6.0 Procedure

6.1 Backfilling around structures

Backfilling will be done with approved material after concrete or masonry is

fully set and carried out in such a way as not to cause undue thrust on any
part of the structure. All spaces between foundation, masonry or concrete and
sites of excavation will be backfilled. Fill material will be spread in layers
manually or by grader in layers of uniform thickness not exceeding 250mm
compacted thickness over the entire width of the structure. Each layer of
approved materials will be thoroughly compacted after necessary watering by
means of small vibratory rollers/plate compactor or thoroughly rammed in
small areas where mechanical means cannot be deployed. Successive layers
will not be placed until the layers under construction have been thoroughly
compacted to the specified requirement of Table 300-2, i: e; 95% and 97% of
MDD at OMC for embankment and sub grade respectively.

6.2 Backfilling Behind abutment and Wing wall

Filling behind abutments and wing walls for all structures without weep-hole,
will be done with approved filling material. The fill material will be deposited in
loose thickness and compacted after necessary watering up to a thickness of
250mm, until the required compaction of 95% & 97% of MDD at OMC achieved,
for embankment & sub grade respectively. Filling will be carried out in equal
layers on each side of the structures to avoid displacement and unequal
pressure.

Where provision of any filter media is specified behind abutment (where weep-
hole exists), filter media as designed will be laid and compacted after
necessary watering up to a compacted thickness of 250mm until 95% & 97% of
MDD at OMC achieved, for embankment & sub grade respectively. The material
used for filter media will conform to the requirement for filter medium spelt
out in clause 2504.2 / 309.3.2.

If impracticable to use conventional rollers, the compaction will be carried out

by mechanical means like small vibratory roller/plate compactor. Care will be
taken to see that, the compaction Equipment does not hit or come too close to
any structural member, so as to cause any damage to them or excessive
pressure against the structure.

7.5 Compaction

Bituminous materials shall be laid and compacted in layers, which enable the
specified thickness, surface level, regularity requirements and compaction to
be achieved.

Compaction of bituminous materials shall commence as soon as possible after

laying. Compaction shall be substantially completed before the temperature
falls below the minimum rolling temperatures stated in the relevant part of
these Specifications. Rolling of the longitudinal joints shall be done
immediately behind the paving operation. After this, rolling shall commence at
the edges and progress towards the centre longitudinally except that on super
elevated and unidirectional cambered portions, it shall progress from the lower
to the upper edge parallel to the centre line of the pavement. Rolling shall
continue until all roller marks have been removed from the surface. All
deficiencies in the surface after laying shall be made good by the attendants
behind the paver, before initial rolling is commenced. The initial or breakdown
rolling shall be done with 8-10 ton dead weight smooth-wheeled rollers. The
intermediate rolling shall be done with 8-10 ton dead weight or vibratory roller
or with a pneumatic tyre roller of 12 to 15 ton weight with a tyre pressure of at
least 5.6 kg/sqcm. The finish rolling shall be done with smooth wheeled

Where compaction is to be determined by density of cores the requirements to

prove the performance of rollers shall apply in order to demonstrate that the
specified density can he achieved. In such cases the Contractor shall nominate
the plant, and the method by which he intends to achieve the specified level of
compaction and finish at temperatures above the minimum specified rolling
temperature. Laying trials shall then demonstrate the acceptability of the
plant and method used. Bituminous materials shall be rolled in a longitudinal
direction, with the driven rolls nearest the paver. The roller shall first compact
material adjacent to joints and then work from the lower to the upper side of
the layer, overlapping on successive passes byat least one-third of the width of
the rear roll or, in the case of a pneumatic tyre roller, at least the nominal
width of 300mm.

In portions with super-elevated and uni-directional camber, after the edge has
been rolled, the roller shall progress from the lower to the upper edge. Rollers
should move at a speed of not more than 5 km per hour. The roller shall not be
permitted to stand on pavement, which has not been fully compacted, and
necessary precautions shall be taken to prevent dropping of oil, grease, petrol

3.3 Trial Stretch

A trial stretch shall be made to the required width. The in-situ density of the
freshly laid concrete shall be determined by sand replacement method by
making 3 density holes at equal distances that diagonally bisects the trial
length, these shall not be made in the strip of 500mm from the edges. The
average of these shall be considered as 100%, and with this the field density of
the regular work shall be compared. The hardened concrete may be cut for 3m
width in the trial length and reversed to check the bottom surface for any
segregation or honey-combing, if found necessary adjustments shall be made
in the mix design.

3.4 Transportation and placing

The plant mix concrete shall be transported by sufficient number of trucks to

ensure continuous, uniform supply of concrete to feed the laying Equipment.
The mix shall be protected from the weather, by covering the tippers/dumpers
with tarpaulin during the transit. The lean concrete shall be laid to the
required widths, grades, camber and thickness with self-propelled, electronic
sensor/mechanical paver. The Equipment shall be capable of laying the
materials in an even manner without segregation, to the specified thickness
after the compaction. The paving machine shall have high amplitude tamping
bars to give good initial compaction.

