INTRODUCTION

Using techniques like evaporation, distillation, filtration, and chromatography, which employ variations
in the components of a mixture's physical qualities to separate them, mixtures can be physically separated. The
type of combination, the states of matter present, and the physical characteristics of the constituents all influence
the separation technique employed to try to separate the mixture (Wacowich-Sgarbi, z.d.).

GENERAL DIRECTIONS: Prepare the needed materials below. Make sure to follow the procedures given.
Don’t forget to document your work by taking pictures or video (you will be needing it in your laboratory report.)

FOR EVAPORATION:

Materials:
Heat from the fire. Frying Fan/Casserole 1 cup of Water2 tablespoon of Salt

PROCEDURE:

● Put the frying pan or Casserole in the source of heat (Gas stove) with low heat. Add 1 cup of water to the
casserole or pan, then mix 2 tablespoon of salt, make sure the salt is dissolved properly. Let the Salt
solution boil for at least 20minutes. Record your observation.

FOR DECANTATION:

Materials

Two disposable cups/drinking cups ½ cup water ½ cup cooking oil Stick or spoon for stirring

Procedure:
● In one drinking cup, mix ½ cup water and ½ cup oil. Stir well and let it rest for at least a minute. After a
minute, what happened to your oil-water mixture? Separate the mixture by slowly transferring the
substance to the other cup. Make sure to separate them well.

FOR FILTRATION:

Materials:
Cheese cloth/cloth Colander (Patiktikan) Rocks Sand

Soil 2 Small container water

Procedures:

● In the small container, put the water, rocks, sand and soil and mix it thoroughly. Using the strainer, filter
the materials and observe what happened to the water and the mixture. Second, get the cloth/cheese cloth,
and filter the materials for the second time. Observe what happened again to the water and the mixture.
