Harm
Potential Death, Minor/major cuts and contusion, loss of limbs, fractures, damage to respiratory system, electric shock.

Persons in danger

1. Welder, Labor, and storekeeper

2. Other workers/visitors in vicinity, eg. Passers - by in nearby area, etc.

Control measures

No lone working

1. Storage areas should, whenever possible, be well clear of buildings.

2. A protective covering must be provided.
3. Adequate ventilation must be provided.
4. Storage areas must be kept free from all combustible materials. No other materials must be stored in cylinder enclosure.
5. Full cylinders must be kept apart from empty cylinders so that it will not be necessary to open valves to check whether cylinders
are empty or full. Mark empty cylinders clearly and store in space provided.
6. Cylinders must always stand upright. Special stands must be used or cylinders must be chained in upright position – each cylinder
must be chained separately.
7. Cylinders must be stored in rows with aisles in between for easy removal in event of fire.

8. For security and ventilation purposes, a wire mesh fence should surround the storage area. Keep the enclosure locked and appoint
a responsible person in charge of the keys to control the issuing of cylinders.
9. A register of cylinders in stock and movement of cylinders must be kept.
10. Empty cylinders must be immediately returned to empties store and before locked away, a check must be carried out to ensure
that the valves had been tightly closed.
11. All necessary danger signs must be prominently displaced at storage area.
12. Flammable and oxidising gasses must not be stored together. Greases and oils must never be allowed to come into contact with
oxygen.
13. Inspect all cylinders entering your premises before accepting them to ensure that they are not leaking.
14. If a cylinder in the storage area is found to be leaking, more it to a safe area.
15. If a detached storage area is not available and the storage area forms part of a building used for another purpose, the following
should be applied:
15.1. Position the storage against an outside wall.
15.2. Segregate the store from the rest of the building by walls having a fire resistance of at lease two hours.
15.3. The external wall should preferably be light construction to vent explosions outwards, the provision being that such
venting does not present a hazard to people and property.
15.4. Doors must only be provided in external walls and should not permit communication with the rest of the building.
16. Ventilate the area at both high and low levels, but if satisfactory natural ventilation cannot be provided, then mechanical ventilation
should be installed.
17. If electrical lighting is required, it should be of an approved type.
