i) Coordinate measuring machine

Aim: To understand the measurement of small parts using Coordinate measuring

machine (CMM)

Equipment Name: Spectra CMM

Make: Accurate

Introduction:

Spectra is an entry level machine with power packed features for 3D measurement of small
parts. Designed for ease of operation and safety ensuring optimum performance.
Features:
 Elevated Bridge
 All granite construction for measuring axis manual operation
 Increased protection for measuring guides.
 Choice for various probing system.

Operating Procedure:

1. Start the air compressor and let the pressure be developed up to at least 6 bar
2. Check the required air pressure of 6 bar is available at machine. Then switch on the
air dryer, so that the moisture from the air is removed. The guidance system in CMM
is Air bearings only, therefore the air should be completely free from moisture for
smooth working
3. Turn on the knob which supplies the moisture free air to CMM
4. Fix the required probe in the magnetic probe arm of the machine and switch on the
computer
5. Open the software Tangram in the computer
6. The first step is to calibrate the probe which is attached in the magnetic probe arm
7. For this the measurements are to be taken on a standard sphere which is supplied by
the Accurate Company. After 3 to 4 readings are taken, it is ensured that the set probe
is calculated
8. Then the actual measurements can now be taken using the probe. The probe can
move in X, Y and Z directions to measure the points. The movements in X, Y and Z
are controlled using a Joystick
9. The Tangram software provides good GUI and various information during
measuring of any geometric features like radius of a circle, length of a surface etc.
(For e.g. how many points are required to measure radius of a circle etc.)
10. Once the coordinates are noted by the probe, the values of measured features can be
seen through software
11. One can generate a report also in MS-Excel, PDF etc. of all the measured features
ii) Optical measuring microscope

Aim: To understand the working of Optical measuring microscope

Equipment Name: STM6-LM

Make: Olympus

Introduction:

The STM6-LM microscopes equipping a 250 x 150 mm stage offer excellent versatility and
high performance three axis measurements of parts and electrical components, with sub-
micron precision. Low magnification option makes this ideal for toolmakers.

Operating Procedure:

Optical microscope is used to study various microstructures of etched specimens, welded

specimens etc.
In this practical a welded specimen is studied under microscope. Various eye pieces of
different magnification levels were understood. The functioning of eye piece equipped with
cross hair adjustments is also studied.
The system was connected serially with a computer, so that the same view can be seen on
the monitor for better understanding
