Date of Assessment: hand out 2 September, oral presentation on 14th or 21st October at 3G02 (no
online presentations)
Subject name: Visual Theory 2 (Africa in Context)
Subject code: VTH206D
Total marks: 50
Assignment 2: Contemporary African Art

Make sure you understand and follow EVERY instruction on this assignment

This assessment consists of the following:

1. An oral presentation on the 14th or 21st of October (read page 3 and 4 to find out which date you
will present on).
2. Submission of the written version (400-450 words) of your presentation on Brightspace by 11
October 2022 in pdf or word.

You need to complete both tasks in order to pass.

Task: Choose one artist (see full list on the next page) covered in the Contemporary African Art unit,
research the artist and analyze one artwork you have selected in terms of its contemporary social /
cultural / historical background and explain the meanings thereof. You will be given 3 to 4 minutes each
to present. You need to specify the name of the artist, title of artwork, medium and year.

Note that this is a research project, you cannot use ANY of the artworks discussed in class in your
assignment, and you cannot use the class presentations as a reference, meaning you cannot quote or
paraphrase from them. Failure to not follow this instruction will lead an automatic fail.

Although you will receive a mark solely for your oral presentation, your written version will be your only
proof of submission, consequently it will be submitted to turn-it in for plagiarism checks, and any score
above 24% will be an automatic 0 for the oral presentation. The written version will also be the only
format you will receive feedback on.

Assessment Criteria:
Content:
 Originality of presentation: Although you 20
are expected to read other peoples
information (except the class
presentations), the question that has to be
answered is ‘what is your intellectual
contribution in your own presentation’.

 Depth and detail of analysis. 20

Verbally articulating your presentation. 10
Total 50
Failure to submit the written version of the presentation by 23:59 on 11 October will lead to a -5%
deduction of your final mark, each day until 15 October after this date it will be an automatic 0, even if
you presented.

The only valid reasons for not presenting on your designated day are a doctor’s letter or certified copy
of a death certificate, no other reason will be accepted. Presentations begin no later than 10:10 from
the top of the list, if you are late and did not get to present by 12:00 it’s your own problem (0).
