TracPhone V-IP Series Technical Training Study Guide

This study guide is a supplement to the eLearning course. It is not a substitute for that course,
nor does it supersede the information in the manuals.

KVH’s mini-VSAT Broadband service is a robust, high-capacity, global broadband satellite

network for maritime applications. The service is integrated with KVH’s TracPhone system to
equip vessels with optimized voice and data connections at download speeds reaching up to 4
Mbps.

1
TracPhone V-IP Series Study Guide

Geosynchronous Orbit
All mini-VSAT Broadband satellites loop around the Earth in a geosynchronous (GEO) orbit
22,300 miles above the Earth’s equator. Unlike satellites in other orbits, satellites in a GEO orbit
revolve around the Earth at the same speed as the Earth’s rate of rotation and maintain their
position relative to the Earth’s surface. Each GEO satellite appears as a fixed point in the sky at
a certain longitude.

2
TracPhone V-IP Series Study Guide

Linear Polarization
All mini-VSAT Broadband satellites transmit linearly polarized signals that consist of vertical and
horizontal electromagnetic waves, offset 90° from each other (aka “transverse” waves). These
waves are digitally modulated to carry information.

3
TracPhone V-IP Series Study Guide

Transponders
All mini-VSAT Broadband satellites use transponders to receive, amplify, and re-transmit signals
to/from the Earth. These transponders have the following bandwidths (frequency ranges):

Ku-band
Forward link (shore-to-ship download): 11.7-12.75 GHz

Return link (ship-to-shore upload): 14.0-14.5 GHz

C-band
Forward link (shore-to-ship download): 3.625-4.2 GHz

Return link (ship-to-shore upload): 5.85-6.425 GHz

Note: Only the TracPhone V11/V11-IP antenna can communicate with C-band satellites.

4
TracPhone V-IP Series Study Guide

Coverage Area
Each satellite transponder covers a specific area of the Earth. These “footprints” vary in size
and shape.

To communicate via the mini-VSAT Broadband service, the TracPhone antenna must be
located within the footprint of one of the satellites in the network.

While all TracPhone V-series antennas track satellites in the extensive Ku-band regions, only
the TracPhone V11/V11-IP can track C-band satellites as well for fully global coverage.

Important: The latest mini-VSAT Broadband global coverage footprint is available at

www.kvh.com/minivsatmap. This footprint is an amalgamation of all the individual satellites’
coverage areas in both Ku-band and C-band.

5
TracPhone V-IP Series Study Guide

Antenna Positioning
To communicate with the satellite, the antenna must be positioned as follows:

• It must be pointed at the satellite's location in the sky.

• Its RF feed assembly must match the orientation of the satellite's linearly polarized
waves (this is called the "skew").

When the vessel moves, the relative direction to the satellite and the orientation of the waves
changes. However, the TracPhone antenna automatically adjusts its position and skew to stay
locked on the satellite at all times.

6
TracPhone V-IP Series Study Guide

Line of Sight
To communicate with the satellite, the antenna must have an unobstructed view of the sky.
Anything that stands between the antenna and the satellite can block signals.

Common causes of blockage include the following:

• Buildings, bridges, or trees

• Other vessels docked alongside the customer’s vessel

• Onboard masts, antennas, or other structures

• Inclement weather conditions

7
TracPhone V-IP Series Study Guide

Network Organization
Each satellite in the mini-VSAT Broadband network is linked to one of the network’s land-based
hubs. Each hub is installed at a teleport (aka “Land Earth Station”) that provides the following
services:

• Establishes the gateway between the satellite network and the Internet

• Protects the network from outside intrusion

All hubs are controlled by a single Network Operations Center (NOC) that provides the following
services:

• Manages and optimizes the network

• Monitors the status of the network (24/7) and resolves any issues

Note: Although the teleport’s antenna is far less susceptible to blockage than mobile antennas,
it still requires a line of sight to the satellite. Therefore, severe weather at the hub’s location can
potentially cause a temporary service outage.

8
TracPhone V-IP Series Study Guide

Seamless Roaming
The high-traffic regions of the mini-VSAT Broadband global footprint is covered by more than
one satellite. The TracPhone system's integrated modem maintains a prioritized list of all
satellites in the network and selects the highest priority satellite that provides coverage at the
vessel's current GPS location. If the antenna is unable to track the chosen satellite for any
reason (due to a blockage condition, for example), the modem selects the next available
satellite on the list and the antenna automatically switches to that satellite.

