-Boarding schools were common
-Segregated schools were common (boys’ and girls’
schools)
-Education system was directed at forming soldiers
Culture
-Recreational drugs were pertinent
-Society was changing from a conservative type to a liberal
‘permissive society’
-Mass-media, the idea of television was popularized
-Religion became less popular and being peaceful (Hippie)
became more popular

War
-Britain was still recovering from the war
-Multiple major cities were bomb sites and ruins
-Many of the people were poor because of the war
William Golding
-Attended the Marlborough Grammar School which was a
boys only school
-Joined the Royal Navy in 1940
-Experienced many gruesome sights during his service
Novel
-Idea for the novel came about after Golding read an
unrealistic depiction of stranded children in youth novels
-Book was published in 1954, which aligns with the setting
of the novel since characters talk about atomic bombs
