Refugee Blues
By Auden
When the council asked the pair for their passports, they replied that the passports had expired. The
council mocked and shouted at them that with expired passports they were as good as dead.
However, when they approached a committee to renew the passports, they were asked to come the
following year. Later, the poet went to a public meeting where he heard the open protests of the
citizens of the land for allowing refugees like him into the country. The meeting was held by Hitler
demanding the execution of all Jews.
The poet sees various animals and envies them for not being involved with politicians as they were
not human beings. He tells his companion about a huge building that he saw which could actually
accommodate them but did not. As he stood on the plains, he saw a large number of soldiers
approaching them through the snow to take them to sentence them to death
