SET A

Subject: - Strength of Materials

1. Two forces are applied to the bracket BCD as shown. Figure 1 (a) Knowing that the control
rod AB is to be made of a steel having an ultimate normal stress of 600 MPa, determine the
diameter of the rod for which the factor of safety with respect to failure will be 3.3. (b) The
pin at C is to be made of a steel having an ultimate shearing stress of 350 MPa. Determine
the diameter of the pin C for which the factor of safety with respect to shear will also be 3.3.
(c) Determine the required thickness of the bracket supports at C knowing that the allowable
bearing stress of the steel used is 300 MPa.

[5]

2. A rod consisting of two cylindrical portions AB and BC is restrained at both ends as shown
in figure 2. Portion AB is made of steel (Es = 200 GPa, αs = 11.7 *10-6 /0 C) and portion BC is
made of brass (Eb = 105 Gpa, αb = 20.9 *10-6 /0 C). Knowing that the rod is initially
unstressed, determine the compressive force induced in ABC when there is a temperature rise
of 500 C.
[5]
3. The solid rod AB has a diameter dAB = 60 mm and is made of a steel for which the allowable
shearing stress is 85 MPa. The pipe CD, which has an outer diameter of 90 mm and a wall
thickness of 6 mm, is made of an aluminum for which the allowable shearing stress is 54
MPa. Determine the largest torque T that can be applied at A. [5]

4. Derive the relations among load, shear, and bending moment in the analysis and design of a
beam. [5]

SET B

Subject: - Strength of Materials

1. The load P applied to a steel rod is distributed to a timber support by an annular washer. The
diameter of the rod is 22 mm and the inner diameter of the washer is 25 mm, which is
slightly larger than the diameter of the hole. Determine the smallest allowable outer diameter
d of the washer, knowing that the axial normal stress in the steel rod is 35 MPa and that the
average bearing stress between the washer and the timber must not exceed 5 MPa. [5]

2. For the steel truss (E = 200 GPa) and loading shown, determine the deformations of members
AB and AD, knowing that their cross-sectional areas are 2400 mm2 and 1800 mm2,
respectively. [5]
3. A bar having the cross section shown has been formed by securely bonding brass and
aluminum stock. Using the data given below, determine the largest permissible bending
moment when the composite bar is bent about a horizontal axis. [5]

4. State and explain the moment area theorem to find slop and deflection of a beam. [5]

SET C

Subject: - Strength of Materials

1. Link AB, of width b = 50 mm and thickness t = 6 mm, is used to support the end of a
horizontal beam. Knowing that the average normal stress in the link is 2140 MPa, and that
the average shearing stress in each of the two pins is 80 MPa, determine (a) the diameter d of
the pins, (b) the average bearing stress in the link. [5]

2. Knowing that for the cast iron link shown the allowable stresses are 30 MPa in tension and
120 MPa in compression, determine the largest force P which can be applied to the link.

[5]
3. Both portions of the rod ABC are made of an aluminum for which E = 70 GPa. Knowing that
the magnitude of P is 4 kN, determine (a) the value of Q so that the deflection at A is zero,
(b) the corresponding deflection of B. [5]

4. What are Principal Planes and Maximum Shearing stresses? Describe using Mohr’s Circle.

SET D

Subject: - Strength of Materials

1. In the steel structure shown, a 6-mm-diameter pin is used at C and 10-mm-diameter pins are
used at B and D. The ultimate shearing stress is 150 MPa at all connections, and the ultimate
normal stress is 400 MPa in link BD. Knowing that a factor of safety of 3.0 is desired,
determine the largest load P that can be applied at A. Note that link BD is not reinforced
around the pin holes.
[5]
2. A 500-mm-long, 16-mm-diameter rod made of a homogenous, isotropic material is observed
to increase in length by 300 mm, and to decrease in diameter by 2.4 mm when subjected to
an axial 12-kN load. Determine the modulus of elasticity and Poisson’s ratio of the material.
[5]

3. The aluminum rod BC (G = 26 GPa) is bonded to the brass rod AB (G = 39 GPa). Knowing
that each rod is solid and has a diameter of 12 mm, determine the angle of twist (a) at B, (b)
at C. [5]

4. Derive an equation of elastic curve for a beam under transverse loading and equation for
deflection using integration method. [5]
