“Fun” or “Funny”

Fun is usually used to talk about things that you do or experience


1. Playing soccer is fun. (the action of playing soccer)
2. We had fun at the carnival. (the things you did at the carnival)

3. The birthday party was a lot of fun. (the things that you did at the party)

Funny is used when it makes you laugh or to talk about things that you see or hear

1. The movie was very funny. (I saw it.)


2. My English teacher is funny. (I hear and see her in class.)

3. The joke she told me was very funny. (I heard it.)

Other examples:

 When we talk about doing as activity, we say that it is fun because it is something
you do. (If you laugh when you do the activity, you say it is funny.)
 When we talk about a comic movie or play, we say that it is funny because you
watch it AND it makes you laugh.
 When we watch a sports event (soccer game, tennis match, etc.), we say that it’s
fun because you don’t laugh when you watch it. (This is an exception to the
do/see rule.)

Funny can also mean “strange or different than usual


The new cake tasted funny.

When he is doing drugs he acts funny.

There was something funny about the car he brought home. It had no doors!
