4.0 PREVAILING WEATHER CONDITIONS
The site is situated in Abu Dhabi where a hot arid climate prevails. A hot arid climate is one where evaporation
exceeds precipitation - such as rain and dewfall. This climate regime produces characteristic hot desert
terrains. Average annual rainfall may only be a few centimeters (even only a few millimeters in some parts)
which usually occurs seasonally and sometimes only from a single cloudburst. Summer shade temperatures
are frequently in excess 40°C and humidity may be around 100% near the coast. The contrast between
maximum night and day temperatures and between night and day humidity is often great. Strong persistent
winds are normal in many areas. This unfavorable climate imposes adverse conditions on the concrete
structures, such as:

- High temperature and high seasonal changes.

- High humidity and high change in relative humidity.
- Strong drying winds.
- Condensation at night.
- Windborne salt-laden dust.
- High solar radiation.

5.0 GENERAL GEOLOGY OF THE AREA

The geology of the United Arab Emirates, the available geological literature indicates that U.A.E. coastline
and the floor of the Arabian Gulf mainly consist of extensive carbonate sediments, which is mostly of
Pleistocene or recent in age. With the exception of mountainous regions shared with Oman in the north-east,
the country is relatively low-lying, with near surface geology dominated by Quaternary to late Pleistocene
age, mobile Aeolian dune sands, and sabkha/ evaporates deposits.
The Arabian Peninsula as a whole shows two main geological provinces: 1) The Arabian Shield in the west
which is composed mostly of Precambrian igneous and metamorphic rocks, and 2) The Arabian platform that
is a vast area to the east of the Arabian shield including Qatar and the Emirates.
The geologically stable Arabian plate is separated from the unstable Iranian Fold Belt by the Arabian Gulf. It
is believed that a tilting of the entire Arabian Plate occurred during the Permian period, resulting in uplift in
southern Yemen, and depression to the north-east. Crustal deformations and igneous intrusions occurred in
the north-east as a result of this movement. Subsequent tectonic movements, peripheral to the folding of the
Iranian Zagros Range, during the Plio-Pleistocene epoch, probably contributed to the formation of both the
Arabian Gulf depression, and the mountains regions shared by the United Arab Emirates and Oman in the
north-east.
The near surface geology of the western region of Abu Dhabi is dominated by Aeolian dune sand, sabkha
and evaporates deposits of Holocene to Pleistocene age. These deposits typically comprise fine grained silty
calcareous sand, which is commonly dense and variably cemented beneath a shallow, loose, normally
consolidated mobile layer. Although variable, the degree of cementation generally increases with depth, such
that the variably cemented sand grades to predominantly calcareous sandstone. Very silty, gypsiferous
sabkha and evaporate layers occur occasionally within the Aeolian sand deposits.

GR-83953-01 (30thSeptember 2022) Page 2 of 25

Although surficial sabkha deposits are found throughout the coastal belt of the Arabian Gulf, and far inland in
the western and southern parts of the United Arab Emirates, Sabkha is an Arabic name used to describe
relatively fine grained, hyper saline, silt and sand deposits, which are commonly saturated with brine, and salt
encrusted. These deposits form in natural evaporation pans where saline water, introduced by sea invasion
or elevated saline groundwater, is able to accumulate at or near ground surface level, assisted by capillary
action.

6.0 FIELD WORK

The subsurface investigation performed at the site during the period of 06th July 2022 to 27th July 2022. The
field works were consisted of the following:
 Drilling of Nine (09) boreholes (BH-19, BH-23, BH-35, BH-36, BH-37, BH-38, BH-39, BH-41&BH-42)
to a depth of 20.0m and One (01) borehole (BH-40) to a depth of 25.0m below the existing ground
level (EGL) with Standard Penetration Test and Sampling.
All of the works were performed by experienced Lonestar geotechnical personnel under the supervision of a
suitably experienced geotechnical engineer. The works were performed in general accordance with the British
Standard BS 5930:2015 “Code of practice for site investigations”.
The field test results, method of drilling, depth of samples, ground water depth, reference number of borehole,
lithological description of the materials, and other drilling and project information are present in log of boring
in Appendix B.

