The employee Joe Smith will enhance his soft skills in the areas of communication, time management,
planning and prioritizing, and a vertical mindset to better communicate to his team and to be a more
effective and efficient leader in his role. As a result, Joe will be able to lead his team to complete projects
more effectively and efficiently as well as increase overall business acumen.

The employee Joe Smith will become a subject-matter-expert in Microsoft Office and will demonstrate
his expertise by leading Microsoft Office group trainings in-house with other project managers to
increase their overall knowledge, skills and abilities in utilizing this program.

Purchase-Or-Design Decision

To obtain the training objectives set-out above, a thorough analysis was conducted to determine
whether the training programs should be outsourced/purchased or designed in-house. The following
was considered in the analysis: the cost of outsourcing versus in-house design, time savings for design
and training purposes, the number of employees that need to be trained as well as the extent to which
future employees will need to be trained in the same areas, and the expertise in-house for the content
as well as the design of the training programs (Saks and Haccoun, 2016). As a result of this analysis, I
propose to outsource and purchase the necessary training programs for Joe Smith’s training as it would
be more economical, and the programs required are rather generic in nature and do not require
organizational specific content.

Training Programs/Plan

I recommend Joe Smith to be enrolled in the “Communication for Results” in-class training program
through PMC Training. This is a two-day workshop that covers a variety of topics relating to
communication, including basic communication principles, communication styles, barriers, active
listening and body language (PMC Training, 2019). This communication training will benefit Joe in several
ways, first he will have a better understand of the different communication styles and mediums as well
as when to use them to be effective. Second, he will have a better understanding of the different types of
communication barriers and how to overcome them; and third, Joe will learn how to be more assertive
in his communication style, ensuring that he is communicating clearer and more precise.

In addition, I recommend Joe Smith to enroll in “Managing Your Workload: How to Prioritize When
Everything is Important” and the “Effective Time Management” online seminars offered through
Trainup.com (2019). Both seminars are online, instructor-taught workshops that have a variety of start
dates to choose from. Both seminars will help Joe understand how to plan, prioritize and manage him
time so that he can increase his and his team’s efficiency and be a more effective leader.

“Mindset for Excellence” through Dynamic Achievement is another training program that I would
recommend Joe Smith to be enrolled in. This program can be offered both in-class and online and
focuses on the 14 levels of awareness and how they shape our thoughts, feelings and actions, self-
awareness and self-governance and how to develop an excellence sustainment plan (Dynamic
Achievement, 2019). This program will be the most beneficial for Joe as it will increase his overall
emotional intelligence resulting in increased engagement, better self-awareness and increased
collaboration and cocreation with his team.

For Joe Smith to become a subject-matter-expert in Microsoft Office, I would recommend that he be
enrolled in the 2016 Microsoft Office online course through Universal Class (2019). This is an online

certificate program that covers all major programs of Microsoft Office. Joe would benefit greatly from
taking this certificate program as it would make him a subject-matter-expert in the program – increasing
his overall efficiency as a leader. Further, it would also aid in his development as the company could have
Joe Smith teach other project managers his acquired skills from taking this program.

If budget constraints do not allow for all training to take place this current fiscal year, then I would highly
recommend that Joe Smith complete the Mindset for Excellence training as this training encompasses
the majority of the performance gaps that Joe needs to focus on and, as mentioned by Dynamic
Excellence (2019), this training increases overall engagement, commitment, improves communication,
increases resilience in managing change and workplace challenges and results in overall better work
performance; thus, very beneficial to Joe and the organization. If room in the budget persists, then the
second program that I would recommend Joe Smith taking would be the Microsoft Office training as this
training will help Joe become a more efficient project manager.

Training Methods

Regarding training methods, we would use a variety of different types – both on- and off-the-job. As can
be seen from the training plan above, the off-the-job training methods that would be used include
lectures/seminars, discussions and behavior modelling. On-the-job, we would coach Joe on his soft skills
and Microsoft Office capabilities as well as provide Joe with a mentor to help grow, develop and close
some of Joe’s performance gaps.

Finally, we would have Joe actively practice what he has learned in order to build on his capability and
build confidence in his newly acquired skills. He would practice his soft skills on a regular basis and will
be coached/mentored by a senior leader. Further, we can have Joe actively practice his newly acquired
Microsoft Office skills by having him teach and mentor others.
