CONTENTS

Geometrical construction can be defined as the drawing of pane figures like circles, square,
quadrilaterals and blocks. This type of drawing is carried out using drawing instruments and materials. It
should be noted that in some cases, one will be required to indicate dimensions (measurements), which
must be done.

A Point: A point is used to indicate position. It is often represented by a dot or a cross. E.g.

ii. State the uses of the different types of lines.

CONTENTS

An angle: An angle is formed when two straight lines meet at a point. E.g.

Thick continuous line: This is the line used to for bringing out the

outline of any object drawn. It is for visible outline.


i) Thin continuous line: This line is used for construction, dimensioning.

projections and for hatching. It is generally faint.

(i) Thick long chain: It is used for cutting and viewing plane.

(v) Thin long chain: The thin long chain line is used as a centre line on plane figures.

(v) Thick wavy: This is a line that can be used as a boundary line or used it for short brakes.

(vi) Thin wavy: It is used for limits of partial view, especially on cylindrical rods.

(vii) Thin ruled with short zig-zag: This line can be used as long break to substitute for centre line.

(viii)Thin short dashes: This line is used to indicate hidden details.

(ix)Arrowheads: This type of line often used at the end of dimension lines

to indicate termination. E.g.

(i). Draw a horizontal line and mark off BC.

circle at F = 120".

iv). Join B to F produced.

(v). Along BF measure AB=45mm and cut an arc.

A circle can be defined as a plane figure bounded by a curved line called the

Circumference that is equidistant from the centre.

Properties of a Circle

(i). Diameter: This is a straight line drawn through the centre of a circle, meeting the circumference at
both ends.
(ii). Radius: This is a straight line drawn from the centre to the circumference.

(iii). An Arc: This is any part of the circumference.

(iv). Chord: This is any straight line drawn across the circle, meeting the Circumference at both ends.

(v). Tangent: A tangent is straight line which touches the circumference at a point.

Types of Quadrilaterals

(i). Parallelogram (Rhomboid): This is a quadrilateral with a pair of opposite

sides parallel and equal. E.g.

(ii). Square: This is a quadrilateral that has all sides and angle equal. The angle is

always at right angles. Eg.


(iii). Rhombus: This is a quadrilateral that has all ts sides equal. Its angles are

other than right angles. E.g

iv). Rectangle: A quadrilateral that has its opposite sides equal and all its angles

are right angles. Eg.

Five sides are called a Pentagon.

6-sided polygon = Hexagon,