3.5 Compaction

The compaction shall commence as soon as the concrete laid and leveled to
the full width till there is no further movement under the roller and the surface
is closed. In addition to the number of passes required for compaction, there
shall be a pass without vibration as preliminary pass and another at the end as
final pass. The minimum dry density obtained shall be 97% of that achieved in
trial length, and at a distance of 500mm from edge it shall be 95% of that
achieved in the trial length. The final surface shall be inspected immediately,
and all loose, segregated or defective areas shall be corrected by using fresh
lean concrete. Honeycombed areas, any level/ thickness deficiency and surface
irregularities shall be corrected by concrete with 10mm and down aggregates.
Special care and attention shall be exercised during compaction near joints,

Bentonite slurry shall be pumped to drilling chisel via. Extension rods and
flexible tubes installed. Bentonite powder is to be mixed in the fresh water
tank at least 24 hours prior to start of Pile boring to ensure that Bentonite is
completely dispersed in the water and attains required density to stabilize the
sides of bore hole during drilling.

h. Bentonite used to stabilize the sides of bore hole should be conforming

to requirements. Density of Bentonite solution should be checked during
boring operation to ensure that the density is about 1.05 g/cc.

i. Bentonite slurry is pumped by high-pressure reciprocating

pumps/vertical pump into the bore hole through the cutting chisel and the
same is allowed to overflow the bore hole. The overflow slurry with bored
mud/soil etc. that comes out along with Bentonite slurry is passed through
channels and is collected in sediment tanks where sediments settle and
Bentonite can be re-used. If necessary, the Bentonite may be passed through
the de-sander tank to remove sand particles before it is re-used.

j. Boring will be done up to the founding strata as per drawings/

specifications etc.

k. After the founding stratum is reached, the bore will be flushed by

Bentonite slurry with direct mud circulation chisel/tremie pipe. The pumping
for the flushing will be done by use of mud circulation pump. During flushing,
the chisel will be kept resting on the founding strata to remove all the loose
sediments which might have accumulated on the founding strata. Further, the
flushing operation shall be continued till the consistency of inflowing and out-
flowing slurry is similar.

l. Depth of Pile shall be checked with sounding chain and exact depth
shall be recorded in the Pile report.

After the funnel is filled with concrete, the plate will be removed and concrete
discharged. Thereafter, Concreting will be done in a continuous manner up to
the required level.

g. It should always be ensured that the bottom of the tremie pipe is

minimum 2.0 meters within Concrete to avoid mixing of fresh concrete with
Bentonite slurry.

h. Slump of concrete shall be checked for each batch and recorded in

Concrete Pour report. (Slump of concrete shall be checked at Batching Plant
as well as at pouring location.)

i. Concreting of the pile should be uninterrupted. In the exceptional case

of interruption of concreting; but which can be resumed within 1 or 2 hours,
the tremie shall not be taken out of the concrete. Instead it shall be raised and
lowered slowly, from time to time to prevent the concrete around the tremie
from setting. Concreting should be resumed by introducing a little richer
concrete with a slump of about 200 mm for easy displacement of the partly
set concrete.

j. In case of withdrawal of tremie out of the concrete, either accidentally

or to remove a choke in the tremie, the tremie may be re-introduced in the
following manner to prevent impregnation of laitance or scum lying on the top
of the concrete already deposited in the bore.

k. The tremie shall be gently lowered on to the old concrete with very little
penetration initially. A vermiculate plug should be introduced in the tremie.
Fresh concrete of slump between 150mm - 200 mm should be filled in the
tremie which will push the plug forward and will emerge out of the tremie
displacing the laitance/scum in its way. When tremie is buried by about 60 to
100 cm, concreting may be resumed.

Method Statement for Stone Pitching on slopes

1.0 Purpose

The work shall consist of covering the river side slopes of guide bunds and
road embankments with stone boulders over a layer of granular material which
will act as a filter.

2.0 Materials

2.1 Pitching Stone The size and weight of stone shall conform to Clause
5.3.5.1 of IRC: 89. No stone, shall weigh less than 40 kg. The size of spalls shall
be a minimum of 25 mm and shall be suitable to fill the voids in the pitching

2.2 Filter Medium

The material for the filter shall consist of sand, gravel, crusher dust or GSB to
act as a filter medium, shall be provided underneath the pitching, to prevent
loss of the embankment material and build-up of uplift head on the pitching

The gradation of the filter material shall satisfy the following requirements of
MORTH Cl 2504.2.2

3.0 Procedure

Before laying the pitching and construction of toe wall the sides of banks shall
be trimmed to the required slope and profiles put up by means of line and pegs
at intervals of 3m to ensure regular straight work and a uniform slope
throughout. Depressions shall be filled and thoroughly compacted.

The filter granular material shall be laid over the prepared base and suitably
compacted to the thickness specified on the drawings.

The lowest course of pitching shall be started from the toe wall built-up in
courses upwards

The toe wall shall be in dry rubble masonry (uncoursed) conforming to Clause
1405.3, of these Specifications in case of dry rubble pitching. It shall be in
nominal mix cement concrete (M 15) conforming to Clause 1704 of MORTH in
case of cement concrete block pitching.

The stone pitching shall commence in a trench over the toe of the slope. Stone
shall be placed by hand to the required length, thickness and depth
conforming to the drawings. Stones shall be set normal to the slope and
placed so that the largest dimension is perpendicular to the face of the slope,
unless each dimension is greater than the specified thickness of pitching.

The largest stones shall be placed in the bottom courses and for use as
headers for subsequent courses.

The stone of flat stratified nature shall be placed with the principle bedding
plane normal to the slope. The pattern of laying shall be such that the joints
are broken and voids are minimum by packing with spalls of the proper size
and wedged in with hammers to ensure tight packing.

When two or more layers of stones must be laid to obtain the design thickness
of pitching, dry masonry shall be used and shall be well bonded.

4.0 Safety & Environment

While working Safety & Environment Procedure shall be followed as per

approved EHS Manual
