_________

I – Multiple Choice. Read the questions carefully and pick the letter of your
answers from the given choices.

_______ 1.Which set of attributes best describes a scientist?

a. creative, reactive, reluctant

b. hesitant, aggressive, patient

c. honest, hardworking, irrational

d. open-minded, curious, resourceful

_______ 2. Which is the logical sequence of steps in solving a problem using the
scientific method?

a. conclude → ask → hypothesize → observe → experiment

b. experiment → observe → ask → conclude → hypothesize

c. hypothesize → ask → observe → experiment → conclude

d. observe → ask → hypothesize → experiment → conclude

_______ 3. A homogeneous mixture that combines a solute and a solvent.

a. Element b. Compound c. Pure Substance d. Solution

_______ 4. A pure substance that cannot be separated into simpler substances by

physical or chemical means.

a. Element b. Compound c. Mixture d. Solution

_______ 5. A pure substance composed of two or more elements that are chemically
combined.

a. Element b. Compound c. Mixture d. Solution

_______ 6. A combination of two or more substances that are not chemically

combined.

a. Element b. Compound c. Mixture d. Solution

________ 7. The measure of the amount of solute dissolved in a solution.

a. Concentration b. Evaporation c. Solubility d. Dilution

________ 8. The measure of how easily a solute will dissolve in a solvent.

a. Concentration b. Evaporation c. Solubility d, Dilution

________ 9. 10. Which statement describes solutions?

a. homogeneous mixtures with fixed composition

b. heterogeneous mixtures with fixed composition

c. homogeneous mixtures with variable composition

d. heterogeneous mixtures with variable composition

_______ 10. What should a person do to dilute a solution?

a. Heat the solution.

b. Refrigerate the solution.

c. Add more solute to the solution.

d. Add more solvent to the solution.

II – Arrange the following according to the steps of the scientific method. Put the
numbers 1 to 5 on the blanks according to their order. (2 pts each)

_______ Fill two identical containers with the same amount of room temperature
water. Add a measured amount of sugar to one of the containers. Place the two
containers into the freezer. At regular intervals of 15 minutes, open the freezer and
observe the status of the water in each container. Continue until both have completely
frozen. Write down the time it took for each container of water to reach a fully frozen
level.

________ Based on the results of your experiment, come to a conclusion as to

whether water with sugar freezes faster, slower, or at the same rate as water without
sugar added.

________ I want to know if water freezes faster on its own or with sugar added to it.

________ Look at the time it took for each container of water to freeze. Did the water
with sugar added take a significantly longer or shorter amount of time to freeze?

________ The null hypothesis is that there will be no difference in how long it takes
the water to freeze, whether or not it has sugar added to it. The alternative hypothesis
is that there will be a statistically significant difference in freezing time between the
two scenarios.

III. Modified True or False. Write true if the statement is correct. Otherwise,
write false and change the underlined word to make the statement correct. Write
your answer on the line. (2 pts each)
1. Compounds are physically combined elements.

2. Pure substances can be classified as elements or mixtures.

3. Elements cannot be broken down into simpler substances.

4. Nonmetals are good conductors of electricity.

5. Compounds can be decomposed into simpler substances

through chemical means.

IV. Classification. Classify each of the given examples of matter. Write E (element),

C (compound), or M (mixture) on the line.

1. table sugar _____

2. carbon dioxide _____

3. helium _____

4. spaghetti sauce _____

5. milk _____

6. ammonia _____

7. nitrogen _____

8. paint _____

9. soft drink _____

10. rubbing alcohol _____

V. Problem Solving. Answer the given problems. Show your solution.

1. Calculate the concentration (in percent by volume) of a solution produced by
mixing 75 mL of acetic acid and 725 g of water. Assume that the volumes are
additive and the density of water is 1.0 g/mL.

2. How will you prepare a 250 g sugar-water solution that is 15% by mass?

3. The solubility of sugar in water at 20°C is 200 g/100 mL water. Assuming you
prepared your sugar-water solution in item 2 at 20°C, is your solution saturated,
unsaturated, or supersaturated? Justify your answer. Criteria: content (5 pts),
conciseness (3 pts) grammar (2 pts)
