Divergenerate
by Amy Gunderson

I love the idea of using stitches as lines

on a canvas. Sketching out a rough
idea, and then using the magic of
geometry and math to create a real-
life representation of that sketch is
super fun. This sweater was dreamt up
as an exercise in another episode of
"can I do this with my knitting"?

It's designed to be a bit cropped as

shown. Because of the nature of the
design, it's tough to adjust the length
without making signicant changes to
some of the rates of movement and
increases in the lower body. The
cropped aspect, plus the narrowed
waist and zipper, makes this sweater
reminiscent of a sort of fancy
motorcycle jacket.

A tweedy wool yarn is held together

with a laceweight silk mohair blend
throughout this sweater. Pieces are
knit at and seamed together, which
might not seem like very much fun. But
due to the shifting cables and varying raglan decreases for sleeves and body, trust me – it's much
easier to follow as written. Plus, the seams give this sporty number stability and a more nished
look.

Yarn Characteristics
The sample shown uses a DK-weight plied yarn that is mostly wool held together with a
silk/mohair laceweight yarn. Held together, these yarns have good stitch denition, good elasticity,
and a nice halo from the silk/mohair yarn. One strand of worsted weight yarn could be used instead.
Make sure it's a wool or mostly wool blend, or acrylic or mostly acrylic blend, to keep the same
structure and stitch denition as shown in the photos and to help the cables pop.
