Foreword
The descriptions and service procedures contained in this manual are based on designs
and methods studies carried out up to June 2005.

The products are under continuous development. Vehicles and components produced
after the above date may therefore have different specifications and repair methods.
When this is judged to have a significant bearing on this manual, supplementary service
bulletins will be issued to cover the changes.

The new edition of this manual will update the changes.

In service procedures where the title incorporates an operation number, this is a
reference to V.S.T. (Volvo Standard Times).

Service procedures which do not include an operation number in the title are for general
information and no reference is made to V.S.T.

The following levels of observations, cautions and warnings are used in this Service
Documentation:

Note: Indicates a procedure, practice, or condition that must be followed in order to have
the vehicle or component function in the manner intended.

Caution: Indicates an unsafe practice where damage to the product could occur.
Warning: Indicates an unsafe practice where personal injury or severe damage to the
product could occur.

Danger: Indicates an unsafe practice where serious personal injury or death could occur.

Multiplexed electrical system
Volvo Buses has introduced a multiplex electrical system, The retarder control unit is fully integrated into the

Test measurements
Measurements on the control unit are done with 9998543
and measurement box 9998699 which is connected to
the control unit contacts. This allows direct voltage and
resistance measurements on the control unit pins.

For further information about the special tools to be used,

please refer to

Voltage measurement at the control unit

To measure the signal between a control unit and a
component:

• Connect the measurement box between the control

unit and the cabling.

• Put the start switch in the drive position (II).

Resistance measurement of component

To measure the resistance of a component and the
current path:

• Connect the measurement box to the cables only.

• Put the start switch in the stop position (0).

Resistance measurement at a component

To measure a component’s resistance:

• Connect the adapter box to the component only.

• Put the start switch in the stop position (0).

Voltage measurement at component

To measure the signal between a control unit and a
component:

• Connect the adapter box between the control unit and

the component.

• Put the start switch in the drive position (II).

Resistance measurement of cabling

To measure the resistance in cabling:

• Connect an adapter box to each end of the cable.

• Put the start switch in the stop position (0).

Explanation of fault code table

For each fault code there are three tables given and
an illustration which partly gives general information
on the fault code and partly describes the appropriate
measurements which should be made in order to localise
the source of the fault.

First table, general information

Engine type: Specifies engine type on which the current fault code is implemented.
Component number: Number of the component the subsystem of which caused the fault code.
Wiring diagram: Designation of relevant wiring diagrams in the service handbook for
the electrical system of the bus model in question and (in brackets) the
designation of the wiring diagram in service literature for previous electrical
architectures.
General Symptoms which appear with all fault types (FMI) which can occur for the
fault symptom: fault code.
Appropriate test Test in VCADS Pro which can be used to investigate the component’s
in VCADS Pro: function more closely.
Status test Specifies whether there is a relevant status test for the component which can
in BIC: be carried out directly in the instrument control unit display.
Adapter at Instructions about the adapter to use on the component connector while
component: taking measurements.
Adapter at Instructions about the type of adapter to use on the control unit connector
control unit: while taking measurements.
Illuation: Schematic illustration of the component’s subsystem. Particular pins on
the control unit and measurement points at the component are shown in
the illustration.

Second table, fault type information

Type of fault: Indicates which different types of fault (FMI) can occur for the particular fault
code.
Symptom: Describes which fault symptoms there are for the different types of fault.
Possible reason: Gives possible faults which can be the reason for the fault code for the
particular type of fault.

Third table, measurements

There are two types of measurements, each of which has its own tables, resistance and voltage. On the left above
each measurement table, there is a figure which shows how the measurement equipment should be connected to the
component for each measurement.
Measurement: Indicates which part the measurement is intended to check.
Key position: Specifies the switch position for each measurement.
Measurement points: There are two columns under the measurement point category, measurement
box and wiring schedule. The column labelled “Measurement box” specifies the
number corresponding to a marking on measurement box 9998699. The wiring
schedule specifies what the pin is called on the component or ECU in Volvo’s
wiring schedule. The wiring schedule to be used is specified in the first table.
Expected value: Indicates with 20 % accuracy the values the measurement should give if the
part (component) is functioning normally.
Measured value: This column is where the measured value should be entered.
Miscellaneous: A note is made here if special conditions or considerations apply to this
measurement.
