Job Description: Gas cylinder Storage
1. Must have PPE – safety footwear, gloves, hardhat, goggles, protective clothing etc.
2. Must have appropriate tools and equipment in good condition.
3. Must have weatherproof covers for materials and equipment, waste containers, warning tape.
4. Consider risks and hazards in work area. Refer any concerns to supervisor. Are relevant permits in place?
5. Check if it is necessary to secure area adjacent to work. Refer to supervisor if appropriate.
6. Arrange for transport of materials and equipment to site via supervisor.
7. Ensure materials and equipment are secure or removed when site unattended, eg overnight or during breaks.

8. For security and ventilation purposes, a wire mesh fence should surround the storage area. Keep the enclosure locked and appoint
a responsible person in charge of the keys to control the issuing of cylinders.
9. A register of cylinders in stock and movement of cylinders must be kept.
10. Empty cylinders must be immediately returned to empties store and before locked away, a check must be carried out to ensure
that the valves had been tightly closed.
11. All necessary danger signs must be prominently displaced at storage area.
12. Flammable and oxidising gasses must not be stored together. Greases and oils must never be allowed to come into contact with
oxygen.
13. Inspect all cylinders entering your premises before accepting them to ensure that they are not leaking.
14. If a cylinder in the storage area is found to be leaking, more it to a safe area.
15. If a detached storage area is not available and the storage area forms part of a building used for another purpose, the following
should be applied:
15.1. Position the storage against an outside wall.
15.2. Segregate the store from the rest of the building by walls having a fire resistance of at lease two hours.
15.3. The external wall should preferably be light construction to vent explosions outwards, the provision being that such
venting does not present a hazard to people and property.
15.4. Doors must only be provided in external walls and should not permit communication with the rest of the building.
16. Ventilate the area at both high and low levels, but if satisfactory natural ventilation cannot be provided, then mechanical ventilation
should be installed.
17. If electrical lighting is required, it should be of an approved type.
