WHY UNDERTAKE CHARDHAM YATRA

SPIRITUAL REASONS

The primary reason to visit Chardham for the devout is for the most obvious-
spiritual upliftment. Every Hindu who has visited these four sacred spots feels a
divine connection from within. The inner peace and contentment the pilgrims feel
is unexplainable in mere words. It is believed that unless the higher power attracts
the soul, no one can put a single toe on this land of Gods. Embarking on a journey
for Chardham is like fulfilling a religious duty. Pilgrims believe that visiting these
holy places not only washes away all the sins accumulated through numerous
births and rebirths but also prepares one's soul for the journey towards
'Enlightenment'.

SCIENTIFIC REASONS
There are many scientific reasons to embark on this journey too putting aside the
spiritual reasons. The difficult trek challenges one out of his comfort zone.
Climbing up mountains needs discipline and stamina. Mountain is a very strict
teacher in that sense. The undisciplined will not be able to reach his destiny. Every
day, one has to follow a strict schedule whether one goes solo or with a travel
company. Therefore, through the pilgrimage one can check one's physical stamina
and will power. Moreover, the fresh air revitalizes us to great extent. The trekking
is tough but the winding hilly path through serene hilly woods and rivers makes
one feel oneness with nature. The beautiful scenery itself is a reason to embark on
this journey and relish the beauty of the mountains.

MEDICAL REASONS

Sedentary lifestyle is a bane in today's world which has given rise to numerous
medical complications. Trekking through the mountains has many medical
benefits. First of all, the tough trek toughens the muscles and bones as well as the
heart muscles. It is also puts a challenge to one's will power. There are many who
are physically challenged and completes the Chardham yatra by sheer mental
stamina and will power. This is indeed a fulfilling journey. The pure oxygen wafting
through the hills is rejuvenating. Filling your lungs with the fresh air fills you up
with all the energy needs to complete the journey. During the journey, it is
prohibited to take non-vegetarian food and alcohol drinks. Therefore, the plain
food habit flushes out the toxins and restores the pink of health. Also, taking holy
dip in the thermal water tanks has many medicinal advantages. The hot springs
are full of many lifesaving minerals and bathing in it cures many chronic illness.
The doctors also subscribe to the therapeutic values of the hot water spouts. Last
but not least, the absolute tranquility of the snowy mountains has a meditative
ambience which relieves you of the constant meaningless chattering of the mind
within. The chanting of mantras and the ringing of the bell echoing through the
mountains too help in embalming the torn and shattered soul in the maddening
crowd and complexities of the urban life. the absolute tranquility of the snowy

probably be greeted by red-cheeked kids with their welcoming smiles

Situated amidst the Garhwal Himalayas, Yamunotri in the state of Uttarakhand is naturally
bestowed with abundant beauty and charm. At a hovering altitude of 3293 meters, Yamunotri
lies adjacent to the Indo-Chinese border and is encircled by the lofty peaks on all sides. One of
the holiest centers in the Hindu pantheon, this sacred abode of the Asti muni boast of so many
unparallel vistas of nature.

Highly revered as the origin of the majestic River Yamuna, Yamunotri is famed for its glaciers,
and thermal springs that makes it one of the most important stopovers in the schedule of a
Hindu pilgrim. According to Hindu tradition, Yamuna is the sister of Yama, the god of death and
a holy dip in this river secures a painless death to the devotee

seeking peace and serenity in the lap of Himalayas. It is situated on the banks of Bhagirathi
River at an elevation of 2620 mts above sea level. This quaint hamlet has become popular in

related to Goddess Ganga, the river that we know as Ganges. The history of Gangotri dates
back to centuries when Goddess Ganga transformed herself into a river to dissolve the sins of
King Bhagirath’s forefathers, following his penance. Gangotri is a popular pilgrim place in India,
which stands at an altitude of 3042m and emits a highly pious aura. Religious rituals are in full
swing in the Gangotri temple with the Arti ceremony performed by the pujaris of the Semwal
family.

Kedar-khanda, in Garhwal Himalayas of Rudraprayag district in Uttrakhand, India. It is known for
its ancient Vishwanath Temple dedicated to the god Shiva, which is similar to the one in
Varanasi

Kedarnath

Kedarnath is ancient and magnificent temple is located in the Rudra Himalaya range, is over a
thousand years old, built of massive stone slabs over a large rectangular platform. Ascending
through the large gray steps leading to the holy sanctums we find inscriptions in Pali on the
steps. The present temple was built by Adi Shankaracharya. The inner walls of the temple
sanctum are adorned with figures of various deities and scenes from mythology. According to
legends, the Pandavas sought the blessings of lord Shiva to atone their sin after the battle of
Mahabharata. Lord Shiva eluded them repeatedly and while fleeing took refuge at Kedarnath in
the form of a bull. On being followed, he dived into ground leaving behind his hump on the
surface. Outside the temple door a large statue of the Nandi Bull stands as guard.. It is at this
time, that the doors of the temple are thrown open to pilgrims, who flock from all parts of India,
for a holy pilgrimage.

Joshimath

Nestled with love in the Chamoli district of Uttarakhand, the sacred town of Joshimath spreads
its celestial aura in the entire Garhwal region of Uttarakhand.

The town of Joshimath is also nicknamed as Jyotirmath and is the winter seat of Lord Badri,
whose idol is brought down from Badrinath temple to Shri Narshim Ji Temple   temple at
Joshimath. This holy town is revered by the Hindus for being an important pilgrimage center of
the country. Joshimath is also known for  Shri Adi-Sankara's Mutt of the northern region.

Badrinath

Sandwiched between Nar and Narayan mountain ranges, Badrinath in the Chamoli district of
Uttarakhand is one among the most sought after pilgrim centers in the Indian subcontinent.
Badrinath is beautifully set in the backdrop of the colossal Neelkanth mountain peak and never
fails to make the visitor spellbound with its unparalleled gorgeousness.. The term Badrinath is a
derivative of badri, which means the place where beries grow abundantly.

A place, which holds so many myths and legends, Badrinath acquires predominance in the travel
itinerary of a pilgrim. The popular belief is that Badarinath was the domain of Lord Shiva, and
Lord Vishnu managed to unseat Shiva from here to Kedarnath. Another belief is that when
Ganga made her descend to earth she split up in to twelve streams and one among the
channels, Alakananda felt on Kedarnath which gives Badrinath it's majestic look.

It is not just recreational activities, shrines and pilgrimage that Badrinath offers. It proffers the
awesome beauty of the snow clad mountain peaks and the surging landscapes of the Garhwal
region.
