Online Lesson:
I. Topic/s: Continuity of a Function at a Number
II. Learning Targets:
At the end of the lesson, I can be able to:
1. recall evaluating limit of a function
2. prove that a given function is continuous at a given point based on the properties of
continuous functions
3. tell whether a graph of a function is continuous or discontinuous on a given interval

III. Daily Routine

1. Prayer
2. Checking of attendance
IV. Lesson Proper
1. The teacher presents different graphs of function and asks the students to tell whether it is
continuous based on how they understand the word.
2. After classifying the graphs, the teacher asks the students on what are the characteristics of
a continuous function.
3. From there, the teacher states the formal definition of a function continuous at a number.
4. The students prove that a given function is continuous at a given point based on the
properties of continuous functions

This module discusses about proving that a given function is continuous at a given
point based on the properties of continuous functions.

CONTINUITY OF A FUNCTION

Definition of a Function Continuous at a Number

The function 𝒇 is said to be continuous at the number 𝒂 if and only if the following three
conditions are satisfied:

(i). 𝒇(𝒂) exists ;

(ii). 𝐥𝐢𝐦 𝒇(𝒙) exists;
𝒙→𝒂
(iii). 𝐥𝐢𝐦 𝒇(𝒙) = 𝒇(𝒂)
𝒙→𝒂

If one or more of these three conditions fails to hold at 𝒂, the function 𝒇 is said to be
discontinuous at 𝒂 .

Example 1

Determine if the function is continuous at x=1 .

𝒙𝟐 − 𝟏
𝒇( 𝒙 ) =
𝒙−𝟏

i) The function is undefined when x=1:

𝑥2 − 1
𝑓 (𝑥 ) =
𝑥−1

12 − 1 𝟎
𝑓(1) = =
1−1 𝟎

Function f is, therefore, discontinuous at 1.

Example 2

i) It is defined at x=1, because h(1)=2

ii ) But at x=1, limit does not exist.
(The function approaches different values "2" from the left, and"1" from the right)

It doesn’t satisfy condition ii and so the function is not continuous.

Example 3

Let f be defined by

2𝑥 + 3 𝑖𝑓 𝑥 ≠ 1
𝑓 (𝑥 ) = {
2 𝑖𝑓 𝑥 = 1

Determine if the function is continuous at x=1. Let’s investigate the conditions stated in the
definition.

(i). 𝑓(1) = 2
(ii). lim 𝑓(𝑥) = 5
𝑥→1

(iii). lim 𝑓(𝑥) ≠ 𝑓(1)

𝑥→1

Conditions (i) and (ii) are satisfied but condition (iii) is not satisfied. Function f is, therefore,
discontinuous at 1.

Example 3. Determine if the following function is continuous at x=-2.

i.) f(-2) = (-2)2 + 2(-2) = 4-4 = 0

ii)
The left-hand limit The right-hand limit

= (-2)2 + 2(-2) = (-2)3 - 6(-2)

=4-4 = -8 + 12
=0 =4

Since the left- and right-hand limits are not equal, then does not exist,
and condition ii.) is not satisfied. Thus, function f is NOT continuous at x=-2 .

Example 4. Determine if the function is continuous at x=-1 .

i.) .

ii. )

iii.) ,

All three conditions are satisfied, and f is continuous at x=3 .
