AIR-CONDITIONING AND VENTILATION SYSTEMS

Assessment Task 1. Cooling Load Calculations

Solve the following problems on an A4 sheet of bond paper. Box only your final answer. Any form
of erasure/alteration is considered wrong.

1. The exterior wall of a single-story office building is 3m high and 15m long. The wall consists of
100mm face brick, a 40mm polystyrene board, a 150mm lightweight concrete block, and an
interior 16 mm gypsum board. The wall contains three single glass windows 1.5m high by 2m
long. Consider air space between the face brick and the insulating board. Calculate the heat loss
through the wall at design conditions if the inside temperature is 24 oC. Outside conditions are
35oC DB and 60%.
2. Compute the total heat gain for the south window of an office building that has no external
shading. The windows are double-glazed with 6mm air space and with a regular plate inside and
out. Draperies with a shading coefficient of 0.7 are fully closed. Make the calculation for 12 noon
in a.) August, and b.) December at 32 o north latitude. The total window area is 40 m 2. Assume
that the indoor temperatures are 25 oC and 20 oC and that the outdoor temperatures are 37 oC
and 40 oC.

Assessment Task 2. Cooling Load Calculations

Solve the following problems on an A4 sheet of bond paper. Box only your final answer. Any form
of erasure/alteration is considered wrong.

3. The exterior wall of a single-story office building is 3m high and 15m long. The wall consists of
100mm face brick, 40mm polystyrene insulating board, 150-mm lightweight concrete block, and
an interior 16-mm gypsum board. The wall contains three single-glass windows 1.5m high by 2m
long. Calculate the heat transmission through the wall at design condition if the inside
temperature is 20 oC and outside temperature is 32 oC.
4. Compute the heat gain for the window facing southeast at 32 oC north latitude at 10:00 AM
central daytime on August 21st. The window is regular double glass with 13 mm air space. The
glass and inside draperies have a combined shading coefficient of 0.45. The indoor design
temperature is 25 oC, and the outdoor temperature is 37 oC. Window dimensions are 2m wide
and 1.5m high. The window is recessed 300mm from the outer surface of the wall. Determine
the heat gain through transmission.
5. A computer room located on the second floor of a five-story office is 10m by 7m. The exterior
wall is 3.5m high and 10m long; it is a metal curtain wall (steel backed with 10mm of the
insulating board), 75mm of glass fiber insulation, and 16mm of gypsum board. Single-glazed
windows make up 30 percent of the exterior wall. The computer and lights in the room operate
24hr/day and have a combined heat release to the space of 2kW. The indoor temperature is 20
o
C. If the building is located in Manila with an outside temperature of 35 oC, what would be the
load if the windows were double-glazed?
