LESSON 2: STANDARD CLEANING PROCEDURES OF NAIL CARE TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT:

STERILIZATION – is the process of destroying all living microorganism


SANITATION – is the process of destroying some, but not all microorganisms.
DISINFECTANT – is a substance used to control microorganism on non-living surfaces such as tools,
equipment and other furniture and fixtures.
ANTISEPTIC – is an agent that prevent the multiplication of microorganism, this is milder than disinfectant
which can be used directly on the skin.

Activity 1: Identify Me

STANDARD CLEANING PROCEDURES OF NAIL CARE TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT:


1. Read directions on how to use a disinfectant.
2. Measure and mix disinfectant as directed
3. Saturate a cleaning cloth with disinfectant solution and wipe the entire surface area of the equipment.
4. Wipe the surface with paper towel to dry it.
5. Dispose of sanitizing solution and used towels.

PREPARATION OF METAL IMPLEMENT FOR STERILIZATION:


1. Soak tool and implements in hot soapy water solution, rinse them thoroughly.
2. Place the tools / implement in a 70 to 90 % of alcohol solution.
3. Remove the tools / implements from solution, wipe, dry, and place them into dry sterilizer.

CLEAN TOOLS ACCORDING TO STANDARD PROCEDURE

Common Methods of Sterilization and Sanitation:


1. Physical Agents
The physical agent for controlling microorganism includes
a. Moist heat – such as boiling water and steaming
b. Dry heat – dry heat to sterilize sheets, towels , gauze and cotton
c. Radiation / Ultraviolet – use of ultraviolet light to destroy the DNA of microorganism or
the process that leaves germs incapable to performing cellular functions necessary for life.

2. Chemical Agents
also used for sterilizing nail care tools and equipment , especially those that made of heat sensitive
materials such as plastic. It can be classified as :
a. Antiseptic – is a chemical substance that kill or retard the growth of bacteria without killing
them. It can be safely used in the skin.
b. Disinfectant – destroys bacteria and it is used to sanitize implements. A good disinfectant
should be convenient to prepare , fast acting, odorless , non- corrosive , non-irritating to skin
and economical.

CONDUCT INVENTORY OF TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT:


After every working session, make an inventory of specific activities:
1. Tools which are made of plastic should be kept clean and sanitized properly in preparation for the patron.
2. Empty bottles and containers are discarded in a covered trash bin.
3. Used treatment products and other chemicals are stored, arranged and properly labeled in the cabinet.
4. Finger bowls must be sanitized before use of every client.
5. The hand and foot spa machines must be flushed with a solution of about 5% of bleach and circulate the
liquid through the system for at least 10 minutes.
6. Leave the solution in the hand and foot spa machines over night or at least 5 to 10 hours before draining
the machines so that they are thoroughly sanitized.
7. Tabletops and door handles are wiped with disinfectant and the floor should be mopped with disinfectant
as well.
8. Metal tools and instruments must be sterilized following proper sterilization techniques. after the process
store in a dry cabinet until needed.
9. Tools/implements which are made of porous materials such as nail files, buffer , nail brushes and
orangewood stick can harbor bacteria easily . Since they are wood products which cannot be sterilized ,
these tools should no be reused.
10. Waste materials should be disposed properly in an enclosed waste bin fitted with polythene bag.
11. Remember to wear protective gloves while doing this.

12. Contaminated wastes should be disposed off as recommended by local authority.


13. Any tools and equipment in poor condition must be repaired immediately or disposed properly so as not
to pose danger to the client as well as the beauticians.
STORAGE:
A manicurist must ensure that storage of nail care tools ,materials and equipment within the establishment
meets the following requirements.

1. Flammable and combustible chemicals are stored away from potential sources of ignition such as an open
flame or electrical devices.
2. All nail care chemicals are stored in closed bottles and containers.
3. Storage Units
cabinet , drawers, containers used for storage of implements and towels are clean
clean linen is stored in an enclosed , dust proof cabinet or container
implements which have been used on clients are not mixed with clean ones.
4. Supplies
unused supplies , except product application , brushes are stored in a clean, closed container or
drawer
used/ soiled disposable supplies are discarded immediately in a clean, closed waste receptacle
5.Implements storage
implement that have been used on a client or soiled in any manner are placed in a proper
labelled covered receptacle until disinfected
Sanitized implements are stored in a clean closed container or drawer until used
6. Towels
cloth towels are deposited in a closed receptacle after use
used / spoiled towels are no not used again until properly laundered and sanitized
disposable towels are discarded in a covered waste receptacle immediately following
each nail technology service
