Discussion

The type of feed provided to chickens plays a crucial role in their growth and development.
According to Agricultural Science for CSEC Examinations, the feed “significantly influences the
weight gain and overall health of the chickens”. In this experiment, two different types of feed
were used: starter feed and grower feed. According to Agricultural Science for CSEC
Examinations, “Starter feed is specifically formulated to meet the nutritional requirements of
young chicks, supporting their initial growth”, Grower feed, on the other hand, “contains higher
protein levels and is suitable for the growth of older chickens”. During the experiment the older
chickens were given Grower feed they stated on grower feed on the third week, but the feed did
not have much effect due to the fact that the chickens weren’t familiar with the feed so they had
to adapt to the feed. On the Other hand, the chicken who continue with starter seem to had seem
to have a steady weight.
The hypothesis was that transitioning from starter feed to grower feed would promote continued
growth and development in the chickens over the 7-week period. When the chickens were
transition over there were little growth and development compare to the starter feed chickens.
According to Agricultural Science for CSEC Examinations, “Brooding is a critical practice in
chicken farming, particularly during the early stages of chick rearing, It provides a controlled
environment with optimal temperature, ventilation, and access to clean water and feed, ensuring
the well-being and early growth of chicks”. In this experiment, a brooder house was utilized as a
controlled environment for the initial three weeks, providing the necessary care and facilitating
the growth of the chicks.
After the slaughter process, the chickens were plucked to remove their feathers. According to the
Agricultural Science for CSEC Examinations “Hot water was used to loosen the feathers, making
the plucking process more efficient. Removing the gallbladder from the chicken's liver was a
common practice to prevent the bile from affecting the taste and quality of the meat. Agricultural
Science for CSEC Examinations also mentions “the use of wood shavings as bedding material in
poultry pens, which helps maintain hygiene, absorb moisture, and provide a comfortable
environment for the chickens. “As for the experiment wood shaving was used because it was
easy available and a cheaper way to maintain hygiene and also a comfortable environment for
the chickens.