6.1 Exploratory Borehole

Prior to opening the boreholes, inspection pit was excavated manually up to 1.5m depth from the existing
ground level (EGL) to check the underground utilities. Nine (09) boreholes (BH-19, BH-23, BH-35, BH-36,
BH-37, BH-38, BH-39, BH-41 & BH-42) to a depth of 20.0m and One (01) borehole (BH-40) to a depth of
25.0m were drilled beneath the existing ground level. Drilling was performed by using rotary drilling rigs. The
boreholes were advanced through soil deposits using rotary wash boring techniques. Rotary coring
techniques were used in underlying rock formations.

Standard Penetration Tests (SPTs) were conducted at regular intervals within the soil layers in order to
estimate relative soil densities, and obtain soil samples for classification purposes. Test intervals within soil
layers were carried at 1.0 m intervals and at every change in strata to the end of the boreholes or encounter
of bedrock.

SPTs were conducted in accordance with the British Standard BS 1377: Part 9:1990, “Methods of test for
soils for civil engineering purposes”. The test involves driving a 50mm external diameter thick walled tube
(split spoon sampler) into the bottom of the borehole with successive blows of a 63.5kg hammer falling freely
through 760mm. The sampler is driven through 6 intervals of 75mm and the number of blows required to
penetrate each interval is recorded. The initial 150mm is intended to ensure “seating” of the sampler such
that it penetrates beyond the zone of influence of any soil disturbance at the base of the borehole. The
aggregate number of blows to drive the sampler over the final 300mm is termed the “N” value, and is
considered indicative of the in-situ relative soil density.

GR-83953-01 (30thSeptember 2022) Page 3 of 25

In very dense and/or cemented soil layers it is often not possible to ensure complete penetration of the SPT
sampler, due to driving refusal, or the risk of damage to sampling equipment as a result of hard driving. The
practical driving limit is of the order of 50 blows for a penetration of 300mm.Where a penetration of 300mm
was not achieved, due to the density or degree of cementation of the deposits encountered, the number of
blows and distance driven are recorded on the Borehole Logs.
Disturbed SPT and bulk soil samples collected during drilling were retained in sealed, labeled plastic bags.
Groundwater samples were also retained in sealed, labeled plastic bottles. All the soil samples recovered
were then transported to our main laboratory in Mussafah for further examinations and testing. Careful
attention was paid during boring for the existence of groundwater. Groundwater levels were recorded after
completion of each borehole. The water depth observation is recorded on the borehole log.

The test results are shown on the boring log at the respective test depths. Interpretation of the SPT test results
can be found in the Legend to logs of field tests (App. B).

6.2 Soil Electrical Resistivity Test

Electrical resistivity testing is conducted using Wenner electrode configuration. The testing is conducted using
portable CRM AQUAMETER testing apparatus. The AUTO CRM AQUAMETER, microprocessor based
testing equipment, passes a Direct Current (DC), of known value, through the ground via two current
electrodes (C1 and C2), and measures the potential difference between two additional voltage electrodes (P1
and P2) at intermediate points. The four electrodes are driven approximately 250mm into the ground, in a
line, such that the array is symmetrical. The depth of influence on the test result is approximately 1/3 of the
distance between C1 and C2. Measurements are made for a range of electrode spacing to provide results
applicable to a range of depths.

GR-83953-01 (30thSeptember 2022) Page 4 of 25

The current electrode spacing may range up to about 5m. For each test location, measurements are usually
taken with electrode configurations arranged in two orthogonal directions (eg. E-W and N-S orientations).
The apparent soil resistivity is given by:
Apparent Resistivity, ρ = 2πa.R
Where π = 3.142
R = measured resistance between potential electrodes
a = electrode spacing
The computation and interpretation shall be carried out in accordance with BS 1377, P9 and complying
with the project specification.

Graphical representation of apparent resistivity against electrode spacing for individual test locations is
presented in Appendix B- “Logs of Field Tests”.

7.0 LABORATORY TESTING

A program of laboratory testing was performed on selected soil samples obtained during the field work. Test
results have been used to assist with classifications, and determinations of relevant physical properties of soil
samples. Chemical tests were also performed on selected soil and water samples recovered from borehole.
These results have been used to determine the corrosivity of soil. In general, laboratory testing has been
performed in accordance with British Standard procedures. Laboratory test results are presented in Appendix
D.

