VISITING THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA: FLORIDA

Coast to coast tour

From Daytona Beach to Tampa Bay
A.
Daytona Beach is located on the east coast of central Florida, and it is mostly known for motorsports. The Daytona
500 is a 500-mile-long race which over the years has really put the city on the map. It has been happening annually
since 1959 and regularly attracts over 100,000 spectators. Many of those fans will then head to the beaches after
the race as Daytona has over 37km of white sandy beaches for motor fans to relax on.
B.
About an hour away from Daytona is the city of Orlando which is home to the super-popular Disney World. It first
opened in 1971 and every year for the last 50 years, millions of visitors have arrived at the doors of the Magic
Kingdom waiting to be charmed by Mickey and co. The park claims to have something for everyone, but it is
clearly aimed at the younger side of the market. So if this gigantic theme park gets a bit much for you and you
want a change of pace, then how about skimming across the famous Florida waters?
C.
Not far from Orlando, you can get a close-up view of the wonderful Florida Everglades while kicking back on an
airboat travelling at speeds of up to 60 km/h across the water. You will be able to witness exotic animals, areas of
land that are completely untouched by humans and it is the only place in the world where you can see crocodiles
and alligators living together which is surely going to be something that you won’t forget in a hurry.
D.
For lovers of architecture, make your next stop the city of Lakeland where you will be treated to countless examples
of early-1900s architecture. If you prefer your design a little more modern then the city also possesses a number
of buildings that came from the pen of Frank Lloyd Wright, often described as America’s greatest architect. On
the campus of Florida Southern College, you will discover 13 wonderful structures designed by Wright that were
built in 1938 and give you a glimpse of a true American great.
E.
As your journey comes to an end, you will find yourself on the Gulf coast and in the city of Tampa. Tampa is a city
that is known for its cultural offerings and its amazing tropical weather. For finances it now relies quite heavily on
tourism, but it began life as a military centre in the 19th century and was also as a base for the cigar industry in
1886.
F.
Many of the tourists in Tampa spend a day at Busch Gardens- a quite uniquely African and Asian-themed
amusement park that opened in 1959. It combines the thrill of rollercoasters with the world of animals as there
are over 12,000 on site for you to witness while you’re upside down on the loop the loop*.
G.
Ybor City- a neighbourhood in Tampa makes a nice little stop for your final day of your trip. Founded in the 1880s
by Vicente Martinez-Ybor, a producer of cigars in the area, it became the home for Cubans, Spaniards and Italians
all hoping to make a living, and their influence can clearly be felt today. The downtown area is full of cool little
independent cafes, cosy little Italian restaurants, and delicious tapas bars. So, take a seat, sit back and watch the
world go by as you reflect on your fantastic Florida adventure.

Look at the two texts below, each one is about a cool place you can visit in Florida. Try to complete
each one with the vocabulary in the box. Once you have read your text you must then summarise
your paragraph for your partner.

When you are summarising it, try and use different vocabulary, as this will develop your ability to
paraphrase.

A. Venetian pool

clearwater emptied quarry

1
Venetian pool is a seriously public pool which is located near the
city of Coral Gables. The pool is special in many ways and is definitely worth a visit. The pool itself
2
was dug out of a coral rock at some point in the twenties and is
3
by wonderful white palm trees.

Another amazing thing about the pool is the fact that it is the largest
4 5
pool in the USA and it is and
refilled every single day, which must be quite a job. If you need some time out of the water, then
around the pool there are little buildings which have been constructed with
6
roofs, giving the whole place a feeling of a time in the past.
