Solve the following problem.

1. James is returning from a successful fishing trip pulls a sled


loaded with St. Peter’s Fish18 (Tilapia). The total mass of the
sled and salmon is 50.0 kg, and he exerts a force of 1.2 x 10 2
N on the sled by pulling on the rope. (a) How much work
does he do on the sled if the rope is horizontal to the ground
(θ = 0o in figure) and he pulls the sled 5 m? (b) How much
work does he do on the sled if θ = 30o and he pulls the sled the same distance?
2. Suppose that in Problem 1 the coefficient of kinetic friction between the loaded 50.0-kg
sled and snow is 0.2. (a) James pulls again the sled 5 m, exerting a force of 1.2 x 10 2 N at
an angle of 0o. Find the work done on the sled by friction, and the network. (b) Repeat
the calculation if the applied force is exerted at an angle of 30.0 o
with the horizontal.
3. Sheila Marie Perez is competing for Diving Competition, her mass m
drops from a board 10 m above the water’s surface, as in figure.
Neglect air resistance. (a) Use conservation of mechanical energy to
find her speed 5 m above the water’s surface. (b) Find her speed as
she hits the water.

resistance. (a) At what minimum distance should the brakes be applied to avoid a
collision with the other car? (b) If the distance between the vehicles is initially only 30.0
m, at what speed would the collision occur?
5. Jhia (60 kg) is a skiing at the top of a slope, as shown in figure. At
the initial point A, she is 10 m vertically above point B. (a) Setting
the zero level for gravitational potential energy at point B, find the
gravitational potential energy of this system when the skier is at
point A and then at point B. Finally, find the change in potential
energy of the skier-Earth system as the Jhia goes from point A to
point B. (b) Repeat this problem with the zero level at point A. (c)
Repeat again, with the zero level 2.0 m higher than point B.
6. A horse is towing a canal boat, the tow rope making an angle of 10o with the towpath. If the
tension in the rope is 20 N, how many joules of work are done while moving 50 m along the
towpath?
7. Natz is pushing a block 2 m along a fixed horizontal surface by a horizontal force of 2 N. The
opposing force of friction is 0.4 N. (a) How much work is done by the 2 N force? (b) What is the
