PADLET: What observable effects has COVID had on the labour market?

COVID-19 has affected labour markets worldwide, including Canada. Short-term and
long-term impacts are expected. Key consequences as of September 2021:

Rise in Unemployment: Hospitality, travel, and retail, which rely primarily on in-
person contacts, had major layoffs and job losses, raising the unemployment rate.

Many organisations switched to virtual work due to the pandemic's social isolation.
This trend is reassessing the requirement for actual office premises and forcing
people to move from city centres to suburbs or rural areas.

need for Tech Skills: Remote employment has increased need for digital skills in
information technology, cybersecurity, and digital marketing.

Growth of Gig Economy: More people are working freelance, contract, or part-time,
frequently through digital platforms, due to the pandemic.

Inequality: The pandemic has caused inequality. Due to their overrepresentation in

significantly impacted industries and increasing home duties from school closures,
women and racial and ethnic minorities have been disproportionately affected.

Workplace health and safety is a priority. Health and safety compliance jobs are in
demand, and they generally require COVID-19 protocol management.

Work-life balance, mental health support, and flexibility have become more crucial to
job seekers since the pandemic.

5. Answer the following questions:

• What obstacles are standing between you and the two job titles that you have
just researched? Do you have the skills and expertise required?

I know I have the skills for Marketing Coordinator and Marketing Analyst, but my
experience and professional network are lacking. However, intelligent preparation
can overcome these obstacles.

I'm interested in marketing internships, part-time jobs, and volunteering. These roles
will give me hands-on experience. I also want to build marketing plans for
hypothetical products or help local businesses and non-profits market.
I want to maximise online and offline networking opportunities. I'll participate in
LinkedIn groups and industry groups. I also enjoy attending industry events,
webinars, and workshops to ask questions and interact with experts. This gives me
marketing industry knowledge and work chances.

I also want to use my education. I'll use my college's career services to network with
alumni and find internship or job possibilities with their corporate partners.

Although it may take time, I am convinced that with perseverance and these strategic
efforts, I can bridge the gap between my current position and Marketing Coordinator
or Marketing Analyst.

• Identify two regions in Canada with good (3 stars) prospects.

Two regions in Canada with good (3 stars) prospects: Toronto and Quebec

• Do the salaries listed meet your expectations? Why or why not?

Toronto Marketing Coordinator and Marketing Analyst salaries fulfil my expectations.

I did extensive research on industry norms, taking into account factors like Toronto's
cost of living, the role's requirements, and the average salary for similar occupations.

I value learning opportunities, career progress, work-life balance, and a supportive

work environment as much as financial reward.

The compensation matches my expectations for my career level and will allow me to
sustain myself while gaining useful experience. As I gain expertise and add value to
the organisation, I expect wage rises and promotions.

• Are either of these job roles right to pursue after graduation? Why or why
not?

After graduation, marketing coordinator or analyst is a good choice for various

reasons.

First, they match my education and skills. I've studied marketing in college and can
use my knowledge and talents to these professions.

Second, both roles allow professional growth. As a Marketing Coordinator or Analyst,

I will develop and execute campaigns and analyse market trends and customer
behaviour. This broad experience will help me understand marketing and find my
niche.

Third, these jobs are in demand. Digital marketing and data-driven decision-making
are becoming more important, making these skills and experience transferable
across sectors.

Finally, these professions will allow you to use academic knowledge and develop
experience. This practical experience and academic understanding will improve my
marketing skills and open job prospects. Thus, I feel these roles post-graduation are
the perfect path to a rewarding marketing career.
