International Case Study
Project Name : California Academy of Sciences
Architects : Renzo Piano Building Workshop, Stantec Architecture
Location : Concourse Dr/Academy of Sciences, San Francisco, CA 94118, United States
Category : University
Project Year : 2008
Area : 37000 Sq. m

Concept:
“ Was not only to make an Academy building but a building with a feel of Nature and Life in itself”
The selection of Renzo Piano fueled the Academy’s high aspirations for the museum’s architecture and solidified its
commitment to creating a sustainable building. Piano’s design began with a living roof concept, which he described as
“[lifting] up a piece of the park and [putting] a building underneath.”9 The roof would feature a field and seven rolling hills
to mimic San Francisco’s landscape. The roof would be visible from the Music Concourse, an open-air plaza within Golden
Gate Park.
Project Objective

The Academy’s requirements were far more challenging than any leasing requirement we have witnessed in San
Francisco’s history, including the need to:
•House 25 million “things” from the Academy’s world-renowned collections;
•Address the various zoning, space and environmental requirements for the Academy’s collections, including lab
space, water supply, storage, drainage and containment, proper fire suppression systems, heavy floor loading capacity,
hazardous material containment and ambient temperature control;
•Build temporary public and private spaces, including a temporary Steinhart Aquarium;
•Accommodate 300 researchers and related staff;
•Showcase a priceless library of 12,000+ books and specimens; and
•Ensure that the lease dovetailed with the projected completion of the new facility in Golden Gate Park, allowing
the Academy to phase out of their temporary building on a floor by floor basis, as areas of their new facility were
completed.

Natural Ventilation & Lighting
Climate-control Strategy (Natural Ventilation)

Too Warm
No windows or piazza = No movement of air
No green roof = Increase heat loss from roof

Too Warm
Piazza = Vertical movement of air
No Windows = No lateral movement of air
No Green roof = Increase heat loss from roof

Too Cool
Piazza = Vertical movement of air
Windows = lateral movement of air
No Green roof = Minimize heat loss from roof

Just Right
Piazza = Vertical movement of air
Windows = lateral movement of air
No Green roof = Minimize heat loss from roof
Spheres = Manipulates movement of air to
create comfortable microclimates
