4. WORK METHODOLOGY / EXECUTION

4.1 GA Batter Boards and Benchmarks

4.1.1 Review property zoning and setback restrictions to be sure that your
structure is within property lines and meets required setbacks.
4.1.2 Build the batter boards — the batter boards must all be at the same height
for the string line to be level. To check the height, you can use the following
tools: water level (level hose), spirit level or laser level.
4.1.3 Once the height of the batter boards is set, decide which wall will be your
reference wall. Attach the string for the reference wall first, placing it
exactly where you want the wall to be. To do this put a nail in the top of
each batter board and tie the string to it. Do the same procedure respectively.
4.1.4 Start double checking the height of the batter boards.
4.1.5 Set corner column/post holes according to the string lines.

4.2 Excavation
4.2.1 The first and primary step involved in the excavation is to find out the
extent of soil and clearing of construction site of unwanted bushes, weeds, and
plants.
4.2.2 Setting out or ground tracing is the process of laying down the excavation
lines and center lines etc. on the ground before the excavation is started.
4.2.3 Maximum of 4 and minimum of 2 benchmarks are marked in the corner
for the measurement of level. These benchmarks are marked on permanent
structures like, plinth, road, or tree.
4.2.4 The tracing is marked by lime powder.
4.2.5 With the reference of drawing and benchmarks the depth of the excavation
is fixed.
4.2.6 Excavation is done by manual using shovel and Digging Bar.
4.2.7 The excavated soil is to either removed out the site or stocked around the
excavation pit. 0Minimum of 1 in distance must be maintained between the
stocking of excess soil and pit, so that due to rain or other forces the soil
should not sweep into the pits.
4.2.8 Dressing of excavated pits is to be done as specified in the drawings.
4.2.9 Dewatering of excavated area is to provide if needed.
4.2.10 All the sides of the building must be sealed for the safety propose.

4.3 Gravel Bedding

4.3.1 Once all sides of excavation are properly completed, spread a 50mm thick of
¾ inch gravel on the excavated zone.

4.4 Shuttering and Deshuttering Of Form Works

4.4.1 Fabrication of Formworks. The sheeting of footing and column formworks
is prefabricated according to the footing and column dimensions also
considering 0.10 meters for the lapping of form joints from sheeting
boards.
4.4.2 After determining the measurements needed, cut the sheeting boards with a
circular saw following the mark produced using chalk line.
4.4.3 During fabrication of formwork shutters, all dimensions shall be cross-
checked with a view to avoiding corrective action during erection.

4.5 Fabrication of Footing and Pedestal Reinforcement Steel Bar

4.5.1 Cutting of Reinforcing Steel Bar
4.5.1.1 Measuring the Job
Rebar is typically sold in lengths of about 20 feet, so it is important
to take accurate measurements if you need to bend the rebar in any direction
as well. Use the tape measure to measure each of the cuts and mark the
rebar with a piece of chalk to know where to begin the cut.

4.5.1.2 Making the Cut

4.5.1.2.1 When working with rebar, keep in mind that you are cutting a metal
surface with a metal blade. It’s going to generate sparks, and metal
shavings will be flying through the air. For these reasons, you’ll want to
exercise caution.
4.5.1.2.2 Make sure to wear proper safety equipment like googles and gloves.
You also should be wearing pants, long sleeves and work boots for this job
if possible.
4.5.1.2.3 Using a circular saw, load the rebar onto the saw and position it so
that the mark you made for your cut is right under the saw’s blade. Next,
turn the saw on and make the cut. Let the saw do the work, and don’t apply
any excessive downward pressure during the cut. Allow the blade to stop
fully before removing the cut rebar from the workspace.

4.5.2 Manual Bending Of Footing and Column Rebar

To bend rebar in this method, you would need a lengthy wood set up in a
standing position that will serve as the bender table and four (4) small rebars
fixed on the wood. Mark the point on the rebar where you want the bend to

appear. Insert rebar into the bars fixed on the table. Insert the pipe on the rebar.
Hold the pipe and bend it at the point where you want the bending to appear.

4.5.3 Fabrication of Stirrups/Ties

Presently the stirrup is made up of the manually operation using a 10mm
diameter bar. The operator uses the bender table to perform the bending operation;
the bender table contains four (4) small rebars alternately drilled on the bender
table. The rebar is horizontally passed through the bars fixed on the table up to the
calk marks and the operator bends it into 90 degrees. Its operation performs three
(3) times to get the desired stirrup in 90 degrees. The chalk marks are made up for
the purpose of size of the stirrup

4.5.4 Fabrication of Wire

When placing reinforced steel or rebar, tie is used to hold the rebar in place
during concrete pour. Measure and cut at least 0.3 meters length of #16 G.I Wire. A
plier or a metal hooking tool can help to bend, pull, and twist the tie wire.

4.6 Erection/Installation of Formworks

4.6.1 Verify lines, levels, and measurement before proceeding with formwork.
4.6.2 Hand trim sides and bottom of earth forms, remove loose dirt.
4.6.3 Align form joints.
4.6.4 Formworks shall be braced and supported using 2’x2’x8” good lumber
connected to sheeting board to carry the concrete load and other loads
foreseen prior to and during concreting.

4.7 Installation of Footing and Pedestal Reinforcement

4.7.1 Before placing the fabricated footing, check the excavated soil if it reached
the required level of depth.
4.7.2 Place the fabricated footing in its designated location. Place 75mm
concrete spacer under the fabricated footing, so the rebar will not be
touching the soil. Make sure that the excavated soil is bigger than the
fabricated footing.
4.7.3 Place the pedestal guide into the footing. Make sure that the distance of the
pedestal guide is checked according to the plan layout.
4.7.4 Put the pedestal reinforcement. Use plum bob to get the right perpendicular
of the pedestal from the footing.

4.8 Pouring Of Concrete

4.8.1 Before pouring the concrete, the formwork is to be cleaned and checked
again for proper execution.

4.8.2 After cleaning, the cleaning holes of column formworks are to be tightly
closed since the maximum pressure of the concrete mix is occurring at the
foot of the formwork where the cleaning holes are always to be put against
the thrust-board and against framework bearers. If necessary, additional
formwork is to be thoroughly wetted with water because thereby less water
will be extracted from the concrete mix and later stripping will be
facilitated. When placing the concrete, it is to be made sure that no changes
take place with the formwork.
4.8.3 The design mix and materials for the grade of concrete specified will be
prepared by the ready-mix concrete supplier’s laboratory and will be
approved by clients.
