Hennes & Mauritz AB

(Swedish pronunciation: hens go Mauritz) is a Swedish multinational clothing-retail

company known for its fast-fashion clothing for men, women, teenagers and children. H&M
and its associated companies operate in 62 countries with over 4,500 stores and
employed around 132,000 people. It is the second-largest global clothing retailer, just
behind Spain-based Inditex (parent company of Zara). The company has a significant
online presence, with online shopping available in 33 countries.

History

The company was founded by Erling Persson in 1947, when he opened his first shop in
Sweden. The shop, called Hennes , exclusively sold women's clothing. A store was opened
in Norway in 1964. In 968, Persson acquired the hunting apparel retailer Mauritz Widforss,
which led to the inclusion of a menswear collection in the product range and the name
change to Hennes & Mauritz.

The company was listed on the Stockholm Stock Exchange in 1974. Shortly after, in 1976,
the first store outside Scandinavia opened in London. H&M continued to expand in Europe,
and began to retail online in 1998, when it was able to buy the domain hm.com from a
company called A1 in a non-published domain transactio.

The two-letter domain was registered in the early 1990s, but data on the first registration is
lost. The opening of the first U.S. store on 31 March 2000, on Fifth Avenue in New York
marked the start of the expansion outside of Europe.

In 2008, the company announced in a press release that it would begin selling home
furnishings. Initially distributed through the company's online catalog, there are now H&M
Home stores located internationally.
Following expansion in Asia and the Middle East and the launch of concept stores
including COS, Weekday, Monki, and Cheap Monday, in 2009 and 2010, branding
consultancy Interbrand ranked the company as the twenty-first most-valuable global brand,
making it the highest-ranked retailer in the survey. Its worth was estimated at $12–
16 billion.

The H&M group reaches fashion fans across the globe and has come a long way since the
first Hennes store opened in the Swedish city Västerås in 1947. Follow us on a tour
through the first 70 years of bringing fashion to the world in an exciting and conscious way.

1947 - 1959
In the year of 1946 the 30-year-old Swedish entrepreneur Erling Persson goes on a road
trip through the USA. In New York, the idea of selling women’s fashion in a new way is
born. The following year, 1947, Persson opens a new women’s wear store in Västerås,
Sweden. He calls it Hennes, Swedish for “Hers”.The soon-to-be-famous Hennes logotype
is designed by the founder himself. A first store in Sweden’s capital, Stockholm, opens in
1952. When a second Stockholm store opens in 1954, the popularity is already at fever
pitch. That same year, Hennes takes out a full-page colour ad in Sweden’s largest daily, a
pioneering belief in the power of marketing. The 1950s closes with the opening of a
flagship store in the first of five skyscrapers built in the Hötorget area in central Stockholm.

1960 - 1979
In 1968, Hennes acquires the Stockholm-based hunting apparel and fishing equipment
retailer Mauritz Widforss, and the name is changed to Hennes & Mauritz. This is the start
of offering of men's and also children's clothing, leading to H&M offering clothes for the
entire family. The expansion is rapid: by 1969, Hennes & Mauritz has 42 stores. During
these decades, the international growth begins. Norway comes first, followed by Denmark,
U.K., and Switzerland.

In 1973, Hennes & Mauritz starts selling underwear. The same year, ABBA-member Anni-
Frid Lyngstad becomes the first "supermodel" to be photographed for the company,
wearing make-up from the new cosmetics range. The growth pace increases even further,
with five or six new stores opening every year.
In 1974, Hennes & Mauritz is listed on the Stockholm Stock Exchange. The same year, the
stores are rebranded with the abbreviation “H&M”.
In the late 1970s, modern teenagers get their own version of H&M as the Impuls concept
is launched, inspired by U.S. denim stores.

2000 - 2009
In 2000, a major H&M flagship store opens on Fifth Avenue in New York. The opening of
the first store in the U.S. marks the start of the expansion outside Europe. H&M and Karl
Lagerfeld take the world of fashion by surprise in 2004, teaming up to show that design
isn't a question of price. Since this first designer collaboration fashion giants like Versace,
Roberto Cavalli, Alexander Wang and Stella McCartney have been invited to make their
design accessible to fashion fans globally. The expansion of online sales continues, initially
to European countries. H&M goes far east, opening the first stores in Shanghai and Hong
Kong in 2007. 2007, marking 60 years after the first Hennes store opened, COS is born.
The honour of hosting the first store goes to London, UK. Weekday, Monki, and Cheap
Monday are welcomed to the H&M group through the purchase of FaBric Scandinavien
AB. Home styling becomes more fun thanks to the launch of H&M Home in 2009. In 2000
Rolf Eriksen is appointed CEO. Karl-Johan Persson takes over as CEO in 2009

2010 and onwards

In 2010, H&M for the first time launches a full fashion collection made from sustainable
materials. The H&M Incentive Program for all H&M group employees is launched in 2011.
Garment collecting is introduced worldwide in 2013. Since the start, more than 45,000 tons
of old textiles have been brought by customers into the H&M stores for reuse and
recycling. Long live fashion! Yet another member is added to the H&M family, “& Other
Stories”. An independent brand created within the H&M group, with design studios in Paris
and Stockholm. Launch year: 2013. The rapid expansion continues, there are now H&M
stores in Europe, North America, Asia, in the Middle East, Africa, South America, and
Australia. In 2014, the new H&M Sport is launched with fashionable sportswear in
functional fabrics for the entire family. The same year, H&M’s shoe concept is extended
and updated. H&M Beauty is on everybody's lips, as a full range of specially designed
makeup, body care and hair styling products enters the scene in 2015. To accelerate the
development of bold and disruptive ideas that can help close the loop for fashion. The
Global Change Award is launched in 2015 by the H&M Foundation. The Global Change
Award is a challenge designed to spur early innovations that can accelerate the shift from
a linear to a circular fashion industry, with the aim of protecting the planet and our living
conditions. The new brand ARKET is created as a modern-day market offering a broad yet
selected range of essentials for men, women and children and a smaller assortment for
the home. Launched in 2017, ARKET has its roots in the functional and timeless design of
the Nordic tradition. The first store opens on Regent Street in London as well as online at
arket.com in 18 European markets.

Åhléns AB is a chain of Swedish department stores. With locations in almost every city in
the country, including 18 in Stockholm alone as of March 2007, it is the fourth largest
group of fashion stores in Sweden.

Åhléns began as a mail order business. It was created in 1899 by Johan Petter Åhlén and
Erik Holm, in the little town of Insjön in the province of Dalarna. The name of the company
was first “Åhlén och Holm” (Åhlén and Holm).
The first item sold by the company was a print of the royal family. Over 100,000 copies
were sold, and it was very successful. Åhlén and Holm continued to grow over the years.
After only 10 years, JP Åhlén had a company with a worth of 1.5 million SEK and 255
employees. In 1915, the company moved to Stockholm with half its employees. Before he
moved the company, JP Åhlén secured a seven-floor storage building.

In 1932, Åhlén decided that he wanted to expand the business and create a retail trade
store with low prices. He established the Tempo department store and opened it on
Östermalmstorg in Stockholm. Åhlén died in 1939, leaving control of the companies to his
oldest son. On the 50th anniversary (1945) of the establishment of Åhléns and Holm, the
company boasted a worth of 87 million SEK, and with a force of more than 2700 workers.
The mail order business was shut down in the 1960s, and a store called Åhléns City was
opened in 1964 in the heart of Stockholm. In 1985, all the Tempo department stores re-
branded as Åhléns. In 1988, Åhléns City was sold to Axel Johnson AB, which is owned by
Antonia Ax:son Johnson.

Åhléns stores have now been converted into department stores and moved upmarket, and
now concentrate on four business areas: Fashion (Mode), Beauty (Skönhet), Homeware
(Hem), and Media. Åhléns loyalty card is called the Åhléns Club. In 2009, Åhléns City's
sales totalled 6202 million SEK in stores, and the profit was 216 million SEK.

! The North Face
The North Face began in 1966 as a climbing equipment retail store in San Francisco,
founded by Douglas Tompkins and his wife, Susie Tompkins. It was acquired two years
later by Kenneth "Hap" Klopp.

In 2000, The North Face was acquired by VF Corporation for US$25.4 million, becoming a
wholly owned subsidiary.
In December 2008, The North Face filed a lawsuit in the United States District Court for
the Eastern District of Missouri against The South Butt, its creator James A. Winkelmann
Jr., and a company which handled the firm's marketing and manufacturing. In the legal
action, The North Face alleged trademark infringement and sought injunctive relief. After
the court ordered mediation in the case, the parties reached a closed settlement
agreement on April 1, 2010; however, in October 2012, Winkelmann admitted in court that
he and his father violated the settlement agreement with The North Face and agreed to
pay US$65,000, an amount that will be reduced by US$1,000 for every month of
compliance.

