My heartfelt appreciation goes to the H.O.D. Prof. (Mrs) F.I. Akinnibosun and my supervisor

from the University of Benin, Dr. C.E. Oshoma of the Department of Microbiology. To my

industry-based supervisor Mrs. Iyelumi Augustina thank you for your teachings, encouragement

and for investing your time and resources in me.

I also thank the entire staff of Graceland Medical Centre for making my stay at the hospital a

memorable experience. Special thanks go to the CEO and Founder of Graceland Medical centre,

Prof. Michael Emefiele Aziken for giving me the opportunity to be able to perform my Industrial

Training in his hospital. And to the H.O.D. of the Laboratory, Miss Marian and my superior, Mr.

Obaro. Finally, my love and gratitude goes to my friend and I.T Colleague at Graceland Medical

Centre, Mustpaha Aisha for your unrelenting support, encouragement and for making my

ABSTRACT

This report is a summary of the experience I acquired during my six months Student

Industrial Work Experience Scheme (SIWES) in GRACELAND MEDICAL CENTRE, Edo

State. I worked in the lab assisting the lab scientists in performing series of medical tests for

patients. I acquired special knowledge and skills in carrying out most of the medical tests which

are: Packed cell volume (PCV), Malaria parasite test (MP), syphilis test, hepatitis test, urinalysis

test, Full blood count (FBC), Blood grouping test, among others. I was opportuned to work in

four (4) sections which are phlebotomy section, hematology/Immunohematology section,

serology section and clinical microbiology section. These sections have exposed me to

precautions, rules and regulations of the laboratory, how to diagnose patients and how the tests

are being analysed.

I also acquired knowledge in Basic Laboratory Practices, preparation of media, microbial

isolation and culture, Microscopy, Gram staining, Sterilization techniques. I was also trained in

handling and use of laboratory equipments and machineries like the incubator, refrigerator,

autoclave, centrifuge and clear idea in all operative carried out in the hospital Lab.

Most importantly, it describes the activities and my experience gained during the period of the

training, it also stated the problems encountered and also gave suggestion for improvement of the scheme.
