hands to work. Child labour became a part of
industrialization and various laws were introduced to prohibit it. However,
child labour existed even before the Industrial Revolution had started. With
the advent of the Industrial Revolution, the working class children helped
their parents in household chores and farming. They helped in different kinds
of work as stated, “when in the late eighteenth century, industrialization
began to shift the location of the textile industries from home to factory; it was
natural to look for children as a key component of the workforce.”Instead of
labouring in fields or at homes, children preferred working in factories and
mines because they were better paid in factories or mines. Many children
started working at the very young age because their families relied on their
income. They had to work for long hours to earn money. As Cunningham
wrote, “children often started to work under the age of ten, and the Industrial
Revolution period began to regain the reputation it had until recent years as a
black moment in the history of childhood.

Education
There is a strong case made in Hard Times that education is not simply the
classroom experience of memorizing facts. The novel expresses the view that
having an emotional component to our education is crucial. It’s also shown in
the novel that this kind of learning can happen at any time in life. Learning
about the way other people live is the groundwork for valuing them as fellow
creatures; learning about them only in terms of their productivity is a recipe
for class warfare. If this proper groundwork is not laid, then a perverted kind
of learning can take its place, full of cynicism and misanthropy. At the time of
writing the novel Hard Times, Dickens was extremely dissatisfied with the
education system in place in Victorian England. He believed that education
was a big part of a person’s life and contributed to their outcome as human
being in society. The education at the time severely emphasized utilitarianism.
Utilitarianism is when actions are considered good and right if they benefit a
majority. The concept of utilitarianism, eliminates the need for individuality
and creates anonymity. Throughout his novel Hard Times, Charles Dickens
shows the inadequacy of an approach to education, as well as life, that only
pays attention to facts and ignores the importance of the imagination and the
human heart. The school Dickens uses in the novel to satirically attack the
type of education he despises so much is run by Mr. Thomas Gradgrind.

Love
In Hard Times, love itself can be a positive or negative emotion, regardless of
whether it occurs between romantic partners or parents and children. There
are examples of socially sanctioned and nurturing domestic love. There’s also
spiritually uplifting love that inspires better behavior and the improvement of
the self. And finally there’s disturbed love that overreaches the normal
boundaries of the relationship. The Gradgrinds’ parental love rests upon such
a flawed Fact-only method of thinking and reasoning, the system which
Dickens ironically portrays as the typical love that children should receive.
Consequently, this “flawed mold” system eventually contorts Louisa’s
emotional development, causing her to reach adulthood while remaining
totally senseless and unaware of love. The deprivation and misdirection of
love in Louisa’s childhood corrupt her transition into adolescence with a
severe lack of emotion and inability to understand parental love itself. The
consequences of Louisa’s deprivation of parental love are manifested in her
imprudent marriage with Bounderby. Louisa’s impulsive decision to marry
Bounderby, ironically, stems from the ill advice of her brother Tom, who is
emotionally bereft due to also being raised in the same manner as she was.
Furthermore, their father, Mr. Gradgrind, who so sternly believes in the
triumph of Facts over emotions, forgets marriage also needs to be based on
emotion and love; he happily facilitates Louisa’s marriage to Bounderby, even
though she knows she does not love him.

Divorce
Hard Times deals with divorce in an interesting way in relation to its time
period. Victorian marriage laws made divorce next to impossible, as it
required an act of Parliament, something extraordinarily expensive to achieve
Dickens, on the contrary, does invoke sympathy for those stuck in unfair
marriages in Hard Times. For a poor working man like Stephen Blackpool,
divorce was an actual impossibility. He could not escape the immoral,
alcoholic wife he so hated. Although Dickens sets up Stephen and Rachael in a
beautiful, loving and trusting relationship with each other, prompting hopes
for the reader that the two may find a way to be happy at last, he knows that
their union is impossible. Either Stephen or his wife would have to die in
order for their marriage to be dissolved. Interestingly enough, Dickens does
not kill off Blackpool’s wife as would be expected for good feelings all around,
but rather Stephen Blackpool himself. Dickens thus creates a pathos for
Stephen that urges the reader to pity a man unfortunate enough to end up in
such a bad marriage. He does not give the desired happy ending, going so far
as to let Rachael live out the rest of her days caring for Stephen’s terrible
widow. In contrast, Mr. Bounderby and Louisa’s separation leaves divorce
unclear. He simply sends her packing and resumes his bachelor life.
Bounderby dies a few years later, and Louisa grows up to never have children,
which leads the reader to believe she was unable to marry again. If
Bounderby dies, however, shouldn’t Louisa be able to get remarried? Dickens
leaves this matter unclear, though it could be assumed that Bounderby has
enough money to pay for a divorce. The harsh treatment of Stephen by
Bounderby when he explains his awful marriage predicament comes back to
haunt him when he finds Louisa never loved him and has abandoned their
marriage. Dickens thus outlines two scenarios in which a husband and wife
may be incompatible and could benefit greatly from fair marriage legislation.
The unhappy endings for Stephen Blackpool in death, Rachael in husbandless
care of her desired lover’s widow, Louisa in never marrying again or having
children, and Bounderby in premature death imply that there is no escaping
the mark of a bad marriage under such cruel, unmovable laws.

