Restraint System Guidelines for Temporary
Pressure Lines: Scope

 Issued December 2012: Guideline is to be used for all drilling,

completion, work over activities, and any other rigless activities.
 The intent of the document is to provide field company
representatives minimum guidelines on the level of restraints to be
used for temporary lines. Typically, these will be used for cementing,
well testing, and aerated mud systems that are assembled by the use
of connectors.
– Lines smaller than 1-in. (25mm) ID are considered outside the scope of this
document. Both hard lines and flexible lines are within scope.
– Lines that will be rigged up for a three-month period or less are to be considered as
temporary lines.
– Actual testing procedures are covered under other guidelines and procedures.
– Non-compliance with this guideline requires a management of change (MOC) and
Risk Assessment to be conducted.

Restraint System Guidelines for Temporary
Pressure Lines: Classifications

 Level 1 – LOW-PRESSURE.
Examples would include the following:
 Liquid (non-compressible) filled pipelines below 500 PSI.
– Domestic water supply lines
– Fire pump hoses
– Single stage centrifugal pump lines
 Gaseous (compressible) filled below 200 PSI
– Shop compressed air lines
– Instrumentation lines
– Welding hoses

Restraint System Guidelines for Temporary
Pressure Lines: Required Mitigation

Level 1
 No further mitigation is required apart from following normal
Safe Work Practices as described in the Managing Safe Work
Procedures and complying with any additional local
requirements.
 For gaseous filled lines below 200 PSI, suitably sized whip
checks should be used.

Restraint System Guidelines for Temporary
Pressure Lines: Categories

 Level 2 – MEDIUM-PRESSURE.
Examples would include the following:
– Liquid filled lines 500 to 2,500 PSI
• Multi-stage centrifugal pump lines
• Diaphragm chemical injection pump lines,

Restraint System Guidelines for Temporary
Pressure Lines: Required Mitigation

Level 2
– Survey the proposed route of the temporary line and complete the
checklist per the type of restraint system is being utilized.
– The temporary line surrounding safety sensitive equipment should be fully
restrained for a radius of 25 ft (7.6 m) for hard line installations. Flexible
lines can be restrained at each connection.
– Level 2 lines to be installed and inspected under a Permit To Work (PTW)
due to the high potential hazards.
– Assess ways to determine if these can be closed for the entire duration of
the test and operation or procedure. If not (example would be an
emergency exit route) then the temporary line should be fully restrained
for a radius of 25 ft (7.6 m) from the access way or other mitigation put
into place.
– If an exclusion zone cannot be established or if the company
representative determines that it is required, then Level 3 mitigation will
be installed

Restraint System Guidelines for Temporary
Pressure Lines: Categories

 Level 3 – HIGH-PRESSURE.
Examples would include the following:
– Liquid Filled lines above 2,500 PSI
– Positive displacement pump lines
– Gaseous filled above 200 PSI
• Compressed air lines for aerated mud systems
• Nitrogen/CO2 injection lines

Restraint System Guidelines for Temporary
Pressure Lines: Required Mitigation

Level 3
 Level 3 requires the use of a properly sized and engineered
restraint system (as per OEM specifications) along the entire
length of the pipeline and exclusion zones, if possible, to be
established or other mitigation plans developed to limit
personnel near the pipeline. Flexible lines are to be restrained
at each connection.
 Level 3 lines to be installed and inspected under a PTW due to
the high potential hazards.
