September 14, 2022

Welcome to Our Inaugural Capstone Design Meeting

• Needs Statement: Existing rescue systems and practices are

inadequate, lag in response time and are incapable of evacuating
people and pets from high rise building exposed to flooding, fire or
smoke. MADL is seeking your help with the design of a Rescue
Aerial-Vehicle (RAV) for the evacuation of people and pets from
high rise buildings and/or tall structures to a safe place in case of
emergency. Emergency in this case is limited to fire, smoke and
flooding. Twin towers is an unfortunate example of these
challenges.

• Target Statement: It is determined that existing rescue techniques

and systems are inefficient, insufficient and are untimely. It is
therefore the aim of this capstone design project to design and
build a functional prototype of a durable, safe and cost effective
Reusable Rescue Air vehicle.

The minimum height is 80 m (20th floor) and max height is 500 m

(120th Floor or more). Should be capable of transporting a payload
of 500 Kg at a reasonable speed. It is not required to account for
heavy storms or wind speeds greater than 50 km/hr during launch
or flight. Should be capable of transporting a payload of 500 Kg at
a reasonable speed. It is not required to account for heavy storms
or wind speeds greater than 50 km/hr during launch or flight.

• Design Objectives: Can be summarized as follows:

(i) Reliable and improved deployment mechanism leading to
limited response.
(ii) Increase safe rescue of humans and pets to a min of 90% via
improved response time, enhanced guidance, improved
visibility and control, and vehicle reliability.
(iii) Design of RAV must account for elderly, physically
challenged, children and pets.
(iv) Retrieval rate in daylight min 90% and at night min 80% via
improved visibility.
(v) Can accommodate different environments.
(vi) Safe deployment, flight, landing, and stow
(vii) Limited maintenance.
(viii) Cost competitive.

• Design Constraints:
(i) High accurate rescue rate of humans/pets ,
(ii) Power requirements, endurance, and range,
(iii) Durable and robust,
(iv) Guidance and control,
(v) Collisions avoidance and Interference
(vi) Weight limits,
(vii) Cost effectiveness (must not exceed 4% of cost of high rise)
(viii) Approval of Department of Transport
(ix) Maintenance requirements

• Main Design Systems:

(i) Overall system design of lift,
(ii) Structural assembly
(iii) Collection and upload set up
(iv) Power Plant
(v) Imaging, sensory and instrumentation
(vi) Controller
(vii) Software

• Team Organisation:
TBD by team.

• Deliverables:
(a) Novel functional design that meets the design spec.
(b) Report containing the group’s effort
(c) Poster highlighting your excellent effort

• Progress Meeting: I would like to see individual and team

progress. The meeting will run as follows:
(i) Each of the team members will get 5 minutes to summarize
her/his progress.
(ii) I will comment on each and guide the team.
(iii) The remaining time is for your questions.
(iv) If we do not have time to answer your questions, please drop me
an email.
Good Luck!