8.0 GROUND CONDITIONS
8.1 Subsurface Condition

The boreholes drilled shows that there are general similarities and continuities of the subsurface materials, in
spite of some local variations. Classification of the soil has been conducted according to BS 5930:2015. The
tables given in the legend to boring log in Appendix B were used to describe the relative density of the soils.

A generalized subsurface profile has been constructed and is presented in Appendix C. Further information
about the materials encountered can be obtained from the logs of boring presented in Appendix B.

The borehole observations and test results, generally confirm the anticipated geology. However, there is a
slight variation of the thickness and relative densities of the soil. Sub-surface profile with relative densities of
the soil. Descriptions at different depths found in the borehole is given in the following Table 5:

8.2 Ground Water
At the time of investigation, the ground water table was not encountered up to the depth of exploration below
the existing ground level (EGL). However, ground water table is subjected to tidal and weather seasonal
variations or by artificial induced effects. Therefore, reconfirmation is recommended prior to any works related
to the ground water regime. The effect of tidal variation on established ground water table could be in a range
up to 2.0m. And, it is recommended that, this magnitude of variation shall be taken into consideration from
the existing ground level during structural analysis and design.
8.3 Standpipe Piezometer Readings
In order to monitor groundwater levels during and after the fieldwork standpipe piezometers was installed in
each borehole. The standpipe piezometer was comprised of 2” uPVC pipe, slotted over the lower end and
installed and surrounded by fine gravel to about 0.5m above the slotted section. The section below and the
above the filter was capped by a 0.5m thick bentonite seal and the remainders of the borehole (above and
below the bentonite seal) backfilled with a grout using a bentonite / cement grout. The top of each standpipe
protruded approximately 300mm above the surrounding ground level and fitted with an outer case with top
for protection and ease of access.

9.0 ENGINEERING DISCUSSION AND RECOMMENDATIONS

The purpose of the investigation was to evaluate the sub-surface conditions with respect to the design of
foundations for the proposed development. It is understood that the proposal is construction of Over Head
Lines (OHL) for 400kV OHL Works for Transco. The ground conditions revealed in the subsurface profile
indicate that bored cast-in-situ piles can safely carry the proposed structure. The load carrying strata must
be competent to sustain the compression, tension and horizontal loading conditions. Pile length shall be not
less than 6.00m below the natural ground level as per Transco Standard. Pile load tests are considered the
most satisfactory method to assess the carrying capacity of a pile.

The Value of coefficient of horizontal soil stress, Ks can be adopted as 0.62.

10.1 Pile Foundations

The ultimate axial pile capacity has been estimated based on the established design methods. The axial
pile capacity (in compression) is considered as the combination of load resisted in skin friction along the
pile shaft and end bearing capacity. However, the end bearing has been neglected in soil and extremely
weak (UCS value <1MPa) rock strata in this report. The consideration of end bearing capacity may be
the pile designer’s discretion and the pile capacity shall be verified with Pile load test. The uplift
capacities were taken in to account by considering the skin friction alone.
Pile load tests are considered the most satisfactory method to assess the carrying capacity of a pile. It
is therefore recommended that such tests be performed either on specially constructed piles installed
before the start of the general construction works or during the foundation construction period.
The formulas adopted for End bearing and skin friction are as follows
Unit skin friction of pile in cohesion less soil is given by:
Qu = ½ Ks σvo tan δ As
σvo : Effective overburden pressure
Ks : Coefficient of horizontal soil stress
δ : Angle of friction between pile and soil which can be adopted
as the angle of internal friction (Ф)
As : surface area of shaft in contact with the soil.
Skin friction for the portion of pile embedded in Rock, has been calculated using the expression after
Williams and Pells: fs =   quc As
α - reflects variations in the intact strength of the rock
β - Adjustment factor to account for seams of softer material in the rock
quc - unconfined compressive strength of the rock
As- Surface Area of shaft in contact with rock.
Ultimate end bearing resistance of pile in Rock is given by:
Qb=2 N quc Ab
N- Bearing Capacity Factor=tan2(45+/2),=angle of internal friction
Ab- Area of the base of the pile
quc - unconfined compressive strength of the rock
Unit end bearing resistance of pile in cohesion less soil is given by:
Qb=Nq σvo Ab
Nq- Bearing Capacity Factor

The soil and rock parameters used for pile capacity calculation are as per Table 9.
 The self-weight of the pile has not been considered for the evaluation of both compression & uplift capacity.
 All piles capacities provided in this report are for individual piles only.
 The pile loads specified above are based on geotechnical considerations only and should be limited on the basis of
structural capacity of pile.
 The pile cut-off level has been considered as 2m below EGL at every borehole locations.

