Detector Maintenance
Before performing any of the following operations, make sure that the power to the
detector is switched OFF.
Calibration
To have the best image performance, the raw image data generated by the detector
should be corrected at the host by using a flat field (offset and gain) correction. As the
offset (dark) calibration signal depends (amongst others) on ambient temperature
conditions of the detector, it is commonly accepted good practice to generate these
calibration images frequently at times that the X-ray source is switched off. It is
recommended to re-calibrate the gain correction image at least once per year, at least
when e.g. the X-ray tube is exchanged or anything changes in the X-ray imaging
geometry (e.g. the distance between the X-ray source and the detector).
The detector can contain deviating pixels. To have the best possible image quality it is
advised to perform a defect pixel correction in the host system. It is recommended to
create a defect pixels calibration image at least every year, or more frequently in case of
heavy use.

Installing the Xineos
Detector
To evaluate a GigE device like Xineos you will need to install SaperaLT with CamExpert
and the Generic GigE Vision driver (for GigE devices) to grab Images. This software is
compatible with Windows7 64 bit but can also used with WindowsXP 32 bit.
Installing
software is available on the Teledyne DALSA FTP site:
ftp.teledynedalsa.com
username: xineosuser
password: xray03
Note: If you log in as an anonymous FTP user, you will only see the Public folders on the
Teledyne DALSA FTP site. You must log in as ‘xineosuser’ in order to download the
correct driver files.
CamExpert
Within the 2_sapera folder, the following folders can be found:
If you are evaluating the Product, you should download the contents of ‘OnlyCamExpert’
If you are evaluating and developing your own software for the Product you should
download the contents of ‘SDK_includingCamExpert’
CamExpert is evaluation software. The Sapera SDK is a set of development tools and
documentation for creating your own software for interfacing to the product. Please
download the appropriate materials and follow the instructions that are part of that
download.
Sequential Grab
To acquire and store a sequence of images for evaluation purposes a sequential grab tool
is available within the 3_seqgrab folder. For 64 bit or 32 bit systems that are using Xineos
with GigE interface, the correct folder is ‘gigev’. For 32 bit systems the correct sub-folder
is ‘Release32’ and for 64 bit systems the correct sub-folder is ‘Release64.’ Also the
complete project file of this tool can be downloaded as example code.
Connecting
1. After the install is complete, plug in the detectors communication cable.
2. Power up the detector.
3. After powering up the detector, the application automatically detects the detector.
This may take up to 30 seconds Wait until the detector connected indicator in the task
bar (shown below) has confirmed that a connection has been established (the red cross
over the camera icon disappears).
Selecting the “SHOW Status Dialog Box” will open the device status window, which
displays the serial number of the detector that has been detected on the network and its
current status. Additional information with respect to the detector model, serial number
and MAC address is also displayed.
The user can also view the detector and the PC IP addresses in this window. The default
assigned detector IP address can be modified using the Teledyne DALSA Network
Configuration Tool, which is part of the installation package.
Acquiring Images
The CamExpert software can be started to acquire images.
Select the correct device and check the video status (bottom-right status bar) to verify if
the detector is connected to the system; Pixel clock, frame valid and line valid have to be
present.
The user has the option to either snap an image or to grab multiple images. Snapping an
image produces a single frame, whereas the grabbing process generates multiple frames
by operating in a continuous mode.
To snap an image:
Click the Snap button. The Detector has now snapped a single frame. The image appears
in the GUI window.

Functional Description
Commands
CamExpert is the camera interfacing tool supported by the Sapera library. When used
with a Xineos detector CamExpert allows a user to test all Xineos operating modes.
An important component of CamExpert is its live acquisition display window which
allows immediate verification of timing or control parameters without the need to run a
separate acquisition program.
The central section of CamExpert provides access to the Xineos detector. Five tabs group
detector parameters depending on their type as described in the summary below. Each
detector configuration parameter is described in detail following the summary.
The CamExpert application uses 5 windows to simplify choosing and configuring camera
files or acquisition parameters for the installed device.
• Device Selector pane: View and select from any installed Sapera acquisition device.
Once a device is selected CamExpert will only present acquisition parameters applicable
to that device. Optionally select a camera file included with the Sapera installation or
saved by the user.
• Parameters pane: Allows viewing or changing all acquisition parameters supported by
the acquisition device. CamExpert displays parameters only if those parameters are
supported by the installed device. This avoids confusion by eliminating parameter
choices when they do not apply to the hardware in use.