In addition, as the vessel passes from one satellite’s coverage area to another, the antenna will
automatically switch to the highest priority satellite in the adjoining region to maintain the service
connection.

Note: The user will experience a brief interruption in service while the antenna switches
satellites.

CRMA Spread-Spectrum Technology

CRMA = Code Reuse Multiple Access

The mini-VSAT Broadband network uses this protocol. It has the following characteristics:

• Multiple vessels can transmit simultaneously.

• Vessels transmit data immediately in bursts, minimizing contention issues, transmission

delays, and network slowdowns.

• Return link transmissions are spread across a much wider frequency spectrum.

• Low power transmissions do not interfere with neighboring satellites, allowing a wider
beam and making a small dish size possible.

10
TracPhone V-IP Series Study Guide

PCMA Technology
PCMA = Paired Carrier Multiple Access

In addition to CRMA, the mini-VSAT Broadband network uses PCMA technology, which allows
the same satellite spectrum to be used for both the forward link and the return link, saving
bandwidth and cost.

TracPhone V-IP Series

TracPhone V-IP-series antenna systems provide the satellite link between the vessel and the
mini-VSAT Broadband service. The system consists of two main components:

• Antenna: Using its integrated GPS, advanced reflector technology, and gyro
stabilization, the antenna automatically locates and tracks the mini-VSAT Broadband
satellite, even in rough seas.

• Integrated CommBox Modem (ICM): The transceiver and "brain" of the system, the
ICM processes and routes all incoming and outgoing data traffic between the onboard
network and the satellite.

Note: Complete details about the TracPhone antenna are provided in the e-learning course for
each antenna model.

Installation
Mounting the ICM
Installation Guidelines
Before you start to install the ICM, you need to select a suitable mounting location. Consider the
following guidelines:

• Select a dry and well ventilated area away from any heat sources or salt spray.

• Ensure the front panel will be easily accessible to the user.

• Leave plenty of room at the rear panel to accommodate the cables with adequate
service loops.

• Select a location within 100 ft (30 m) of the antenna if you want to use the supplied data
cable. Order a longer length cable from KVH if a longer cable run is necessary.

• Ensure the location will provide adequate WiFi reception. Do not install the device in an
area surrounded by metal or near any electrical devices that emit RF noise.

Note: Establishing a wireless connection onboard a steel vessel might require a special WAP
and advanced networking expertise.

13
TracPhone V-IP Series Study Guide

Mounting Options
There are two options for mounting the ICM:

• Equipment rack: The ICM is sized to fit a standard 19" (48.26 cm) equipment rack,
occupying 2U of space.

• Horizontal surface: "L" brackets are supplied in the kitpack for mounting to a horizontal
surface.

14

18
TracPhone V-IP Series Study Guide

Connecting a NMEA Talker

Connect any NMEA 0183 talker to the 2-position terminal strip connector, as shown here. Then
plug the terminal strip connector into the back of the ICM.

Make sure the NMEA talker is configured to transmit any one (and just one) of the following
heading messages at 4800 baud:

• $--HDG

• $--HDM

• $--HDT

• $--OSD

• $--THS

• $--VHW

Also make sure the message includes the checksum, identifiable by a *xx field at the end of the
data sentence (for example, $HEHDT,123.4,T*1F). Do not exceed a 10 Hz input rate.

Important: The ICM cannot accept heading messages that conform to the NMEA 2000
standard.

19
TracPhone V-IP Series Study Guide

Optional Position Input

If desired, you can also provide a vessel position input to serve as a backup to the antenna's internal
GPS. The ICM can accept a $--RMC message from a NMEA 0183 talker.

To supply both heading and position to the ICM, you can either connect a NMEA 0183 talker that
transmits both messages, or connect two devices using a NMEA data multiplexer.

20

Connecting Power
Power Supply
The ICM is powered from the vessel's AC power supply. Generally, there are three options for
connecting AC power.

Single Phase AC Power

The ICM is designed to run on 3-wire single-phase AC power. Voltage between hot-neutral and
hot-ground should each measure between 100-240 VAC.

Two Phase Power with Leakage Current

The ICM will function normally, but a small amount of current will leak onto ship's ground.

Important: Get permission from the owner or ship's electrician before running the system on
two-phase power.

21
TracPhone V-IP Series Study Guide

Two Phase Power with Isolation Transformer

If the vessel is limited to two-phase power, and leakage current is unacceptable, install an
isolation transformer.

22
TracPhone V-IP Series Study Guide

Grounding
Warning: Failure to ground the ICM properly to ship's ground will cause an unsafe floating
ground condition, risking damage to the system and electric shock, potentially resulting in
DEATH!

Note: Complete details about connecting power and grounding the TracPhone antenna are
provided in the e-learning course for each antenna model.

Perform the following steps to properly ground the ICM.

1. Run a ground wire from the ICM rear panel to ship's ground.

2. Once all TracPhone system wiring is complete, plug the ICM power cable into vessel AC
power.

3. Before you turn on the system, measure the difference in potential between the ICM
chassis and ship's ground. Make sure it does not exceed 2 VAC and 2 VDC.

23

Perform the following steps to turn on the system:

1. Make sure the antenna has a clear, unobstructed view of the sky.

2. Apply vessel power to all system components.

3. Press the power button on the front of the ICM.

4. Wait five minutes for the system to initialize.

5. Turn on the network device(s).

Important: Before you turn on the system, make sure everyone above decks stays the
minimum safe distance away from the antenna to avoid RF radiation exposure.

24
TracPhone V-IP Series Study Guide

Startup Sequence
During startup, the system runs a self test routine then takes the following steps to connect to
the mini-VSAT Broadband service:

GPS Acquisition: During initialization, the antenna acquires a GPS fix and sends the vessel's
position to the ICM.

Satellite Selection: The ICM’s built-in modem identifies which service satellite the antenna
should track at the current location.

25
TracPhone V-IP Series Study Guide

Satellite Search: The antenna searches the sky for the selected satellite.

Satellite Tracking: When the antenna finds the satellite, it begins tracking it, even while the
vessel is in motion.

26
TracPhone V-IP Series Study Guide

Service Connection: The ICM’s modem connects to the hub via the satellite link and logs into
the mini-VSAT Broadband service. The system is now ready for use!

27

31
TracPhone V-IP Series Study Guide

No-Transmit Zones
The TracPhone antenna transmits radio frequency (RF) energy that is potentially harmful.
Therefore, the antenna should be mounted well above any areas accessible to passengers or
crew.

If mounting the antenna near an accessible area is unavoidable, you can configure up to two
no-transmit zones to prevent transmissions in hazardous directions. Whenever the antenna
points within a configured no-transmit zone, its transmitter will be inhibited.

Important: The RF radiation hazard area varies among antenna models, since each TracPhone
antenna has its own elevation range and transmitter power level. Complete details are provided
in the e-learning course for each antenna model

32
TracPhone V-IP Series Study Guide

Determining the Zone Ranges

To program a no-transmit zone in the system, you first need to determine the necessary
range(s) in degrees.

Azimuth Range
• Azimuths are relative to the antenna's Forward arrow, pointing toward the bow.

• Set the azimuths in clockwise order.

• Range must span at least 5 degrees.

33
TracPhone V-IP Series Study Guide

Elevation Range
• Only applies to TracPhone V7-IP and V11-IP. TracPhone V3-IP no-transmit zones are
limited to azimuth range only.

Voice Service Overview

How the Voice Service Works
Calls from the ship are routed as follows:

Step 1: The phone sends the phone number to the ICM as an analog signal.

Step 2: The ICM converts the signal into digital voice-over-IP (VoIP) data.

Step 3: The TracPhone antenna transmits the data over the mini-VSAT Broadband network to
an Internet-based SIP (session initiation protocol) server.

Step 4: The digital VoIP data is converted back into analog.

Step 5: The analog signal is routed via a proxy server to the appropriate public switched
telephone network (PSTN).

Step 6: The telephone network's carrier completes the call to ring the desired shore phone line.

41
TracPhone V-IP Series Study Guide

Connecting Phones
Connect the vessel's analog phone(s) or PABX to the"Voice Line" phone jacks on the ICM.

Customers may choose the country code and area code of the vessel phone number(s) during
activation. Line 1 is the main number.

Important: Only the TracPhone V7-IP and V11-IP offer the option of a second line (for an
additional monthly fee). The TracPhone V3-IP supports just a single line.

42
TracPhone V-IP Series Study Guide

Ship to Shore Calls

Placing a Call from the Vessel
Perform the following steps to place a call from the vessel:

1. Make sure the TracPhone system is online.

2. Pick up the handset on any phone connected to the ICM. You should hear a dial tone. If
you don't, check the phone line status on the web interface's Home tab.

3. Dial the phone number you wish to call.

Note: Remember, when you place a call, your voice travels to a satellite in space then back to
Earth. This transit will cause a delay (approximately 1/2 second) in your conversation.

Note: For information on call charges, refer to the rate sheets available at
www.kvh.com/mvbservice.

43
TracPhone V-IP Series Study Guide

Dialing Sequences
The dialing sequence you use to place a call depends on the vessel’s Line 1 phone number.

To call a number outside the country assigned to Line 1, dial:

<international prefix> +
<country code> +
<area code> +
<local phone number>

To call a number within the country assigned to Line 1, dial:

<area code> +
<local phone number>

To call a number within the country and area code assigned to Line 1, dial:
<local phone number>

44
TracPhone V-IP Series Study Guide

Shore to Ship Calls

Calls to the Vessel's Phone Number
People on shore who call the vessel are billed international and long-distance charges based on
the vessel’s phone number, and not on the location of the vessel. Therefore, when setting up
phone numbers during service activation, it is advisable for customers to select the same
country code and area/city code that they use at home (an additional fee will apply). This will
allow family, friends, and business associates in that region to call the vessel as an in-country
call.

In the example shown here, people in L.A. who call the vessel's U.S.-based phone number will
not be charged international fees.

45
TracPhone V-IP Series Study Guide

Calls to Virtual Numbers

For an additional fee, KVH offers customers the ability to assign up to five virtual phone
numbers to each vessel phone line. Each of these numbers can be set up with a different
country code and area/city code, allowing people within those regions to avoid international or
long-distance charges when they call the vessel.

In the example shown here, the customer's company has offices in Tokyo and Melbourne.
Therefore, they set up Japanese and Australian virtual numbers so that their employees can call
the vessel without running up an international phone bill.

To set up virtual numbers, customers need to call KVH’s Airtime Services Department.

46

Customers can easily access all of these features from the main "My Information" page.

48
TracPhone V-IP Series Study Guide

Optional VoIP Accessories

Additional MTA(s)
If the vessel requires more than two phone lines, you may install one or two multimedia terminal
adapters (MTAs) to enable up to four additional lines. This allows the system to sustain three or
more simultaneous calls.

An additional monthly fee applies to each additional line. In addition, the customer's service plan
must accommodate the minimum data rate required (bidirectional) to support these additional
lines:

• 1 or 2 phone lines - 128 kbps

• 3 or 4 phone lines - 256 kbps

• 5 or 6 phone lines - 512 kbps

Note: Only lines 1 and 2 are prioritized over general data traffic.

Important: Only the TracPhone V7-IP and V11-IP support multiple phone lines. Additional
MTAs cannot be used with a TracPhone V3-IP.

49
TracPhone V-IP Series Study Guide

Crew Calling
KVH's crew calling service allows crew and charter passengers to place ship-to-shore calls
using prepaid calling cards. KVH tracks crew usage separately from the ship's standard phone
service. There are two options:

• Install the Crew Calling Gateway - Connect the Gateway to one of the ICM's User
Ethernet ports.

• Enable crew calling service on an existing voice line - Contact KVH Network Services
(networkservices@kvh.com) for details.

Important: Crew calling service is only available for TracPhone V7-IP and V11-IP systems.

UCH-250 Fax Server

Faxing over VoIP can be unreliable (normally an 80% success rate). Glitches like latency,
packet loss, and jitter, common with any VoIP connection, can interrupt the synchronization
necessary for fax communications. The optional UCH-250 Fax Server overcomes these
limitations and offers the following benefits:

• Dedicated fax line

• Reliability of a fully managed, store–and–forward system

• Compatibility with any G3 fax machine

Note: An additional monthly service fee applies.

Standard DHCP Configuration

How Data Is Routed
When an onboard computer is connected to the mini-VSAT Broadband service, it transfers data
packets to and from the Internet whenever you access a web page, send an e-mail, or transfer a
file. Let's take a look at how all of this data is routed over the mini-VSAT Broadband network.

Step 1: When you turn on the TracPhone system, the ICM acts like a router and automatically
assigns IP addresses to all connected computers and other devices. This assignment of IP
addresses is referred to as DHCP addressing.

Step 2: The ICM also assigns a default gateway and a DNS server to each device on its
network. The gateway is simply the IP address of the ICM, through which all network devices
will connect to the Internet. You will learn more about the DNS server a little later.

Step 3: The ICM connects all devices on the LAN to the mini-VSAT Broadband service using
the ICM’s satellite IP address. The hub on shore connects all currently online subscribers to the
Internet using the hub’s public IP address.

Step 4: When you enter a URL into the web browser of any network device onboard, the
request is sent to the ICM as a data packet. The TracPhone antenna then transmits this data
over the satellite link to the hub. The hub then routes this data to the assigned DNS server on
the Internet.

Step 5: The DNS server translates the requested URL's domain name to its corresponding IP
address and sends this IP address back to the onboard computer.

Step 6: The onboard computer now sends its website request directly to the IP address that the
DNS server provided.

Step 7: Finally, the web server at the destination IP address delivers the requested web page to
the onboard computer via the proper IP addresses.

Network Terminology
LAN: A Local Area Network (LAN) is a small group of computers and devices linked together
within close proximity to each other (for example, on a vessel). LAN is the opposite of WAN
(Wide Area Network), which is a group of computers, devices, and possibly LANs, linked
together over a large geographic area.

MAC Address: A Media Access Control (MAC) address is a unique, non-changeable hardware
identifier assigned to every device that can connect to a network (stored on the device’s network
interface card (NIC)). MAC addresses do not provide any hierarchy information. This means
that, unlike an IP address, there is no way to determine from a MAC address what network the
device belongs to.

IP Address: An IP address is a unique identifier assigned to a single computer or device on a

network. It consists of four eight-bit binary numbers, represented in decimal form (0-255). Every
device accessible on the Internet is identified by its IP address.

Firewall: A firewall is hardware and/or software that protects a network from unauthorized
access or hacking.

DHCP Server: A Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) server automatically assigns
local IP addresses to computers and devices that are connected to its network. The server
maintains a database of MAC addresses and their assigned IP addresses. IP addresses are
"leased" – they are reissued whenever the server-host connection is reset.

Domain Name: The domain name is part of a Uniform Resource Locator (URL), which is the
address of a web page or file on the Internet.

A URL consists of three parts:

Protocol
(e.g., http://www.kvh.com/mvbservice)

IP address or domain name

(e.g., http://www.kvh.com/mvbservice)

Name of the web page or file to be retrieved from that address

(e.g., http://www.kvh.com/mvbservice)

DNS Server: A Domain Name Service (DNS) server translates domain names (for example,
www.kvh.com) into their corresponding IP addresses (for example, 69.25.69.23).

Web Server: A web server delivers web pages that are accessible over the Internet via a public
IP address. The web server delivers its index.html page to host computers that send a request
to its domain name.

Gateway: A gateway is the IP address of the router that links networked devices to the Internet.

Configuring a Device for DHCP

Each network device or computer needs to be configured for DHCP addressing in order to
receive an IP address from the ICM.

The location of this configuration setting on a computer varies slightly by operating system. On a
Windows PC, make sure its IP properties are set to obtain both an IP address and a DNS server
address automatically. On a Mac, make sure its network properties are set to use DHCP.

55
TracPhone V-IP Series Study Guide

Wired DHCP Connections

In a standard configuration, you can connect the vessel's network devices to any of the four
"User Ethernet" ports on the rear panel of the ICM.

To ensure proper performance, use a straight-through, CAT5 (or better), Ethernet cable with
RJ45 connectors to connect each device to the ICM. These cable properties are described
below:

• Straight-through: The pins at one end of the cable match the pins at the other end; not
to be confused with crossover cables.

• CAT5 (Category 5): Standard that supports a maximum data rate of 1,000 Mbps (higher
categories support faster data rates).

• RJ45 connectors: Comprised of eight wires; similar in appearance to a standard RJ11

telephone connector.

Note: When you connect an Ethernet cable, the port's link light will illuminate to indicate good
communications.

56

57
TracPhone V-IP Series Study Guide

ICM Built-in Wi-Fi

You can also connect the vessel's network devices to the ICM via its built-in wireless access
point (WAP).

Important: The range of the ICM's WAP will depend on the layout and structure of the vessel.
For example, wireless signals degrade when passing through bulkheads and near metal
masses. If you're installing the system on a steel vessel, you might need a special external WAP
and advanced networking expertise.

58

Static IP Configuration
Benefits of Static IP Service
In a standard DHCP configuration, onboard network devices are not visible to the Internet
because they do not have their own public IP addresses. Therefore, they cannot be accessed
remotely from shore.

In a static IP configuration, a vessel network device has a public IP address that can be
accessed directly from the Internet. This setup has the following key advantages for commercial
ships:

• Enables remote monitoring and IT management from shore

• Allows a vessel computer to access a secure VPN (virtual private network)

61
TracPhone V-IP Series Study Guide

How Static IP Works

When you configure a network device for static IP, it does not receive a dynamic IP address
from the ICM. Instead, it retains an IP address that never changes. And the ICM maintains a
separate local network and gateway to route data to and from the device.

The hub links the device's static IP address to a preset public IP address on the Internet. This is
referred to as network address translation (NAT).

Data can be transferred in both directions between the vessel and shore across this static IP
channel.

62
TracPhone V-IP Series Study Guide

Configuring a Device for Static IP

Customers request static IP service by filling out the online form available at
www.kvh.com/staticip. (An additional monthly fee will apply.) The TracPhone system must be
activated for mini-VSAT Broadband service and it must remain online throughout the 24-hour
setup period.

When the customer receives an e-mail from KVH confirming that the static IP address has been
set up, the desired network device can be configured with the static IP data provided in the e-
mail.

63
TracPhone V-IP Series Study Guide

Static IP Connections
Only the "User Ethernet 4" port on the ICM can be used to connect static IP devices. Ports 1, 2,
and 3 remain configured for DHCP addressing.

Important: Static IP provides an open, unprotected connection to the Internet. Therefore, you
should only assign a static IP address to a secure device, such as a firewall router.

Dual Dome Configuration

Configuring the ICM for Dual Dome
You can install a second TracPhone system as a backup. In this dual dome configuration,
whenever the primary system loses its connection to the mini-VSAT Broadband service (for
example, when its view of the satellite becomes blocked), all voice and data traffic automatically
gets routed to the secondary system.

The Ethernet ports of each ICM must be configured to support a dual dome installation. At the
primary ICM's web interface, select the Dual Dome-Primary configuration. At the secondary
ICM's web interface, select Dual Dome-Secondary.

Important: Contact KVH Technical Support before you configure the secondary ICM. KVH will
need to modify a setting over the air.

74
TracPhone V-IP Series Study Guide

CommBox Hub
The Enterprise Bundle requires the integration of a CommBox hub (not to be confused with the
mini-VSAT Broadband hub). There are two options:

• KVH-hosted hub

• Private hub

A private CommBox hub, installed at the customer's premises, is a secure VPN communications
point that interfaces fleet vessels with the customer's corporate network. With this hub in place,
the customer has direct access to any vessel's LAN without the need for a static IP address.

From the CommBox hub, the customer can also run detailed network traffic reports on individual
vessels or the entire fleet. The hub also logs all e-mail and file transfers.

Least Cost Routing

A good example of the least cost routing feature is KVH's TracPhone/Iridium Bundle. In this
configuration, an Iridium Pilot system is connected to the TracPhone system's ICM. Whenever
the mini-VSAT Broadband service is unavailable, the CommBox controller automatically
switches to the Iridium service.

81
TracPhone V-IP Series Study Guide

Setup of CommBox Services

Designed primarily for commercial/fleet applications, CommBox services are highly
configurable, and their setup is often very complex. Therefore, all CommBox services must be
configured by KVH as a professional service.

Customers interested in a CommBox solution should contact KVH at networkservices@kvh.com

for a consultation. KVH will coordinate directly with the customer to select, install, and configure
the appropriate CommBox bundle to meet their needs. In most cases, setup can be done over
the air via the vessel's mini-VSAT Broadband connection.

82

Minimizing Data Usage

Avoiding Background Traffic
The configurations of operating systems, web browsers, and applications generally assume an
unlimited, always-on broadband connection. As such, they will often try to connect to the
Internet on their own to download updates and transfer files. They will also operate without any
regard to the amount of traffic they generate to perform routine tasks.

To eliminate unnecessary background activity and minimize the amount of data consumed,
customers should follow the guidelines provided in Tips for Minimizing Data Usage, one of the
topics available in the ICM's Help (see topic under Data Connections at
www.kvh.com/v7ipicmhelp).

Important: The customer is responsible for all data transferred to/from the vessel, including
inadvertent downloads by applications running in the background.

85
TracPhone V-IP Series Study Guide

Local Web Caching

A web cache resides on the ICM that temporarily stores the content of web pages the user
visits, so they will load faster on subsequent visits.

The local web cache should stay enabled to save bandwidth and ensure the best possible web
browsing experience. However, if you suspect it is preventing a website from loading properly,
you may disable it:

1. At the web interface, click the Settings tab. Then click Network Settings.

2. In Cache Settings, click Edit.

3. If the Login window appears, log in with the administrator password.

4. Select Disabled.

5. Click Save.

6. At the confirmation message, click Save.

Note: If an optional CommBox bundle is enabled, or the ICM is configured for Dual Dome-
Secondary or Legacy mode, the Network Settings page will not contain any configurable fields.

86

Data Usage Alerts

At the myKVH mini-VSAT Manager (www.mykvh.com), the customer can set up automatic email
and/or SMS text message alerts to notify when the vessel's data usage reaches certain
thresholds. Alerts can be sent when the vessel has consumed a certain percentage of its
monthly allowance and/or when usage exceeds that allowance by a certain amount.

Troubleshooting
All KVH-certified technicians need to know how to quickly resolve problems that might arise in
the field. In addition, every service visit should include a check of the system's software to
ensure it is running the latest version.

Initial Steps for Troubleshooting Any Problem

Perform the following initial steps to troubleshoot any type of system problem:

1. Check the status information on the web interface or ICM front panel for any error
messages or abnormal conditions.

2. If the antenna cannot find the satellite, check for blockage around the antenna and
ensure the vessel is located within the mini-VSAT Broadband coverage area (refer to
www.kvh.com/minivsatmap).

3. Try to connect to the KVH test page (test.minivsat.net). If you can, but you can’t access
the Internet, contact KVH Technical Support. The account might not be activated.

4. Ensure all system components are powered up and wired properly.

5. Restart the system.

106

If you need to restart the built-in modem, turn off the ICM at the front panel then turn it back on.

107
TracPhone V-IP Series Study Guide

Troubleshooting a Voice Problem

Perform the following steps if you can access the Internet but cannot make a voice call:

1. Check the basics - perform the initial steps for any problem.

2. Check the phone number. Make sure you’re dialing the appropriate international prefix
and country code, if necessary (see the Voice Connections lesson for details).

3. Check the My Phone status on the web interface. If it shows “Unable to Register Voice
Service,” contact KVH Technical Support. There might be an account issue.

4. Restart the MTA.

5. Dial ***1 on the phone. You should hear the MTA’s IP address. If you hear "0.0.0.0," the
MTA has not received an IP address. Contact KVH Technical Support.

6. Check the phone’s connection to the ICM.

7. Replace the phone.

108

Updating System Software

There are four methods to choose from to update the ICM/Antenna software.

Over the Air

If the TracPhone system is online, you can download the latest software from KVH's web server
via the mini-VSAT Broadband connection (airtime charges will apply).

At the Updates tab of the ICM's web interface, click Check Now. If an update is available, click
Download and Install to apply the update.

Satellite Config File Updates

Satellite Configuration Files
The SSCF and SED configuration files stored in the ICM's built-in modem contain all of the
satellite parameters the TracPhone system needs to find and track satellites for mini-VSAT
Broadband service. These files need to be updated whenever changes are made to the satellite
network.

In most cases, the modem will download the latest files automatically via the satellite link.
However, if a TracPhone system does not operate within the mini-VSAT Broadband coverage
area during the download period, its modem will miss the update. (For example, the system
might have been boxed up in stock, or the system might have been shut down for the off-
season.) In such cases, the modem needs to be updated manually, as explained on the next
page.

You can download the latest SSCF and SED files from the KVH Partner Portal.

Important: Check with KVH Technical Support before you update a customer’s modem with the
standard configuration files. Many customers have unique coverage needs that require custom
files.

To manually upload new SSCF and SED files from your PC to the ICM's built-in modem,
perform the following steps:

On the Support page of the ICM's web interface, click Click here for more details to access
the built-in modem's web interface.

Upload the files through the modem's Satellite Configuration page. (You will need to log in with
User: admin and Password: arclight.)
