LESSON PLAN IN SCIENCE 4

LEE MARTIN RICAMARA

I. OBJECTIVES

 Identify and understand the different types of soil.

 Compare and contrast the characteristics of different types of soil.
 Examine properties of soils, including color and texture, capacity to retain
water, and ability to support the growth of plants.

D. Science Concept
Soil is a natural resource that can be categorized into different soil types,
each with distinct characteristics that provide growing benefits and limitations.
Soil can be categorized into sand, clay, silt, peat, chalk and loam types of soil
based on the dominating size of the particles within a soil.

E. Process Skills
Observing, Identifying, Differentiating

III. PROCEDURE
5 E’s INSTRUCTIONAL MODEL
ENGAGE  The teacher will share his screen and play a Youtube video
(Link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QtwMIIRX8TM).

 The teacher will ask questions after showing the video.

1. What is a soil?
2. What are the types of soil?
3. Do you think soil is important? Why?
4. What are the characteristics of each of the soil?
EXPLORE  The teacher will introduce an activity, then he will set the
standards to be followed in doing the activity.
 The students will be assigned to get and take a picture a
soil that they can find in their house. They will use a
magnifying glass to get a closer look on the type of soil they
found. They will record what they have observed.
 The teacher will ask some students to share some
observation and thoughts about the soil they found.
EXPLAIN  The teacher will use a Power Point Presentation to discuss
the types of soil and explain to the students how they
explore the different types of soil in their activity.
Discussion:
Soil is a natural resource that can be categorized into
different soil types, each with distinct characteristics that
provide growing benefits and limitations.
o Sandy soil
Sandy Soil is light, warm, dry and tends to be acidic and
low in nutrients. Sandy soils are often known as light soils
due to their high proportion of sand and little clay (clay
weighs more than sand).

These soils have quick water drainage and are easy to

work with. They are quicker to warm up in spring than clay
soils but tend to dry out in summer and suffer from low
nutrients that are washed away by rain.

The addition of organic matter can help give plants an

additional boost of nutrients by improving the nutrient and
water holding capacity of the soil.

o Clay Soil
Clay Soil is a heavy soil type that benefits from high
nutrients. Clay soils remain wet and cold in winter and dry
out in summer.

These soils are made of over 25 percent clay, and because

of the spaces found between clay particles, clay soils hold
a high amount of water.

Because these soils drain slowly and take longer to warm

up in summer, combined with drying out and cracking in
summer, they can often test gardeners.

o Loam Soil
Loam soil is a mixture of sand, silt and clay that are
combined to avoid the negative effects of each type.

These soils are fertile, easy to work with and provide good
drainage. Depending on their predominant composition
they can be either sandy or clay loam.

As the soils are a perfect balance of soil particles, they are

considered to be a gardener’s best friend, but still benefit
from topping up with additional organic matter.

 The teacher will make the discussion engaging by asking

questions.

ELABORATE  The students will compare and contrast the characteristics

of the different types of soil by constructing a diagram.
EVALUATE  The students will be given a google form link to be
answered as a short evaluation. They will examine the
properties of soil that they found in their house, including
the soil’s color and texture, capacity to retain water, and
ability to support the growth of plants.
