EASTER TRIDUUM, EASTER SEASON
In his lifetime St. Thomas of Villanova was already called
"the almsgiver" and "the father of the poor". His parents
instilled a yearning to help the poor, a characteristic that
became his legacy. His liturgical feast is celebrated every 22nd
day of September.
The earliest Officia Propria OSA had its
latest updates in 1839 which shows that
St. Thomas’ feast was celebrated on
September 18. Perhaps some years after
that, there had been a change from
September 18 to September 22 as shown
in this Table of the Proper Augustinian
Saints by 1916’s Edition of Officia
Propria PSA. This has been the
traditional feast of Saint Thomas of
Villanova retained in the practices of
parishes of Augustinians around the
country. In this edition, the octave of
Thomas was abolished.
This is a digitized table of the Proper
of Saints of the 1673 Officia Propria
Ordinis Sancti Augustini which shows
that in the 17th century and even
before that, St. Thomas of Villanova
was celebrated on September 18, a day
after the Octave (8 days ‘extension”) of
the feast of St. Nicholas of Tolentino,
Augustinian priest celebrated on
September 10. Thomas’ feast had its
own octave as well.

Works
He asked to become Bishop of Granada but turned down the offer because
he wanted to live a more modest life. When he became Archbishop of
Valencia he found an archdiocese in spiritual chaos. He began his
episcopacy by visiting every parish in the Archdiocese to discover the
people's needs.
In 1550 he started Presentation Seminary, a seminary where the young
clergy were trained to become ordained. He turned his own home into a
sort of soup kitchen and shelter, giving to the poor and the homeless food
to eat and a place to sleep. For that reason he was known as Beggar Bishop
and Father of the Poor.
In 1544 Charles V nominated him to the See of Valencia by Pope Paul III.
He was consecrated at Valladolid and served as Prior Provincial, Visitator
and Visitor. The See of Valencias was ranked as first class because of its size
and resources.

DEATH
On August 28, 1555, on the feast of
Saint Augustine, Thomas

Over the next 12 days he grew
gradually weaker. As he was
nearing death, he distributed to
the needy what few personal
belongings he still possessed, he
died because of Angina Pectoris.
CANONIZATION
Thomas of Villanova was later beatified on October
7, 1618, by Pope Paul V. And he was canonized into
sainthood on November 1, 1658, by Pope Alexander
VII.
