QUESTION NO 1 :
A stepped shaft ABC consist of two solid circular segments is subjected to
torques T1 = 2300 N.m and T2 = 900 N.m acting opposite directions, as shown in Figure 1. The
larger segment of the shaft has a diameter of d1 = 58 mm and length, L1 = 760 mm; the smaller
segment has a diameter of d2 = 45 mm and length, L2 = 510 mm. The material is made up of
steel with shear modulus G = 76 GPa.
(a) Calculate the maximum shear stress in the shaft and the angle of twist (in
degrees) at end C.
(b) What is the required diameter of segment BC and resulting twist at end C?
if the maximum shear stress in BC is same as AB.
Reaction at A: ΣT = TA-T1+T2 = 0
TA = T1-T2 = 2300Nm-900Nm = 1400Nm
Segment AB:
Cut segment AB according to the torque equilibrium for eft hand side:
π d4
ΣT = TAB+TA=0 Ip =
32
TAB= -1400Nm
T ( d /2 ) 16 T 16 ×(−1400000 Nmm)
(τAB)max =
Ip
= 3
πd
= 3.14 ¿¿
= −¿36.5MPa
TL TL 32 (−1400000 Nmm) ×(760 mm) ×32
φAB = G I p = G = πd
4 = ( 76 ×103 MPa ) 3.14 ¿ ¿ = −0.0126 rad
Segment BC:
cut segment BC according to the torque equilibrium for left hand side
π d4
ΣT = TBC+TA-T1 = 0 Ip =
32
TBC = -TA+T1=900Nm
T ( d /2 ) 16 T 16 ×( 900000 Nmm)
(τBC)max = Ip = π d3 = 3.14 ¿ ¿
= 50.3 MPa
TL TL 32 (900000 Nmm)×(510 mm)×32
φBC = G I p = G = πd
4 = ( 76 ×103 MPa ) 3.14 ¿ ¿ = 0.015 rad
Comparing (τAB)max and (τBC)max give
the maximum shear stress in the bar is 50.3MPa
The angle of twist at point C is:
