SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY INDICATORS
ARGENTINA 2006

LETTER TO THE READERS

Along these past four years administration we have focused, as priority objectives, on the construction of a
scientific and technological policy for Argentina, looking forward its linkage with the main policies, strategies and
actions developed by the different areas of the National Government. The annual plans, programs as well as
prospective exercises put in practice in recently years have converged in a National Strategic Bicentenary 2006-
2010 Plan, in a mid and long term horizon for science, technology and innovation development, close related to
the new national economic development model.

This initiative set up the bases for promoting and financing the scientific and technological research in order to
enhance innovation in Argentinean enterprises, combining this actions with appropriate policies aiming at
training of human resources, giving hierarchy to the Innovation, Technological and Scientific National System
and the respective actors that compose it. The elaboration and evaluation process of this Plan as well as the
decisions taken and the ones to be adopted in a close future, implies the necessity of having reliable information
in order to know, analyse and get a correct evaluation of the fulfilment and impact of the objectives that had
been scheduled.

This publication “Science and Technology Indicators -Argentina 2006” shows up our commitment to carry on
with this documents since 1993, representing useful information for decision making, introducing indicators
related to investment of scientific and technological activities, human resources in research and development
projects, the results of the products of this activities, an a set of selected indicators that allow us to define
suitable international comparisons. In addition, this report includes provincial and regional information and other
general indicators.

We hope this report could represent an information community service about the scientific and technological
activities and may become a useful contribution for the designing of science and technology policies and the
adequate evaluation of activities results. With great pleasure we point out that from an investment perspective,
the data show a growth of 35% with regard to 2005 and a duplication of this value since the beginning of our
administration, hence an increase of its ratio related to the GDP. On the other hand, about the human resources
data, the number of people dedicated to research activity has been risen up, standing out an increase of 19% in
the fellowship holders in comparison with 2005 and 51% from 2003.

Finally, I would like to thank all the personnel staff from public and private institutions that took part in this work
providing key information to make possible this yearly statistical publication.
