Lesson 1. Patterns and Numbers in Nature

Highlights

A. What are the three (3) types of pattern?

1. Numeric Patterns

2. Geometric Patterns

3. Patterns of Change

B. What is Golden ratio and what is its estimated value?

- The Golden ratio is the ratio in which the ratio of the whole segment to the
longer segment is the same as the ratio of the longer segment to the shorter
segment.

- The estimated value of the Golden ratio is 1.618.

C. What is a fractal?

- A fractal is a type of random pattern with each part having the same
characteristics as the whole.

Answer Week 1 HW Nos. 1 - 4

Lesson 2. Systemizing Patterns using Mathematics

Highlights

A. Describe a Logarithmic Spiral.

- A Logarithmic spiral is a drawn spiral from a golden triangle. The spiral is

drawn through the vertices of the made golden triangles. This also follows
the golden ratio.

B. Describe a Golden Spiral.

- A Golden spiral is drawn the same way as the logarithmic spiral but based on
a golden rectangle instead of a golden triangle. The corners of the squares
can be connected by quarter-circles to produce the golden spiral.

C. Enumerate and describe five (5) of the 17 equations that changed the world.
1. Pythagorean Theorem - determines the shortest distance between two
points.
2. Law of Gravity – model for understanding the solar system. Key concept in
understanding forces.
3. Gaussian Distribution – used in statistics to generalize events. Can also be
used to measure abilities such as IQ scores.
4. Euler’s Formula – linked the DNA structure to geometry. Instrumental in
designing rockets for outer space.
5. Einstein’s Relativity – expresses that energy and mass are the same
physical entity, thus, can be change into each other.

Answer Week 1 HW Nos. 5 and 6

Lesson 3. Systemizing Functionality of Mathematics

Highlights

How is mathematics utilized in the following areas?

A. Pharmaceutical Field

o Mathematics is utilized by working on the data about drugs.

o Chemical equations are also governed by mathematical laws.

B. Agriculture

o Graphs are used to judge the progress of the production.

o The land area, investment, and business mathematics are all present
and used daily.

C. Engineering

o Numerical analysis serves as a foundation in modelling and solving

engineering problems.
o Most mechanics and theoretical constructs are applied to improve the
other aspects or ideas.

(use the HW template for your answers)

1. Determine the next number in the sequence: 9, 4, 3, 121, 37, 84, ___ .

2. A Fibonacci prime is a Fibonacci number which is also a prime number. What

are the first five (5) Fibonacci primes?

3. Answer Exercise 1.1 No. 1 (page 10). [Refer to Mathematics in the Modern
World by Adina and Earnhart].

4. A diagonal of a regular polygon is a line segment that connects two non-

adjacent vertices. How many diagonals can be formed if the polygon has

a) 3 sides?
b) 4 sides?
c) 5 sides?
d) n sides?

5. Use the golden ratio to divide a line segment L with length of 25 meters into
two segments L1 and L2. Specify the lengths rounded off to 2 decimal places.

6. Construct a golden spiral that involves a golden rectangle with length 4 meters.