11.0 CONCRETE FOR FOUNDATIONS

Ten (10) soil samples were tested for the chemical analysis. The sulphate content reported as (SO4) of the tested
soil samples were ranging from 0.020g/L to 0.130g/L. Furthermore, the chloride content reported as (Cl) for the
tested soil samples were ranging from 0.01% to 0.04%. The pH values of the tested samples were ranging from
8.9 to 9.3 (Please refer to the appendix D for chemical analysis summary).

As per BS 8500-1:2006 & BRE Special Digest 1- 2005, with reference to the sulphate results of soil and ground
water, the site has been classified as tabulated:

While considering the significance of chloride ingression, recommendations made in CIRIA Publication 2002
“Guide to the construction of reinforced concrete in the Arabian Peninsula” has to be referred. With this in view
and as per table No. 5.1 & 5.2 of CIRIA C577-2002 following site classification and concrete recommendations
shall be noted.

Exposure condition d (iii)

3
Minimum cement content for 20 mm aggregates (Kg/m ) 320 to 400
Maximum water/cement ratio 0.42
Minimum cover for reinforcement 75 mm
As per CIRIA SP31, concrete containing pulverized fuels ash (Pfa), ground granulated blast furnace slag (ggbs)
and silica fumes (sf) are highly resistant to penetration by chlorides due to their increased binding capacity and
refined pore structure. Also, when resistance is needed against both, sulphate and chlorides, concrete may need
to be protected from the soil and groundwater with a waterproofing membrane or tanking and a compromise has
to be made on the type of cement to be used, generally, a cement containing at least 3.5% but not more than
9.0% C3A is preferred. Each situation should be considered on its merit.

11.1 Summary of chemical analysis and concrete recommendation

The concrete recommendation has been summarized in this section by referring to BS 8500-1:2006 & BRE
Special Digest 1- 2005, CIRIA C577-2002 and TRANSCO technical specification S-TR-CIVIL-OHL (REV.0-
2018). Based on the sulphate/chloride content at site, practical experience and hostile climatic condition
prevailing in the region, it is more prudent to recommend a Moderate Sulphate Resisting Cement (MSRC) as per
ASTM C 150, Type II or Combination of MSRC + 60% GGBS for foundation concrete works to achieve durability.
The total cementitious content shall be limited within the range of 350 to 400 kg/m3 and water cement ratio shall
be in the range of 0.36 to 0.45 conforming to the TRANSCO technical specification. As an additional protective
measure for the concrete against corrosion, the pile caps shall be totally applied with 2 coats of 2-pack coal tar
epoxy paint of 125m as mentioned in the TRANSCO specification S-TR-CORR (Rev.0-2018).

12.0 CONSTRUCTION SUPERVISION

An experienced engineer or supervisor should be present on the site to oversee all earthworks and foundation
construction activities. In particular, it is recommended that all foundation excavations are inspected by a suitably
qualified engineer, prior to foundation construction, to ensure that the contact surface is properly prepared, and
that exposed sub-surface conditions are consistent with design assumptions.

13.0 REPORT LIMITATIONS
Subsurface conditions have been observed and interpreted at the borehole location only. This information has
been used as the basis for our analyses and the recommendations that follow. Although we have allowed for
minor variations in subsurface conditions in the development of our recommendations, conditions can vary away
from exploration locations. Should this become evident during construction, we should be contacted to review
our recommendations and revise them if necessary. The recommendations presented in this report are
considered preliminary, however the results and site conditions revealed by this investigation may be used and
interpret the findings differently and adopt an alternate engineering judgment by the design engineer.
