Introduction

• Windows 98 is a 32 bit operating system offering high

performance and robustness.

• Windows 98 provides client software that enables computers

to access other types of networks, including NetWare and

Windows NT.

• It enables any computer running Windows 98 to share

resources with other computers running Windows 98.

Arranging the icons

• To align icons in the center of the grid cells, right-click the

Desktop and then click Line up Icons. This enables you to

place the icons in different parts of the desktop and still have

them look orderly when you are finished.

• To arrange the icons in one of four predefined orders, click

Arrange Icons and then choose by Name, by Type, by Size, or

by Date.

Changing the icon title text font and size

• Step 1

– Right-click the desktop. Check Auto Arrange on. Right-click the

desktop. Click Properties. Click the Appearance tab.

• Step 2

– Click the drop down arrow in the item field to open the drop-down

list of desktop items.

• Step 3
– Click Icon Titles. The Font and Size fields can be changed. So can
the Bold and Italic buttons.

• Step 4
– Click the Apply button when you have chosen a font, point size,
and so on, to see the effect of the choices. Keep adjusting these
values until you are pleased with the results

• Step 5
– When you are done, click OK.

Hiding the Taskbar

• The Taskbar has two mode switches:


– Always on Top or not
– Auto hide or not
• Step1
– Right click on Task bar –properties.

Moving the Taskbar

• The Taskbar doesn't have to be on the bottom of your desktop.


• You can move it to any other edge (top, bottom, left, or right
side of screen).

Properties of a Hard Disk Drive

• You can change the a hard disk's volume label, as well as disk
cleanup
• You can also check it for errors, back it up, or defragment it by
clicking the Tools tab on the properties sheet.

Windows Explorer

• The Windows 98 Explorer is the hierarchical file cabinet or


outline view of My Computer.

• It is a tool for understanding the file and folder structure the


computer.

• It can be used to move, copy, rename, compress, view, and


delete files and folders on your computer and on the network.

• It is a two-paned view of a folder window.

• The Explorer shows both a tree view and a folder (directory)


view.

Creating New Folders

• Step 1
– Right-click the My Computer Icon on the desktop. Click Explore.
• Step 2
– Expand the folder tree in the left pane of the Explorer window until
you see the folder icon where you will place your new folder. Click
this folder's name.
• Step 3
– Right-click the client area of the Explorer window in the right
pane-Click New and then click Folder.
• Step 4
– A new folder icon appears in the right pane. Its name is
highlighted. Type in an appropriate name for the folder and press
Enter.

Copying and Moving Files and Folders

• Step1
– Start the explorer.

• Step2
– Select the folder which you want to cut/copy. You can select
multiple folders only in the right panel.now go to edit menu and
click cut/copy.

• Step3
– Select the folder or create a folder into which you want to paste
now select the edit menu and click paste

Creating a Shortcut

• Step 1

– In the explorer, select the folder or file of which you want to make

shortcut.

• Step 2

– Drag the folder or file out of the explorer on the desktop. Note

while making a shortcut of the file through the same method hold

ctrl key and perform the task.

Deleting a Shortcut

• Step 1
– Right-click the folder or file
icon on the desktop
• Step 2
– Click Delete on the right
mouse button menu.
• Step 3
– A message box appears
asking if you are sure that
you want to delete the
Shortcut. Click Yes.

Copy, Label, Format, Make a system disk

• Windows Explorer lets you do a disk copy.

• You can change the label of a disk drive, including a hard disk

drive.

• You can format a diskette (or hard drive) and create a system

diskette.

• The disk-copy a diskette in the Explorer, right-click the diskette

icon and select Copy Disk from the right mouse button menu.

• To label a drive or diskette, right-click the drive icon, click


Properties, and then type in the new label.

• To format a drive, right-click the drive icon, and click Format.

• To make a system disk or diskette, right click the drive icon


and click "Format." If you want to format the diskette and make
it bootable, click "Full" and "Copy system files" in the Other
Options box (see fig.). If the is already formatted, click "Copy
system files only" and click Start.

Start Button Menu

• Programs
It is a folder that contains applications and Windows 98 comes
with a default setup of applications and accessory programs
that get installed in the Programs folder/menu.
• Favorites
It contains shortcuts or links to Web Sites one has added to
the Favorites folder.
• Documents
It contains last 15 documents that one started by double-
clicking in an Explorer or folder window.
• Settings
It contains shortcuts to Control Panel, Printers and Taskbar
and Start Menu Properties, Folder Options and Active Desktop
options and Windows Update.

• Find
You can choose between finding a computer and finding files
or folders.
• Help
The Start menu Help command gets you to the unified help for
all of Windows 98.
• Run
This is a command line interface for executing any Windows
programs, opening folders or Web sites.
• Logoff Username
It lets you close all programs and log on as different user.
• Shutdown
It provides Standby, Shut down, Restart and Restart in MS-
DOS mode.

• The last 15 documents that


you started by double-

• Click the Start button, and choose Find from the Start button
menu and then click to find files and folders.

The Recycle Bin

• The Recycle Bin will store the files (and shortcuts, which are stored
as files) that you have deleted from your local hard disks using the
Explorer or a folder window.
• The deleted files will remain in the Recycle Bin until you choose the
Empty Recycle Bin option.
• You may decide to restore a file and it will be returned to its original
folder, even it that folder was previously deleted.
• The folder will be restored simultaneously.
• One can delete files without sending them to the Recycle Bin by
highlighting the filenames, holding down the Shift key, and pressing
the Delete key.

The Control Panel Icons

• Add/remove programs
The Add/remove Programs Control Panel gives you three
functions:
– Installing and removing programs that utilize the Windows 95
version of Install Shield.

– Installing or removing programs that are covered by the Windows


98 setup routines or that have inf files consistent with the
Microsoft standard for install files.

– Creating a bootable startup diskette.
