Researchers discover giant tree species in the Atlantic Forest October 24, 2022 The only species
of giant tree of the genus Dipteryx in the Atlantic Forest was discovered in the municipality of
Branquinha, in Alagoas, by researchers from the Botanical Garden of Rio de Janeiro, Federal
University of Bahia (UFBA) and State University of Feira de Santana (UEFS). The discovery is part
of the doctoral thesis of researcher Catarina Silva de Carvalho, who graduated from the National
School of Tropical Botany at the Botanical Garden, and was co-authored by researchers Haroldo
Cavalcante de Lima, Domingos Cardoso, Débora Zuanny and Bernarda S. Gregório.

The species, which can reach up to 30 meters in height, was described in an article published
on the 9th in the scientific journal Botanical Journal of the Linnean Society. The researchers
found only one adult individual and two juveniles in a preserved forest fragment inside a farm
and surrounded by sugarcane plantations.

“Most of the species are from the Amazon, but through the herbal consultation, we saw that
there was this material from the Atlantic Forest, which was very different. But we couldn't
describe the species because the materials were very old and few. Also, when we went to the
areas mentioned in the herbaria, the forests had been cut down. They had already been
decimated”, explained Catarina Carvalho to Agência Brasil. The researchers' initial conclusion
was that the trees had become extinct. Species During her doctorate, however, Catarina was
contacted by the National Forestry Inventory reporting that they had this tree and that they did
not know how to identify it.

“As soon as I laid eyes on this cactus, I saw that it was the species I thought was extinct. It was
from Branquinha (AL)”. The researchers ended up going into the field and were able to collect
the species, which was fundamental for them to be able to describe it. With a light colored trunk,
which stands out in the forest, the species was cataloged as Dipteryx hermetopascoaliana, in
homage to composer and multi-instrumentalist from Alagoas, Hermeto Pascoal. For Catarina
Carvalho, like the tree, Hermeto Pascoal is a giant of northeastern music and instrumental jazz
and stands out in the Brazilian music scene. “We thought it suited Hermeto a lot, this musician of
ours, from the Northeast, a giant of multi-instrumentalist jazz”. For researchers, just as Hermeto is
a symbol of resistance to the diversity of Brazilian culture within the jazz universe, constituting a
world reference, the giant tree Dipteryx hermetopascoaliana cataloged now is a symbol of
resistance to the mega diversity of the Atlantic Forest.

Dipteryx hermetopascoaliana is a much taller tree than the rest of the trees in the forest. Catarina
hopes that, as soon as they become aware of the discovery, the owners of the farm will be
interested in conserving the new species of giant tree. The genus Dipteryx belongs to the
leguminous family and is common in the Amazon, with species such as tonka bean (D. odorata),
and also in the Cerrado, with baru (D. alata). Dipteryx hermetopascoaliana, however, is the first
species of the genus described in the Atlantic Forest, the most devastated biome in Brazil and,
currently, with only about 10% of its original coverage. Therefore, researchers believe that the
giant tree is already highly threatened by the historic destruction of its habitat. Currently,
Catarina Carvalho is a postdoctoral fellow at the National Institute for Research in the Amazon
(Inpa), in Manaus, where she will remain until 2025 doing research on trees, giants or not.

A única espécie de árvore gigante do gênero Dipteryx na Mata Atlântica foi descoberta no
município de Branquinha, em Alagoas, por pesquisadores do Jardim Botânico do Rio de Janeiro,
Universidade Federal da Bahia (UFBA) e Universidade Estadual de Feira de Santana (UEFS). A
descoberta integra a tese de doutorado da pesquisadora Catarina Silva de Carvalho, egressa da
Escola Nacional de Botânica Tropical do Jardim Botânico, e teve como coautores os
pesquisadores Haroldo Cavalcante de Lima, Domingos Cardoso, Débora Zuanny e Bernarda S.

A espécie, que pode alcançar até 30 metros de altura, foi descrita em artigo publicado, no dia 9,
na revista científica Botanical Journal of the Linnean Society. Os pesquisadores encontraram
apenas um indivíduo adulto e dois jovens em um fragmento de floresta preservada dentro de
uma fazenda e cercado de lavouras de cana-de-açúcar.

“A maioria das espécies é amazônica, mas através da consulta herbária, a gente viu que tinha
esse material da Mata Atlântica, que era muito diferente. Só que a gente não conseguia
descrever a espécie porque os materiais eram muito antigos e poucos. Também, quando a
gente ia nas áreas citadas nos herbários, as matas tinham sido derrubadas. Já haviam sido
dizimadas”, explicou Catarina Carvalho - à Agência Brasil.

A conclusão inicial dos pesquisadores era que as árvores haviam sido extintas.
Espécie
Durante o doutorado, contudo, Catarina foi contatada pelo Inventário Florestal Nacional
relatando que estavam com essa árvore e que não sabiam como identificar. “Na hora em que
coloquei os olhos nesse cato, vi que se tratava da espécie que eu achava que estava extinta. Era
lá de Branquinha (AL)”. Os pesquisadores acabaram indo em campo e conseguiram coletar a
espécie, o que foi fundamental para que pudessem descrevê-la.

Com o tronco de cor clara, que se destaca na floresta, a espécie foi catalogada como Dipteryx
hermetopascoaliana, em homenagem ao compositor e multi-instrumentista alagoano Hermeto
Pascoal. Para Catarina Carvalho, tal como a árvore, Hermeto Pascoal é um gigante da música
nordestina e do jazz instrumental e se destaca no cenário musical brasileiro.

“A gente achou que combinava muito com Hermeto, esse músico nosso, nordestino, gigante do
jazz multi-instrumentalista”. Para os pesquisadores, assim como Hermeto é símbolo de
resistência da diversidade da cultura brasileira dentro do universo do jazz, constituindo
referência mundial, a árvore gigante Dipteryx hermetopascoaliana catalogada agora é símbolo
de resistência da mega diversidade da Mata Atlântica.

A Dipteryx hermetopascoaliana é uma árvore bem mais alta do que o restante das árvores da
floresta. Catarina espera que, assim que tomarem conhecimento da descoberta, os
proprietários da fazenda possam se interessar em conservar a nova espécie de árvore gigante.

O gênero Dipteryx pertence à família das leguminosas e é comum na Amazônia, com espécies
como o cumaru (D. odorata), e também no Cerrado, com o baru (D. alata). A Dipteryx
hermetopascoaliana, entretanto, é a primeira espécie do gênero descrita na Mata Atlântica,
bioma mais devastado do Brasil e, atualmente, com cerca de apenas 10% de sua cobertura
original. Por isso, os pesquisadores acreditam que a árvore gigante já está altamente ameaçada
pela destruição histórica de seu habitat.
Atualmente, Catarina Carvalho é bolsista de pós-doutorado no Instituto Nacional de Pesquisas
da Amazônia (Inpa), em Manaus, onde permanecerá até 2025 fazendo pesquisas sobre árvores,
gigantes ou não. “Sempre desvendando um pouco mais da biodiversidade”, disse Catarina.
