1 Introduction

The purpose of this method statement is to provide a step-by-step methodology for road construction.

2 Applicable Specifications and Standards

2.1 SPECIFICATION: SRUCTURAL CONCRETE WORKS

 OHS ACTS
 Project Specifications
 SANS 1200

3 Scope

Road Construction.

4 Safety

4.1 All personnel will be equipped with task specific PPE and the supervisor will enforce the
requirements.
 Work suit (Overall)
 Steel capped boots at all times
 Gloves (Type will be in accordance to task)
 Hearing protection when required
Dust mask when required
Gloves when required
4.2 All operators will apply pre-operational requirements before they enter the area of works:
 Apply the Stop, Look, Assess, Manage (SLAM) Risk Management process before
operating equipment.
 Ensure good housekeeping in work area before use.
 Inspect site before operations commence to ensure no obstacles are on site.

4.3Each day a section/area of construction work will be identified and this specific area will be
indicated to the task specific operators. The supervisor will examine the area to ensure that
there are no obstacles within the area. If an obstacle is found, this will be pointed out to the
operators/employees whom will be working in the area.
4.4The supervisor/safety officer will ensure that the personnel have the correct training and that
they are competent and experienced to operate the equipment used to execute the
construction work on site. Each operator will conduct their own pre-use inspection sheet for
their vehicles/Equipment.
4.5 All plant will be checked before any work commences.
4.6Weekly toolbox talks and daily DSTI will be held with all employees of the Contractor to ensure all
safety hazards are indicated and that everyone understands what is expected from them.
4.7Traffic accommodation will be conducted in accordance to approved traffic drawings and
specifications

5 Environmental

5.1 Waste disposal will be treated as per approved Environmental Management Plan

6 Methodology

6.1 Setting-out
6.1.1 Setting out will be conducted by Readira Nweti JV land surveyor in accordance to the approved
construction drawings, given level and co-ordinates
6.2 Earthworks
6.2.1 Clear and grab all unwanted vegetation’s and trees (In case of nature and heritage reserved
species permission form Resident Engineer will be attained together with removal or relocation
plan)
6.2.2 Care should be taken at all times to avoid damages to existing services (Where possible cross-
cut around existing services will be conducted to enable easy identification during excavations)
6.2.3 With use of TLB, Bob-cat or min-excavator will excavate to required level in accordance to
construction drawing
6.2.4 In process of excavation rip the layer below bottom level of G5 as specified by the Engineer

6.2.5 With use of sit-on smooth drum roller compact ripped layer to Density of 93% MOD AASHTO
and where roller cannot access use of rammer should be adapted to attain specified compaction of
93% MOD AASHTO
6.2.6 Conduct nuclear density test to establish if the compaction conducted meets required
specification/standard
6.2.7 On top of ripped and re-compacted layer of G9 (In-situ material) place and compact G5
commercial material to Density of 95% MOD AASHTO with use of sit-on roller and rammers where
roller cannot be used
6.2.8 Conduct nuclear density test to establish and ensure that compacted layer meets required
specification/standard
6.2.9 Excavation and layers must be done in accordance to the engineer specifications
6.3 Surfacing

Preparation:
 Spray the prepared areas with bitumen prime or emulsion in accordance to specified application
rate.
 Place G5 crusher material layer of 150mm prior laying of hot asphalt
 The camber of the extended section must have the same % with the existing one
 Overlay Area is to be Swept and Cleaned.
 Tack coat consisting of 30% Stable grade emulsion to be applied at a rate of 0.55 ℓ / m² to cleaned
surface using a calibrated bitumen distributor.
 Pre-marked lines as per permanent road marking design to be set out, to indicate where asphalt
overlay longitudinal joints should be.

Placing asphalt overlay:

 The temperature of the asphalt on each truck will be checked and recorded as it arrives on site.
 The temperature of the mix will be checked and recorded before it is applied
 The Foreman will record the position of each load as it is applied. The physical length and width of
each load applied will also be recorded and the spread rate (m3/ton) will be calculated and recorded
for each load. This will enable the site clerk to calculate the thickness of each load applied. The
calculated thickness will be used to cross-check the level sensors to maintain the required overlay
thickness

Compacting
 No Diesel will be used on the wheels of rollers in order to prevent picking up the asphalt material
and only water or Bituglide™ will be used.
 No walking on the uncompacted hot asphalt
 Once the Troxler results show that the compaction requirements have been met rolling will cease.
 No rollers will be allowed to stand on the asphalt layer if the matt temperature is above 60 oC.

 Rollers will roll in the following sequence as many times as necessary:

 After longitudinal joints and edges have been compacted, rolling shall start longitudinally at the
sides and gradually progress to the centre of the join, overlapping the preceding track with at
least ¼ of its width.
The drive wheels of the rollers will always be nearest to the road kerb

Joints:
 Before a new section is applied, all existing tie-in joints will be swept and cleaned of any dust or
foreign matter...
 The joint between existing road and the new hot asphalt must spray with bitumen so that they can
bond together
 Longitudinal joints will be formed by raking the asphalt to the required line and level. Care will be
taken not to rake excessive oversize material into the asphalt matt.
 Excess material will be disposed of and no asphalt will be re-used.
The condition of the screed augers will be checked daily to prevent segregation of the asphalt on the
joints.
Finishing:
Conduct kerb painting and road markings in accordance to approved construction drawings
and project specification
Conduct landscaping in accordance to approved landscaping drawings and project specification
