UNIT I CELLULAR CONCEPTS AND MOBILE RADIO PROPAGATION 12


Overview of wireless communication– Cellular concept: Frequency reuse, Hand off, System
capacity – Radio Propagation: Large scale path loss, Reflection, Diffraction, Scattering, Link
budget design - Small scale fading – Multipath channel parameters : Doppler shift, Time dispersion
parameters, Coherence bandwidth, Doppler spread , Coherence time – Types of fading: Flat fading,
Frequency selective fading, Fast fading and Slow fading.
UNIT II MODULATION TECHNIQUES 12
Overview of digital modulation – Linear modulation: Principles of Offset QPSK, π/4 QPSK –
Constant envelope modulation : Minimum Shift Keying, Gaussian Minimum Shift Keying, –
Spread spectrum modulation techniques: DS-SS, FH-SS – Modulation performance in fading and
multipath channels.
UNIT III MULTIPATH MITIGATION TECHNIQUES 12

Equalization : Adaptive equalization , Linear and Non-Linear equalization – Zero Forcing, and
Minimum Mean Square Error Algorithms – Diversity techniques : Micro and Macro diversity –
Diversity combining techniques –Transmit diversity – Error probability in fading channels with
diversity reception – Rake receiver.

UNIT IV MULTI USER SYSTEMS 12


Multiuser channels : Uplink and downlink – Multiple Access : FDMA, TDMA, CDMA, SDMA,
Hybrid techniques – Random Access : ALOHA , Slotted ALOHA , CSMA – Power control –
Uplink/downlink channel capacity – MIMO multiuser systems.

Evolution – 3G Overview : WCDMA/UMTS, 3GPP Network structure – 4G features and
challenges – IMS , LTE system over view and physical channels, WiMax/IEEE802.16–
Advanced broad band wireless access : UWB, AWS – 5G wireless system : Architecture and 5G
deployment.