In May 2019, Leo Burnett Tailor Made, a marketing agency for The North Face Brazil,
revealed that they had surreptitiously replaced photos of popular outdoor destinations on
Wikipedia with photos featuring North Face products in an attempt to get these products to
appear more prominently in search engine results. Here are some supplier list for the north

Tesco is a British multinational groceries and general merchandise retailer with

headquarters in Welwyn Garden City, Hertfordshire, England, United Kingdom. It is the
third-largest retailer in the world measured by gross revenues and ninth-largest retailer in
the world measured by revenues. It has shops in seven countries across Asia and Europe,
and is the market leader of groceries in the UK (where it has a market share of around
28.4%), Ireland, Hungary and Thailand.
Tesco was founded in 1919 by Jack Cohen as a group of market stalls. The Tesco name
first appeared in 1924, after Cohen purchased a shipment of tea from T. E. Stockwell and
combined those initials with the first two letters of his surname, and the first Tesco shop
opened in 1931 in Burnt Oak, Barnet. His business expanded rapidly, and by 1939 he had
over 100 Tesco shops across the country.

Originally a UK grocer, Tesco has expanded globally since the early 1990s, with operations
in 11 other countries in the world. The company pulled out of the USA in 2013, but as of
2018 continues to see growth elsewhere. Since the 1960s, Tesco has diversified into areas
such as the retailing of books, clothing, electronics, furniture, toys, petrol, software,
financial services, telecoms and internet services. In the 1990s Tesco repositioned itself
from being a down-market high-volume low-cost retailer, to one designed to attract a range
of social groups by offering products ranging from low-cost "Tesco Value" items to its
"Tesco Finest" range. This broadening of its appeal was successful and saw the chain
grow from 500 shops in the mid-1990s to 2,500 shops fifteen years later.

J. C. Penney Company is an American department store chain with 864 locations in 49

U.S. states and Puerto Rico. Most J. C. Penney stores are located in suburban shopping
malls. Before 1966, most of its stores were located in downtown areas. As shopping malls
became more popular during the later half of the 20th century, J. C. Penney followed the
trend by relocating and developing stores to anchor the malls. In more recent years, the
chain has continued to follow consumer traffic, echoing the retailing trend of opening some
freestanding stores, including some next door to competitors. Certain stores are located in
power centers. The company has been an Internet retailer since 1998. It has streamlined
its catalog and distribution while undergoing renovation improvements at store level.

In 1913, the company was incorporated under the new name, J. C. Penney Company, with
William Henry McManus as a co-founder. In 1914, the headquarters was moved to New
York City to simplify buying, financing, and transportation of goods.[11] By 1917, the
company operated 175 stores in 22 states in the United States. J. C. Penney acquired The
Crescent Corset Company in 1920, the company's first wholly owned subsidiary. In 1922,
the company's oldest active private brand, Big Mac work clothes, was launched. The
company opened its 500th store in 1924 in Hamilton, Missouri, James Cash Penney's
hometown. By the opening of the 1,000th store in 1928, gross business had reached
$190,000,000 (equivalent to $2.77 billion in 2019).
In 1940, Sam Walton began working at a J. C. Penney in Des Moines, Iowa. Walton later
went on to found future retailer Walmart in 1962.[12] By 1941, J. C. Penney operated 1,600
stores in all 48 states. In 1956, J. C. Penney started national advertising with a series of
advertisements in Life magazine. J. C. Penney credit cards were first issued in 1959.

On January 15, 2014, J. C. Penney announced it was closing 33 under-performing stores

and laying off 2,000 employees.[52] CEO Mike Ullman explained in a news release, "As we
continue to progress toward long-term profitable growth, it is necessary to reexamine the
financial performance of our store portfolio and adjust our national footprint accordingly."[53]
J. C. Penney's stock continued its decline until their first quarter results in 2014 showed
signs of improvement, and sent the share value back into the double digits.

On May 21, 2019 JCPenney announced that Shawn Gensch will be their Chief customer
officer to take effect on June 3, 2019. Mr. Gensch comes from Sprouts Farmers Market
where he was their CCO.[74] Also on May 21, JCPenney announced a net sales decline of
5.6% and a net loss of $154 million for its fiscal first quarter of 2019, which ended on May
5th.[75]

