In this unit plan for the Additional English language elective course, students will learn about
environmental consciousness and sustainable practices.

The unit consists of 5 lessons: "From Trash to Treasure," "Surrounded by Trees with Some
Flowers to Smell," "Lying in Your Garbage," "Plogging ‐ Make Yourself and the Planet Better,"
and "The Problem with Fast Fashion”.

Target Group: The 9th graders

Level: Intermediate

Duration of the course: 5 weeks, one lesson per week. Each lesson takes 45 minutes.

The student's prior knowledge of environmental issues has been reinforced and expanded in
their previous classes and modules. They have studied ecological topics in Geography and
English language curriculums since the 5th grade. Moreover, they have engaged in short-term
projects related to environmental awareness, such as creating posters, leaflets, and exhibitions
promoting the concept of waste management (Renew, Reuse, Recycle, Renew, and Redesign).

The course aims to encourage eco-friendly habits and responsible behavior by promoting
sustainable lifestyles. The pedagogy principles used in this course include research-based
strategies, critical thinking skills, and collaborative learning. The students will be engaged in
group activities, discussions, and projects, fostering social learning and effective collaboration.

The course outcomes include the ability to differentiate between upcycling and recycling,
discuss the benefits of spending time in nature, propose practical ways to lead a zero-waste
lifestyle, brainstorm solutions for waste management through plogging, analyze the impact of the
fast fashion industry, and demonstrate improved language skills through active participation in
environmental discussions. To assess students' understanding, various methods will be used,
such as presentations, Padlet reflections, online quizzes, and Flip grid video discussions.

The course design includes warm-up activities, interactive discussions, and exit ticket activities
to maintain students' motivation and engagement.

The course will be evaluated through discussion forums, self-assessment quizzes, peer review
activities, and teacher feedback. Completion rates and badge achievements will also be
considered to gauge student engagement and participation.

Overall, this unit plan aims to instill environmental awareness and sustainable practices among
students, empowering them to make a positive impact on the planet and their communities.