• Display pane: Provides a live or single frame acquisition display. Frame buffer
parameters are shown in an information bar above the image window.
• Control Buttons: The Display pane includes CamExpert control buttons.
In the parameters pane the device specific settings can be changed. The Xineos settings
are described below.
Gain
The Gain setting provides a gain range of approximately 6 to 36 dB.
Integration Time
If the detector operates in Rolling Shutter Synchronization Mode the detectors integration
time can be changed from approximately 33* to 1500 milliseconds.
If the detector operates in Free Running Synchronization Mode the detectors integration
time can be changed with the ExtendedExposure register value. The exact integration
time can be calculated using the following formula:
Integration time in milliseconds [ms]:
*The maximum frame rate is limited by the GigE interface. Therefore the minimum
extended exposure time value is 652 (normal mode) or 429 (binning mode).
Synchronization modes
The detector supports the following timing modes:
• Free running
In Free running mode the detector will continuously read out the sensor and
send the sensor signal the host. The integration time can be changed by delaying
the next readout of the sensor, in this way the integration time can be changed
from 33 to 1500 millisecond. For more information please refer to chapter 5:
Functional Description, Synchronization Modes
• External Trigger
In External trigger mode the detector will start the readout of the first line on the
falling edge of the trigger input, then will integrate until the falling edge of the
next trigger input. For more information please refer to chapter 5: Functional
Description, Synchronization Modes
• Snapshot
In snapshot mode the detector will reset the sensor after rising edge on the
trigger input, then will integrate until the falling edge of the trigger input and
will start read out of the sensor and send sensor signal to the host starting on
falling edge of the trigger signal.
For more information please refer to chapter 5: Functional Description,
Synchronization Modes
Test Images
The detector has an embedded test pattern generator and can be enabled with the Test
Image Selector. The following selections are possible:
• None (sensor signal)
• Horizontal Wedge
• Vertical Wedge
• Purity
• Columns
• Rows
• White
Synchronization modes
The detector can be used in combination with either a DC X-ray source or a pulsed X-ray
source.
For safety reasons, the on-time of the X-ray source should never be controlled directly by
the detector synchronization output. Proposer control of the X-ray source remains a
system/host responsibility.
are reset and a new integration period commences. The frame rate (#frames/second) is
equal to 1/(integration time).
The period of time in between successive frame read-outs (dark green) is used to fire the
pulsed X-ray source. The width of this time-period can either be programmed via the
detectors command interface by setting the exposure time or it can be controlled by the
“TRIGGER-IN” input signal (active high time).
Synchronization of the X-ray source with the detector timing can be realized via the
master / slave synchronization option as included in the detector.
In slave mode the detector synchronizes the start of the vertical blanking window (dark
green window) with the rising edge of the applied synchronization signal. When
operated in master mode, the detector delivers a positive going synchronization signal to
the outside world for synchronization of the X-ray source. The rising edge of the
synchronization signal determines the start of the vertical blanking window.
For safety reasons, the on-time of the X-ray source should always be controlled outside
the Detector.
Snapshot mode
In this mode the detector will take a single image at the moment a trigger signal is
applied to the detector. The detector is the slave, and the host will be master.
As the sensor is continuously integrating when in idle mode, the sensor pixel signal must
be reset by a dummy frame read-out (Frame N) before actual image integration can
commence (Frame N+1). To allow sufficient time for this reset, the delay between trigger
input and the start of the X-ray pulse should be at least 33ms.
The integration time is determined by the pulse width of external trigger. The image
readout time will again be 33msec.
External mode
In this mode the detector will take a single image at the moment a trigger signal is
applied to the detector. The detector is the slave, and the host will be master.
This mode is equal to the Snapshot mode but no reset is needed before integration can
start.
Shuttering
Please note: the Xineos Detector does not have a shuttering mechanism built into the
detector. The detector can be operated quite normally with a continuous beam X-ray
source, however there can be motion blur associated with continuous beam imaging. In
the case that pulsed X-ray operation is required, the X-ray pulse must be carefully timed
so that X-rays from the pulse are not incident on the detector during readout. This will
cause imaging artifacts that show up as very uneven illumination within the images.
Error Handling
The detector includes a read-only register DetectorStatus which indicates if the latest
command could not be executed and indicates the possible cause. Refer to Chapter 4.
Error handling of the command-list for more details.
