Subject: Theory of Machine (4ME4-07)
Question Bank I MT (2022-23)

Part - A
1. State angle of repose?
2. Write the function of clutch.
3. Define Instantaneous Centre?
4. State Coriolis component of Acceleration.
5. Differentiate Lower pair and higher pair.

Part - B
1. Discuss the expression of total frictional torque for flat pivot Bearing considering:
(i) Uniform pressure condition,
(ii) Uniform wear condition.
2. Sketch and explain the various inversions of a Four bar chain.
3. Sketch and explain the various inversions of a Single slider crank chain.
4. A load of 10 kN is raised by means of a screw jack, having a square threaded screw of 12
mm pitch and of mean diameter 50 mm. If a force of 100 N is applied at the end of a
lever to raise the load, what should be the length of the lever used? Take coefficient of
friction = 0.15. Compute the mechanical advantage obtained? State whether the screw is
self-locking.

Part - C
1. A dry single plate clutch is to be designed for an automotive vehicle whose engine is
rated to give 100 kW at 2400 r.p.m. and maximum torque 500 N-m. The outer radius of
friction plate is 25% more than the inner radius. The intensity of pressure between the
plate is not to exceed 0.07 N/mm2. The coefficient of friction may be assumed equal to
0.3. The helical springs required by this clutch to provide axial force necessary to engage
the clutch are eight. If each spring has stiffness equal to 40 N /mm, Determine the initial
compression in the springs and dimensions of the friction plate.
2. A band and block brake, having 14 blocks each of which subtends an angle of 15° at the
centre, is applied to a drum of 1 m effective diameter. The drum and flywheel mounted
on the same shaft has a mass of 2000 kg and a combined radius of gyration of 500 mm.
The two ends of the band are attached to pins on opposite sides of the brake lever at
distances of 30 mm and 120 mm from the fulcrum. If a force of 200 N is applied at a
distance of 750 mm from the fulcrum, Evaluate:
(i) Maximum braking torque,
(ii) Angular retardation of the drum,
(iii) Time taken by the system to come to rest from the rated speed of 360 r.p.m.
The coefficient of friction between blocks and drum may be taken as 0.25.
3. In a four-bar chain ABCD, AD is fixed and is 150 mm long. The crank AB is 40 mm
long and rotates at 120 rpm clockwise, while the link CD is 80 mm long oscillating about
D. BC and AD are of equal lengths, Find the angular velocity of link CD when angle
BAD is 60.
4. The crank and connecting rod of a theoretical steam engine are 0.5 m and 2 m long
respectively. The crank makes 180 rpm in the clockwise direction. When it has turned
45 from the inner dead centre position, Determine:
(i) Velocity of piston,
(ii) Angular velocity of connecting rod,
(iii) Velocity of point E on the connecting rod 1.5 m from gudgeon pin,
(iv) Velocities of rubbing at the pins of crank shaft, crank and cross head when the
diameter of their pins are 50 mm, 60 mm and 30 mm respectively.
