Dear Students:

We are excited to invite you to our inaugural STEAM Olympiad; EMSTEM 1.0 taking place
on March 18th & 19th 2023.

The Olympiad is a collec on of 4 high-voltage, engaging team challenges that will run
through mul ple rounds covering the interests of mul -genre science trivia, circuitry &
programming basics, engineering design and cryptography, and also forensic science. The
very brief synopsis for each of the categories is shared below, while detailed rule books and
judging rubrics will be shared once teams register.

We recommend that the teams are a combina on of IGCSE and A-levels or SSC and FSC
students. We welcome teams to sign up in mul ple challenges as we’ve scheduled them
without clashes. Up to 03 teams per school invited!

Please note the registra on details for the challenges:

1: Early Bird Discount valid un l March 08th

* You may register for 02 challenges in this combo: Scinapse Surge with Techathlon OR
Secure Structures and Sherlock Showdown with Techathlon OR Secure Structures

1: Scinapse Surge: Science Trivia | Team Size: 4

Across 3 rounds, students will be tested on their overall science knowledge. The trivia
ques ons are a combina on of concepts covered in IGCSE, SSC, A-levels, and FSc Science
subjects, as well as basic general knowledge like that of astronomy, earth sciences, and IT.

The rst round is based on the format of the Science Bowl- with buzzers, toss up ques ons
and possibili es for Bonus points as well. Top 6 teams will move to the next round based
on points scored.

The second round will be a wri en task that will tests the team members’ analy cal skills
to deduce and solve a more in-depth challenge

The nal round is an exci ng trivia game played out on a human-size game board between
the Top 4 teams from Round 2.

Round 1 will provide data sheets and a circuit schema c to decipher and complete while
racing against me. Only fundamental circuitry knowledge is a prerequisite; you’ll have the
resources to build on it provided to you.

So, you can handle the hardware, but can you scale the mountain of so ware? The second
round of this category will challenge par cipants’ problem-solving abili es under the
pump, along with their applica on in the text editor. Various byte-sized coding challenges
will be presented to be solved aesthe cally and e ciently using standard programming
languages and techniques.

U lising the hardware and so ware skills that helped teams progress through the previous
rounds, the top 4 will engage in an Arduino-based ba le. Numerous examples of possible
kits and projects will be revealed beforehand for guidance. The real project, to be
constructed and programmed within a me limit, will be revealed on the spot and will be
iden cal for all par cipants.

3: Secure Structures: Engineering stronger, safer buildings | Team Size: 2-3

How do we design structures that are stronger and safer? The 1st Round of this category
will have teams compe ng to build something, with stated condi ons that will be shared
on the day. This structure will then be put under 2 tests of stability- earthquakes and
weight impact. The top 4 structures that survive will move ahead to the next round.

The next round will be a challenge of making this building secure with the use of ciphers.
Teams will have access to resources needed to work through mul ple ciphers and by
working against each other the winner will come out as the team that was able to secure
the maximum number of rooms of their building.

4: Sherlock Showdown: True Crime Inves ga ng | Team Size: 3-4

In this category, teams will rst solve a cold case based on evidence provided in a le. All
resources will be restricted to this le alone and the teams will si through the data to
iden fy the criminals.

Teams able to correctly solve the mysteries will move on to the Final Round. Here, they will
be stuck in a custom-built Escape Room that they have to solve. Murder, intrigue, twists
and turns we have a classic case of a whodunnit!