Class Distinction
In his novel, Hard Times, Charles Dickens used his characters to describe the
caste system that had been shaped by industrial England. By looking at three
main characters, Stephen Blackpool, Mr. Josiah Bounderby, and Mr. Thomas
Gradgrind, one can see the different classes that were industrial
England.Because he was just a hand, he was quickly suspected whereas young
Tom was not until much later, because he was of a higher social order. The
ordeals that Stephen Blackpool faced were used by the author to show the
troubles that the entire lower class faced. Mr. Josiah Bounderby was used as
an example of the growing middle class or bourgeoisie. He constantly talked of
how he had grown up on nothing (which was slightly exaggerated, but he still
did grow up poor) and was constantly flaunting his wealth. He bought a
country estate, something that many middle class members did to imitate the
upper classes. He married a daughter of a wealthy man and hired a former
member of high society to keep house for him. In general, he and other
members of the bourgeoisie attempted to become high society by acting like
them. The final class in industrial English society was the upper class, a class
represented in Hard Times by Mr. Thomas Gradgrind, the elder. This class
was presented in the novel as being less worried about money than the
bourgeoisie but having plenty of it. The Gradgrind estate, Stone Lodge, was
said to have “everything that the heart could desire”. Mr. Gradgrind spared
no expense when it came to his children’s educations (although he later found
his methods to be flawed) and was quick to donate money to those who helped
him,

There are many unequal and unhappy marriages in Hard Times, including
those of Mr. And Mrs. Gradgrind, Stephen Blackpool and his unnamed

Bounderby’s marriage to the young Louisa, as she Hoped to marry him

her to Misinterpret the situation. Rather than ending up in a pit of shame by

Smoke Serpents
At a literal level, the streams of smoke that fill the skies above Coketown are
the Effects of industrialization. However, these smoke serpents also represent
the moral Blindness of factory owners like Bounderby. Because he is so
concerned with making As much profit as he possibly can, Bounderby
interprets the serpents of smoke as a Positive sign that the factories are
producing goods and profit. Thus, he not only fails To see the smoke as a form
of unhealthy pollution, but he also fails to recognize his Own abuse of the
Hands in his factories. The smoke becomes a moral smoke screen That
prevents him from noticing his workers’ miserable poverty. Through its
associations with evil, the word “serpents” evokes the moral obscurity that the

Circus
With clowns, acrobats, and elaborate horse-riding shows based on legendary
themes, the circus symbolizes the triumph of imagination and whimsy, or
what Mr. Gradgrind would call “fancy.” The circus features such
performance pieces as the enticingly named “equestrians Tyrolean flower-
act,” which presumably combines flowers and horses in a creative way.
Another performance features Master Kidderminster as Cupid, complete with
“curls, wreaths, and wings.” These performances provide factory workers an
escape from the monotony and squalor of everyday life.Even though wealthy
men such as Mr. Gradgrind and Mr. Bounderby dismiss circus performers as
disreputable slackers, circus performances require great skill and extensive
training, showing the variety of expertise and ability that can lead to a
productive and satisfying life, one most definitely not based on fact. The circus
represents not merely the escape entertainment provides but also a broader
understanding of what success and prosperity can mean. The dismissal of the
circus, in turn, represents a restrictive worldview that neglects the validity of
fanciful human joy.

Now, what I want is Facts. Teach these boys and girls nothing but Facts. Facts
alone are Wanted in life. Plant nothing else, and root out everything else. You
can only form the Mind of reasoning animals upon Facts: nothing else will
ever be of any service to them. This is the Principle on which I bring up my
own children, and this is the principle on which I bring up These children.
)Stick to Facts, sir!” (Book 1/ Ch. 1/ p. 1
These are the novel’s opening lines. Spoken by Mr. Gradgrind, they sum up
his Rationalist philosophy. In claiming that “nothing else will ever be of
service” to his Pupils, Gradgrind reveals his belief that facts are important
because they enable Individuals to further their own interests. However, Tom
and Louisa’s unhappy Childhood soon calls into question their father’s claim
that “*facts alone are wanted in Life.” Ironically, while Gradgrind refers to
the pupils in his school as “reasoning Animals” and compares their minds to
fertile soil in which facts can be sowed, he treats Them like machines by
depriving them of feeling and fantasy. His jarringly short Sentences and
monotonous repetition of the word “Fact” illustrate his own Mechanical,
unemotional character. Finally, it is significant that Gradgrind’s call for Facts
opens a work of fiction. By drawing attention to the fact that we are reading
Fiction, Dickens suggests to us that facts alone cannot bring intellectual
pleasure.

