Lesson 5: Causes, Consequences and Controversies of Population Growth and Economic
Development
Learning Activities:

• Think of other measure to CURB surge of population. Cite only ONE then explain.

Family planning is one of the most effective measures to curb the surge of population. It refers to
the conscious effort of individuals and couples to control the number and spacing of their
children through the use of various contraceptive methods and reproductive healthcare services.
Family planning empowers individuals to make informed decisions about when to have children,
how many children to have, and how far apart they want their pregnancies. By preventing
unintended pregnancies, family planning can help stabilize population growth. Smaller family
sizes can alleviate economic pressures on families and societies. Parents can invest more
resources in each child’s education, healthcare, and well-being. With family planning, families
can better manage their resources, leading to reduced poverty and an improvement in living
standards. Family planning encompasses a comprehensive range of contraceptive methods and
reproductive healthcare services that allow people to exercise control over the timing and
number of their children. By reducing unintended pregnancies, improving maternal health, and
empowering women, family planning not only impacts demographic trends but also contributes
to social, economic, and environmental development. With stable population growth, it allows
governments and communities to better allocate resources for social development programs like
education, healthcare, and infrastructure.
