Tortoise Keychain

UK Terms

Materials:

Stylecraft Stone 1710 – 3g


Stylecraft Pistachio 1822 – 3g
Hayfield Bonus Black 0965 – Oddment for Eyes

Keychain
Hi-Loft Quality Toy Stuffing
3mm Crochet Hook
Wool Needle (for sewing)
Abbreviations:

ch – chain
dc – double crochet
htr – half treble crochet
inc – 2 stitches into next stitch
dec – decrease over next two stitches in front loops only
BLO – back loop only
FLO – front loop only
sl st – slip stitch
f/o – fasten off by slip stitch in next stitch

Note:

Unless stated work in continuous rounds marking last stitch of each row with a stitch
marker before proceeding with the next.

When stuffing parts make sure that you don’t overstuff them as you don’t want the stuffing
to show through when complete.
Each part should be filled just enough that it can be easily squeezed when pinched firmly.

Shell:

Using Stone
Row 1: ch 2, dc 6 into 2nd st from hook (alternatively dc 6 sts into magic ring) (6)
Row 2: inc x6 (12)
Row 3: (dc into next st, inc) x6 (18)
Row 4: dc (18)
Row 5: (dc into next 5 sts, inc) x3 (21)
Row 6: dc (21) sl st into next st
Row 7: FLO row, (ch 2, sl st into next st) x21 (21 ch loops)

F/O leaving a 20cm end.

Weave end up through the shell, to just above the FLO line to hide the end, then thread
straight up through the starting circle.
DO NOT CUT AS NEED TO SECURE KEYCHAIN

Head:

Using Pistachio
Row 1: ch 2, dc 7 into 2nd st from hook (alternatively dc 7 sts into magic ring) (7)
Rows 2 – 3: dc (7) (2 rows)
Stuff head lightly
Row 4: (dec) x3, dc into next st (4)
Row 5: fold flat and dc through both layers (2)

F/O leaving a short end.


Body:

Using Pistachio
Row 1: BLO row, sl st into st to right of previous F/O, dc into next 2 sts, ch 3, htr into 2 nd st
from hook, htr into next st, sl st into side of previous dc, dc into next 3 sts, ch 3, htr into 2 nd
st from hook, htr into next st, sl st into side of previous dc, dec, dc into next st, lay head
across the next 2 sts, right side facing away from you, and dc into the next 2 sts (through
both layers catching in the end as you go), dc into next st, dec, ch 3, htr into 2 nd st from
hook, htr into next st, sl st into side of previous dc, dc into next 3 sts, ch 3, htr into 2 nd st
from hook, htr into next st, sl st into side of previous dc, dc into the next 2 sts, dec, ch 2,
htr into 2nd ch from hook, sl st into side of previous dec, dc into next st (18)
Row 2: (dc into next st, dec) x 6 (the limbs should sit in the middle of each dec and need
to be pushed down and out of the way in order to complete the st) (12)
Stuff body and shell
Row 3: dec x6 (6)

F/O leaving a 15cm end.

Thread end through the 6 sts at the base of body and pull to close opening.
Secure with a couple of small sts.
Weave end through body and cut.

Using 20cm end from shell, and making sure not to pull it out of shape, do several small
back sts to secure keychain to top of shell.
Weave ends through body and cut.

Eyes:

Using Black sew the eyes onto either side of face, 2 rows back from starting circle, using
small back sts.
Weave all the ends through the head and cut flush.