Here we get our first good look at Coketown, the setting for Most of the novel.
Dickens uses his descriptions of the town To criticize the path his country took
in the 19th century. During the 19th century, Britain pursued a series of
policies That transformed its towns into industrial powerhouses, Devoted to
producing goods at factories. Such factories. Made Britain immensely
wealthy, but also crippled most of Its population: men and women were
horribly injured in Factories, families lived in poverty, and the country’s cities
Themselves were made exceptionally dirty and ugly (although Dickens
describes this ugliness in a rather racist Way here).Coketown, we can see, was
supposed to be a beautiful brick Town—i.e., industrialization was supposed to
make it a Utopia. Instead, factories have made it hideously ugly, a clear
Example of the limits of mechanization. ،

In this passage, Dickens’s talent for pathos is on full display,As is his critique
of Britain’s cruel Utilitarianism. Sissy, one of The main characters of the
novel, has been abandoned by Her father, Signore Jupe, because he couldn’t
find the means To support his child. Ashamed, he ran away. Now, Sissy is
Without a home. And yet she continues to worship her Father—she can’t
understand the harsh truth, which is that He ran out on her. The passage is
moving because we the Readers know the truth about Sissy, but Sissy doesn’t.
The passage also helps us see what’s so inadequate about Gradgrind’s way of
looking at the world. Sympathy and Emotion are vital parts of the human
experience, but Gradgrind, and many of the other characters, ignore Emotion
altogether. In doing so, Dickens suggests, they’re Missing out on one of the
essential aspects of life and Humanity.

1/ Ch. 8/ p. 41)
In this passage, Tom, still a young man, claims to be irritated With his
father’s emphasis on facts and figures—instead of Accepting Gradgrind’s
example, he rebels, claiming that he Would like to destroy all the facts that
Gradgrind is Obsessed with. The passage is a great example of how
Utilitarianism can actually have an opposite effect on its Pupils; i.e. instead of
making its pupils efficient and hardworking, it just makes them miserable and
soulless. (As we’ll See later, Tom grows up to be a lazy, bitter man—hardly
the Image of efficiency and intelligence that Gradgrind had Hoped for.)the
passage further complicates Tom’s character by Suggesting that Tom’s only
joy in life is manipulating other People—he seems to take pleasure in
manipulating Mr.Bounderby (as we’ll see, Bounderby has a crush on
Louisa). It’s as if Tom’s upbringing has been so harsh and soulless That
manipulating others is his only source of pleasure.

“Stephen looked older, but he had had a hard life. It is said that every life

Here we're Introduced to Stephen Blackpool. Stephen is an Important
character—critics have pointed out that he’s the Only important character in
all of Dickens who actually Works at a factory. Dickens’s portrait of
Blackpool is tragic To the extreme: Blackpool’s life as a laborer has left his
body Horribly scarred. Dickens clarifies his point with an Interesting analogy:
if the average human being has his Share of pain and happiness, then Stephen
has had his Happiness stolen away from him, and in its place received an
Extra share of pain. Critics often point to the passage as an example of
Dickens’s socialist ideas. Stephen, one could argue, has been Robbed of the
fruits of his own labors by wealthy capitalists Like Bounderby: instead of
being adequately rewarded for All the hard work he does, he’s underpaid and
overworked.

In this passage, Mr. Bounderby fires Stephen for refusing to Inform about the
rising union in the factory. Stephen isn’t an Outspoken supporter of the
union, but he’s loyal enough to Keep from “ratting” about the union to
Bounderby.Bounderby callously tells Stephen that he can finish his Work and
leave the factory. Even after Stephen explains that He’ll never be able to get
another job after he’s fired, Bounderby ignores him. Bounderby, we can be
pretty sure by now, is a heartless Character. He thinks of his employees as
animals, or cogs in A big machine—to be replaced at any time. Bounderby
Represents the dark side of the emphasis on facts and Figures—because he’s
predisposed to think in terms of Numbers, and therefore profits, he has no
compunction About ruining Stephen’s career, or even about viewing him As a
real, suffering human being.

In this passage, Harthouse begins his seduction of Louisa. Harthouse pretends
to run into Louisa by accident; then he Proceeds to flatter her excessively.
Because Louisa has Never been treated with anything but callous efficiency,
She’s immediately interested in Harthouse; he represents An alternative to
her usual way of life. The passage also suggests that what really interests
Louisa About Harthouse isn’t exactly his flattery—rather, it’s his Association
with Tom, Louisa’s beloved brother. Louisa Shows affection for Tom long
after the point when it’s Obvious that Tom doesn’t really love her. She has
nobody Else to love, and so she pours all of her emotion and Affection into her
lazy, undeserving brother. Harthouse Realizes this, and so emphasizes his
relationship to Tom in Order to endear himself to Louisa.

Louisa’s supposed infidelity, but at the last minute she loses Sight of Louisa.
Sparsit was so desperate for revenge that She bursts into tears. It’s hard to
