(1) It was found during service that the outer races of some of the spherical bearing assemblies

were rotating inside the bearing housings of the retraction actuator piston rods. This problem

was due to the failure of the swaging and staking method used to retain the spherical bearing
assemblies.

(2) After carrying out tests into more reliable methods of retention Messier-Hispano-Bugatti test

report indicated that spherical bearing assemblies retained by swaging and ’Redux’ was found

to be more reliable than swaging and staking.

(3) The accomplishment of this Service Bulletin is recommended at earliest opportunity and not

(1) Thoroughly clean the swaged area of the spherical bearing housing and the eye end of the

piston rod with a non-metallic instrument and suitable solvents.

(2) Refer to Figure 1 and apply ‘Redux 408’ to the chamfer to cover the swaged area of the

spherical bearing outer race in accordance with the manufacturers instructions around the entire

circumference of the bearing. Apply this process to both sides of the spherical bearing outer
race.

B. Method of Identification

(1) When the unit has been modified and inspected, reidentify the retraction actuator by erasing the
