Drilling methods

Duckbill
Duckbill drilling is part of a jetted drilling assembly that has a tapered plate in various sizes as the
steering / drilling tool. This method works best in very soft or low density subsurface conditions such as
muskeg or soft clays.

Trihawk
Trihawk drilling is part of a jetted drilling assembly that has a specialty bit in various sizes as the steering
/ drilling tool. These bits are designed for multiple subsurface conditions. In-Line Drilling HDD has found
the Trihawk #5 to be very successful in clay, sand, cobble, sandstone, shale and mudstone.

Air hammer
Air hammer drilling is part of a specialty drilling assembly that is adapted to operate a hammer style drill
bit in various sizes as the steering / drilling tool. In-Line Drilling HDD has found the air hammer to be very
successful in sandstone, shale, mudstone and bedrock. The air hammer system uses a very small
amount of an environmentally friendly vegetable based oil mixed with a small amount of water. This
system works well in sensitive areas where fluid releases are a concern.

Mud motor
Mud motor drilling is part of a specialty drilling assembly that is adapted to operate a downhole mud
motor style drill bit in various sizes as the steering / drilling tool. In-Line Drilling HDD has found the mud
motor to be very successful in sandstone, shale, mudstone and bedrock. The mud motor system uses a

fluid recycle system to recycle the drilling fluids to minimize the high volumes of fluids that are needed for
this method. The mud motor system works well in areas with consistently stable hard ground formations.

Year: 2015
Location: Gordondale, Alberta
Pipe size: 12”
Drilling Rig: Vermeer 80x100
Ground conditions: Reactive swelling clay
Meters drilled: 3068m
This project was completed in 27 days which involved an organized bore execution plan to assist
with the mobilization of the equipment and crews. This project was originally planned by our
customer using two drilling rigs however, after some consultation we believed we could accomplish
the project with one rig at substantial savings to our client. The project was successfully completed
on schedule and under budget with the expected savings.

Year: 2014
Location: Fox Creek, Alberta
Pipe size: 4”
Drilling Rig: Vermeer 80x100
Ground conditions: Bedrock
Meters drilled: 440m
This project was completed in 6 days which involved the use of the air hammer setup and hole
opener reamer for the solid bedrock conditions. During this project we experienced a significant
engine failure on our drill (Failed head gasket and bent valves) but due to our extensive in house
mechanical experience we were able to replace all of the parts in the field without having delays of
mobilizing another drill to site. Our drill was down from 4:30pm and was ready to drill at 7:00am the
very next day, which resulted in no downtime to our client.

These are a few examples of projects that we were proud to be a part of.