Target Corporation is the eighth-largest retailer in the United States, and is a component of
the S&P 500 Index. Founded by George Dayton and headquartered in Minneapolis, the
company was originally named Goodfellow Dry Goods in June 1902 before being renamed
the Dayton's Dry Goods Company in 1903 and later the Dayton Company in 1910. The
first Target store opened in Roseville, Minnesota in 1962 while the parent company was
renamed the Dayton Corporation in 1967. It became the Dayton-Hudson Corporation after
merging with the J.L. Hudson Company in 1969 and held ownership of several department
store chains including Dayton's, Hudson's, Marshall Field's, and Mervyn's.
Target established itself as the highest-earning division of the Dayton-Hudson Corporation
in the 1970s; it began expanding the store nationwide in the 1980s and introduced new
store formats under the Target brand in the 1990s. The company has found success as a
cheap-chic player in the industry.[4] The parent company was renamed the Target
Corporation in 2000 and divested itself of its last department store chains in 2004. It
suffered from a massive and highly publicized security breach of customer credit card data
and the failure of its short-lived Target Canada subsidiary in the early 2010s but
experienced revitalized success with its expansion in urban markets within the United
States.
As of May 26, 2019, Target operates 1,851[1] stores throughout the United States. The
company is ranked No. 39 on the 2018 Fortune 500 list of the largest United States
corporations by total revenue.[5] Their retail formats include the discount store Target, the
hypermarket SuperTarget, and "small-format stores previously named CityTarget and
TargetExpress before being consolidated under the Target branding. Target is often
recognized for its emphasis on the needs of its younger, image-conscious shoppers
whereas its rival Walmart more heavily relies on its strategy of always low prices.

Adidas AG
Adidas AG is a multinational corporation, founded and headquartered in Herzogenaurach,
Germany, that designs and manufactures shoes, clothing and accessories. It is the largest
sportswear manufacturer in Europe, and the second largest in the world, after Nike.It is the
holding company for the Adidas Group, which consists of the Reebok sportswear
company, TaylorMade golf company (including Ashworth), Runtastic, an Austrian fitness
technology company and 8.33% of German football club Bayern Munich. Adidas' revenue
for 2018 was listed at €21.915 billion.

The company was started by Adolf Dassler in his mother's house; he was joined by his
elder brother Rudolf in 1924 under the name Dassler Brothers Shoe Factory. Dassler
assisted in the development of spiked running shoes (spikes) for multiple athletic events.
To enhance the quality of spiked athletic footwear, he transitioned from a previous model
of heavy metal spikes to utilising canvas and rubber. Dassler persuaded U.S. sprinter
Jesse Owens to use his handmade spikes at the 1936 Summer Olympics. In 1949,
following a breakdown in the relationship between the brothers, Adolf created Adidas, and
Rudolf established Puma, which became Adidas' business rival.

Adidas' logo is three stripes, which is used on the company's clothing and shoe designs as
a marketing aid. The branding, which Adidas bought in 1952 from Finnish sports company
Karhu Sports, became so successful that Dassler described Adidas as the three stripes
company. The brand name is uncapitalised and is stylized with a lower case.

Adidas sells a range of clothing items, varying from men's and women's t-shirts, jackets,
hoodies, pants and leggings. The first Adidas item of apparel was the Franz Beckenbauer
tracksuit created in 1967. Adidas AG is the largest manufacturer of sports bras in Europe,
and the second largest manufacturer in the world. One of the main focuses of Adidas has
always been football kits, and the associated equipment. Adidas remains a major company
in the global supply of team kits for international association football teams and clubs.

Hugo Boss AG

Hugo Boss is a German luxury fashion house headquartered in Metzingen. It was founded
in 1924 by Hugo Boss and originally produced general purpose clothing. With the rise of
the Nazi Party in the 1930s, Boss began to produce and sell Nazi uniforms. Boss would
eventually supply the wartime German government with uniforms for organisations such as
the Hitler Youth and Waffen-SS, resulting in a large boost in sales. After World War II and
the founder's death in 1948, Hugo Boss started to turn its focus from uniforms to men's
suits. The company went public in 1988 and introduced a fragrance line that same year,
added mens and womenswear diffusion lines in 1997, a full women's collection in 2000 as
well as children's clothing in 2006/2007, and has since evolved into a major global fashion
house. As of 2016 it owned more than 1,100 retail stores worldwide.

In 1923, Hugo Boss founded his own clothing company in Metzingen, Germany, where it is
still based. In 1924, he started a factory along with two partners. The company produced
shirts, jackets, work clothing, sportswear and raincoats. Due to the economic climate of
Germany at the time, Boss was forced into bankruptcy. In 1931, he reached an agreement
with his creditors, leaving him with six sewing machines to start again.

In 2005, Marzotto spun off its fashion brands into the Valentino Fashion Group, which was
then sold to Permira private equity group. In March 2015, Permira announced plans to sell
the remaining shareholding of 12%. Since the exit by Permira, 91% of the shares floated
on the Börse Frankfurt, and the residual 2% was held by the company. 7% of the shares
are owned by the Marzotto family. Hugo Boss has at least 6,102 points of sale in 124
countries. Hugo Boss AG directly owns over 364 shops, 537 monobrand shops, and over
1,000 franchise-owned shops.
